2 Course Description: A course designed to prepare individuals for emergency situations. The individual will learn how to care for victims of sudden illness or injury, etiology of accidents, current safety concerns and practices, basic first aid and CPR competencies. CPR certification is not offered in the online class. To obtain certification you will need to complete an American Red Cross course. ARC offers a variety of face-to-face and online courses, view their website for the current class schedule. Course Objectives: This course will prepare you for emergency situations; you will know what first aid steps you should take to handle the emergency. To participate in online courses, students will need access to a computer and the internet

4 2. To access the class, go to the home page and click the Student Logins link to access WebCT. You will not be able to use the WebCT reset/find password link since you do not have a Lee College student ID #. Lee College will assign a username and password for you during the first week of class. The IT department will send me a list of the username and passwords for the VCT students. I will you once I have this information. If you do not receive this from me by the second day of class, please contact me at fthomas@lee.edu so I can verify the address I have on record for you. 3. Students will be responsible for checking the WebCT announcements, calendar, and s on a regular basis. 4. Exams will be short answers. To complete the short answer questions you will need to use Internet Explorer versus a program like Moxilla or Firefox. All exams have submission deadlines and time constraints. A 10 point deduction will be accessed for missing the deadline. Exams are not proctored. 5. Quizzes will be a combination of multiple choices and true/false questions. You will have 2 hours to complete each chapter quiz. All quizzes will have submission deadlines. A 5 point deduction will be accessed for missing the deadline. 6. If you miss an exam or quiz deadline you will have the opportunity during the last week of class resubmit Notice of new legislation affecting drops: Students who entered any Texas public college or university during or after Fall 2007, as first time college students, are subject to a Texas law (SB 1231) which limits the number of drops students are allowed in certain circumstances at all state funded Texas institutions of higher education. The law affects only drops (defined as the dropping of one or more courses during a semester, but not all classes during a semester). Resignation (dropping of all courses in a semester, at the same time) is not restricted. The law limits students to six unexcused drops. After six unexcused drops, the student will not be allowed to drop any course after the census date of a semester. The student

5 would be required to receive a grade that will affect the student s GPA. Dropping of developmental courses will not count in the unexcused drop total. Courses dropped during dual enrollment prior to high school graduation are not counted in the unexcused drop total. The law requires that Lee College show a student s unexcused drops on the official transcript. All public institutions of higher education in Texas are required to consider the drops reported from other affected institutions toward the allowable total. The law is intended to encourage students to use state-supported educational resources efficiently. However, the law recognizes several understandable situations which might cause a student to drop a course; these drops will be considered excused. Those reasons include: Severe illness of the student Student responsibility for care of a sick, injured or needy person Death of a family member or someone with whom the student has a close relationship Active duty in the military of the student, a student s family member, or a person with whom the student has a close relationship Change in student s work schedule which is beyond student s control Documentation of any of these reasons may be required. In addition, the law allows the college to determine other good cause for dropping a class. This will include most drops from Fall 2007 Summer 2008 at Lee College (before students were adequately advised of the law by Lee College). In addition, students whose drops are deemed unexcused will have a certain amount of time to appeal that decision. Lee College wants all students to be successful in reaching their college goals. It is the college s intent to reduce the number of drops by helping students make good enrollment choices and by providing support once semesters start. Students concerned about the law are urged to visit with a Lee College counselor or advisor to learn more. Appointments for counseling can be made by calling ; by stopping in at the Counseling Center, Moler Hall; or by ing counselor@lee.edu. Starting in Fall 2008, affected students will be notified of the impact when submitting a drop request for any class after the census date for that class has passed.
