6 COURSE OFFERINGS KEY This key is designed to help clarify the information about Montgomery County Public School requirements in the courses that are offered at Winston Churchill High School. Pre requisite (P); Co requisite (C): MCPS course requirements. In general, the first semester of a course is a prerequisite for second semester. Double Period (DP): Courses that require two periods, instead of the normal single period Triple Period (TP): Courses that require three periods, instead of the normal single period Honors (H) Courses: Provide expectations and opportunities for students to engage in more rigorous and complex content and processes and to develop authentic products that reflect the student s understanding of key concepts. Includes appropriate adaptations for enriched learning for pursuing in depth studies that require abstract and higherorder thinking skills. These courses have the designated H in the beginning of the title. Advanced Level (AL) Courses: Based on previous achievement in sequence of study. Includes appropriate adaptations for enriched learning for pursuing in depth studies that require abstract and higher order thinking skills. These courses have the designated AL in parenthesis next to the course title. Advanced Placement (AP) Courses: Meets College Board guidelines to accompany the Advanced Placements Examinations. A qualifying score on an AP exam may earn the student college credit or advanced standing in the subject in college. These courses have the designated AP in the beginning of the title. Technology Education (TE) Courses: To satisfy MSDE high school graduation requirements, students are required to take a state approved technology courses. MCPS technology education courses that meet this requirement are designated TE in parentheses next to the title. Fine Art (FA) Courses: To satisfy the fine arts requirement selected courses in art, dance, drama/theater, and music will be designated FA Course Descriptions: Full course descriptions can be found on the MCPS Course Bulletin website. 7 Maryland Diploma Requirements NOTE: The graduation requirements referenced in this publication are specific for students with a first year of ninth grade in 09 0 (typically the class of 03). Depending on a student s first year in ninth grade, graduation requirements may vary. For specific information about graduation requirements, contact your school counselor or the Montgomery County Public Schools website. English Fine Arts Health Education Mathematics MCPS GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS AT A GLANCE 4 credits credit Selected courses in art, dance, drama/theatre, and music that satisfy the fine arts requirement are designated FA 0.5 credit 4 credits full year (A/B) algebra credit and geometry credit required. Physical Education Science Social Studies Technology Education (TE) Electives: The additional credits required for graduation may be fulfilled by one of the following three options Student Service Learning (SSL) MCAP credit 3 Next Generation Science (NGSS) credits, including at least life science credit (BC) and physical science credit (PC). 3 credits. Includes U.S. History credit; World History credit; and National, State, and Local (NSL) Government credit credit designated TE. Advanced Technology (AT) courses do not satisfy the TE course requirement. OPTION OPTION OPTION 3 credits in advanced technology education (AT) AND.5 credits in elective courses. Of the three total credits, one credit must be a biology credit, and one credit must be a physical science credit. The school recommends all students take biology, chemistry, and physics. 24 HEALTH COURSE OFFERINGS NOTE: The State of Maryland requires.5 credits of health education for graduation. CORE COURSE SELECTIONS GR SEM CODE PRE REQUISITE/CO REQUISITE H Health Only one semester allowed/required Only one semester allowed/required Health is a one semester 0 th grade course that is required for graduation. It is available during the regular school year. Instead of taking health during the regular school year, some students make a commitment to complete this course through one of the following options during the summer after 9 th, 0 th, or th grade:. MCPS regional summer school. MCPS elearning 3. WCHS summer symposium MCPS and WCHS summer school brochures will be available in the main office, in the counseling office, and online by the end of March. Registration begins in early April. Students are urged to register early for summer courses as a limited number of spaces are available. For more information about Regional Summer School and elearning options, please visit the MCPS website. Information about the WCHS Summer Symposium will also be available in the spring. 33 DUAL ENROLLMENT AT MONTGOMERY COLLEGE Dual Enrollment is available to advanced high school students admitted to Montgomery College (MC). Select students are enrolled in college courses while still attending high school, providing an educational experience beyond what is available at the secondary level. High school juniors and seniors who meet the College's Dual Enrollment (DE) standards may enhance their schedule with college course work and experience the independence of college level study while also earning college credit. Dual Enrollment at MC enables high school students to; register and attend a Montgomery College course(s) on campus, online or at their high school site; engage with outstanding college professors and their peers in a collegiate classroom setting; graduate from high school with earned college credit; potentially save money on college tuition; accelerate college completion; and gain additional skills and confidence needed to succeed in college Students may enroll in a variety of courses at the college, provided they meet the Dual Enrollment standards.
