7 Mock Exams (November 7 th - 18 th ) The estimated grade for application to post-16 is partly based on the mock exam result. Teachers use the mock exam result to inform planning and next steps. 8 New GCSE Grades 9-1 and Changes to Reporting

9 How have GCSE s changed? The government are bringing in new GCSE s and a new GCSE grading system. They will be graded 9-1, where 9 represents the highest grade and 1 the lowest. There is not a one-to-one correspondence between 9-1 and A*-G, as there are only 8 different grades under the current grading system. The government have given advice on key grades that should be comparable. The new GCSE s are being rolled in over the next 2 years. Your child will only sit the new style GCSE in English and Maths and will therefore be graded 9-1 for those subjects but A*-G for all other GCSE s.

10 New GCSE grades 9-1 Grades 9-1 and the new GCSE will be phased in with first teaching beginning for Maths and English in September 2015 and most other subjects in September 2016.

11 New GCSE grades 9-1 Broadly the same proportion of pupils will achieve a grade 4 and above as currently achieve a grade C and above. Broadly the same proportion of pupils will achieve a grade 7 and above as achieve an A and above. The bottom of grade 1 will be aligned with the bottom of grade G. The top 20% of pupils currently achieving an A and above will achieve a grade 9. This means that 9 is roughly the same as the top 40% of those pupils who used to achieve an A*. The government are planning to make the new benchmark grade a 5. It is unclear how Post-16 centres will respond to this at this point.

12 Minimum Grade This is the grade that your child is aiming to meet or exceed by the end of Key Stage 4. The Minimum Grade gives an indication of how your child should progress compared with similar pupils in high performing schools like Sawston Village College.

13 Estimated Grade This is the level that the teacher believes your child will achieve by the end of Key Stage 4 based on their current performance and assessments.

15 ATTENDANCE AND ATTAINMENT What was your child s attendance last year? Do you know your child s attendance this year? Year 11 current attendance is at 95%

16 What is the impact of 90% attendance? 90% attendance = ½ day missed every week!! 90% over 5 years = 20 weeks Or HALF A YEAR MISSED Mon Tue Wed Thur Fri? Absent half a day every week

17 Impact of absence Research suggests absence of 17 or more days in a year can impact on GCSE grades Pupils can drop by 1 GCSE grade+ DfE change in legal action Pupils whose attendance is below 90% are persistent absentees If absence is unauthorised, legal action is to be expected

18 Target 95%+ Know your child s attendance rate and keep this monitored Ensure, if there has been absence, that work missed has been caught up Use Show my Homework to catch up with missed homework Avoid medical/dental appointments during the school day unless absolutely necessary Assess reason for absence and know the impact No term time holiday. This will not be authorised and could incur legal action

25 School or College course How to apply for: Within CAP, use UCAS Progress. Pupils can also apply for some Apprenticeships using UCAS. For centres outside the CAP area, approach the centre directly. Apprenticeship / Traineeship/Jobs with Training 1. Search and apply for Apprenticeships online using 2. Contact colleges and training providers that offer Apprenticeships. 3. Approach employers to see if they offer or would be willing to offer an Apprenticeship. 4. For jobs with training, use and apply directly to employers. CAP offers more support with this
