3 Page 3 3. SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID CONT. URGENT: New RA Level III University Policy From the desk of Michael Sedlak Dear College of Education PhD students: There is a new University policy regarding qualification for Level III Research (RA) and Teaching Exempt (TE) Graduate Assistantships. If you have not passed your comprehensive examinations, carefully read this message, because the timing of your comps' completion will affect your eligibility for different pay levels. There is a stipend differential between appointment levels II and III. At this time there is a 5% salary differential between level II and III assistantships in the College of Education. The change in the university requirements is effective spring, Details about the new requirements are found in the Academic Programs Catalog on line: The new requirements for level III for RA and TE appointments include: (1) Six semesters of experience as a graduate research or teaching assistant at MSU, or equivalent as determined by the appointing unit chairperson or director. (Previously four semesters of experience were required.) (2) Successful completion of doctoral comprehensive exams, as defined by the department in which the student is enrolled. (New requirement.) Although the new University policy went into effect this semester, the College of Education is providing a transition for RA and TE appointments as follows: for spring and summer 2007 only, students who previously held a level III appointment, but do not meet the new guidelines, will be changed to level II. However, the stipend will not be reduced. This policy will be in full effect for level III RA and TE appointments in the College of Education effective fall, Students who have less than 6 semesters of experience or have not completed comprehensive examinations prior to the starting date of the appointment period will be appointed at level II with the stipend set at level II rates. Your departments and research employers have been notified of this change, and the Dean's Office is working with them to assure a smooth transition. Watch for possible updates and clarifications to this policy. Teaching assistantships falling under the GEU contract are governed separately by that contract. 4. 9 Page 9 The Graduate School is conducting a survey of currently enrolled graduate students to solicit your opinion about your experiences of your graduate program at Michigan State University. Information from the survey will be used to improve graduate programs and the graduate school experience for students. The survey consists of questions about your experiences of your department/ program, your overall graduate training, and your experiences as a research/ teaching assistant. The survey takes about minutes to complete. Participation in this survey is completely voluntary and your responses will be kept completely confidential. The survey is available online at the following website: K-12 EAD Faculty David Arsen Ph: arsen@msu.edu URL: Maenette Benham (on sabbatical ) Ph: mbenham@msu.edu URL: Philip Cusick Ph: pacusick@msu.edu Christopher Dunbar Ph: dunbarc@msu.edu URL: Melinda Mangin Ph: mmangin@msu.edu URL: David Plank Ph: dnplank@msu.edu Susan Printy Ph: sprinty@msu.edu BetsAnn Smith Ph: bas@msu.edu Gary Sykes Ph: garys@msu.edu Conference Support for EAD Students The Department of Educational Administration wants to encourage students to present papers at scholarly and professional conferences. Thus, students who have had papers accepted at conferences, or who have been nominated and selected for special Graduate Student Seminars which some of the associations hold, are eligible to apply for financial support for travel and conference related expenses. In most cases, doctoral students presenting papers will receive up to $250. Master s students are eligible for support up to $100. Exact amount of support will depend on the level of expenses associated with a particular conference (e.g., distance to travel, length, etc.). Also, please note that a student should expect to receive only one allocation of $250 per year. The Graduate School also provides some support for students to present at conferences, as does the Council of Graduate Students (COGS), so you should look into those possibilities also. However, those applications require that you first apply to the department. To apply for department support, you should complete a specific form that was sent to you in September. If you need the form again, please contact Melissa Usiak usiakmel@msu.edu.
