2 Hello! Welcome to Mrs. Dart s first grade class! I have planned many fun activities this year to help us learn new things, learn how to be organized at school, and also how to be a good friend. In order for us to accomplish all of our goals this year, there are a few really important things we need to do each day. Please take time to read through my classroom procedures with your child. This will help everyone understand the correct classroom procedures that are expected in our classroom. This is a very important part of our classroom management and community building effort in our classroom. If we need to review the procedures for our classroom, we can check back in our handbook to make sure we are following the correct procedure. When a student forgets a procedure, I will ask them to look up the procedure in the handbook and re-read it so that they can practice the procedure correctly. By practicing our procedures each day, and reviewing them, we will keep our classroom running smoothly. I am looking forward to a tremendous year in first grade! 2

4 Morning Routine 1. Greet Mrs. Dart in the hallway. 2. Put your backpack, coat, and lunch in your locker. 3. Put your H.O.R.S.E. Folder into the folder bin. 4. Make a Lunch choice. 5. Sharpen at least 2 pencils. 6. Start morning work. 7. Put morning work away at 9:00 and read a quiet book at your desk until announcements come on. I will set a timer and students must have their morning work put aside before the timer rings, and then begin reading. 8. After announcements, we will check morning work. 4
5 Morning Work Routine 1. Find your Morning Work folder on the Guided Reading table. 2. Complete morning work task that is posted on the SMARTboard. Each day a new morning assignment will be posted for you to complete. 3. Get the supplies that you will need to complete your morning work. (Pencil, crayon, ruler, cubes, etc.) 4. Quietly complete your morning work at your seat. 5. When you finish your morning work, place it on the green dot side of your Morning Work folder. 6. At 9:00, morning work needs to be put into your folder. If you are not finished working, it needs to go onto the red dot side of your Morning Work folder. 7. If you finish your work before 9:00, you should read quietly at your seat. 8. After morning work is put into your folder, set it aside on your desk and read a book quietly at your seat until announcements. After announcements, we will check our morning work. 5
6 H.O.R.S.E. Folders 1. Each first grade student in our classroom will get a H.O.R.S.E folder at the beginning of the school year. 2. You must bring your H.O.R.S.E folder to school with you every day, and take it home with you each night. 3. If you forget your H.O.R.S.E folder 2 nights in a row, you will stay in from recess and write a reminder note for yourself. Your parents will need to sign your note and help you look for your H.O.R.S.E folder at home. 4. If you lose your H.O.R.S.E folder, you will be responsible for replacing it, as it is a vital tool for organization, and home to school communication. 6
7 Pencil Sharpening 1. You will need to sharpen at least 2 pencils in the morning to use during the day in our classroom. 2. If your pencil lead breaks during the day, and you do not have a sharpened pencil, you may borrow one from the sharpened pencil container. 3. You may not sharpen pencils during working times. It is very distracting to others if our pencil sharpener is running while they are trying to learn. 4. You may sharpen a pencil at recess time, if your pencil lead breaks. 5. If there are no sharpened pencils, ask Mrs. Dart for a sharpened one. 7
8 Calendar Routine 1. Each day our class will meet at the carpet to review our calendar and discuss upcoming events in our classroom. 2. It is extremely important that we each participate in our calendar time each day. Everyone is expected to follow the rules for our calendar time. 3. We greet our friends when we come to the carpet. 4. We must sit on the colored squares at the carpet. We should fill in the front squares first and then make rows behind the rows that are full. Mrs. Dart reserves the right to make assigned seating at the carpet if students are unable to sit appropriately on their own. 5. We will listen to each other. This means that we will not talk while Mrs. Dart or classmates are talking. 6. We will each participate in our calendar time. This means that we will take turns sharing questions and answers with each other. Everyone is expected to help during calendar time and contribute to our classroom discussion. 7. We are all friends and will take care of each other s feelings. This means that we will give each other compliments and suggestions. 8
9 Restroom and Drinks 1. Students should use the restroom and get drinks in the morning when they arrive in the classroom. 2. Our classroom will have at least 2 designated restroom break times in our schedule. Everyone will have the opportunity to use the restroom and get drinks during this time. 3. You do not have to ask to use the restroom during times between scheduled restroom and drink breaks, UNLESS Mrs. Dart is giving direct instruction. 4. You will need to put our classroom restroom pass on your desk in order to let Mrs. Dart know where you are at. When you return from the restroom, you will need to put the pass back so that others may use it. 5. We always wash our hands before returning to the classroom if we have visited the restroom. 6. Only 1 boy and 1 girl are allowed to use the restroom at a time. 7. Mrs. Dart reserves the right to delay sending students to the restroom until she can accompany them if they are not following restroom or hallway rules. 8. If you would like to get a drink, make the letter d with your fingers and Mrs. Dart will nod her head to let you go and get your drink. 9. Mrs. Dart reserves the right to delay sending students for drinks until she can accompany them if they are not following water fountain or hallway rules. 9
10 Asking a Question 1. Please quietly raise your hand if you would like to ask a question. Please do not call out, as no one can hear what anyone else is trying to say. 2. When I see your hand quietly raised I will be able to call on you and listen to your question. 3. Please make sure you speak loud enough for Mrs. Dart and your classmates to hear your question. Asking questions is a great way to learn new information, so it is very important that we can all hear what you are asking. 4. Mrs. Dart will let you know when it is acceptable to call out, and when we need to raise our hands. Make sure to listen so that you know what time it is. 10
11 While Others Are Talking 1. It is very important that we make sure to listen to each other while they are talking. It shows respect when we listen to another when they are sharing with the class, or a partner. Everyone has fabulous ideas, and we want to make sure that we get to hear each other s smart thinkings! 2. We need to sit quietly at our seats or the carpet when someone else is speaking. It can be very distracting to others if kids are making noises and movements at their seats or the carpet. 3. Use the Magic 5 to help you how to remember to be a smart listener. 11
12 Exiting the Classroom 1. When we need to leave our classroom, Mrs. Dart will ask students to quietly line up. Mrs. Dart may ask students who are sitting quietly to line up first. 2. We should walk to our line quietly and stand exactly behind the person in front of you. You should have your hands at your side and your eyes forward. This will tell Mrs. Dart that you are ready to leave the room. 3. If you cannot line up politely and stand quietly in line, Mrs. Dart reserves the right to move you to a new place in the line where you can do your job correctly. 4. Problems in lining up will result in lining up in our student number order. 5. When everyone is standing quietly showing that they are ready for the hallway, Mrs. Dart will lead you out of the classroom. 12
13 Entering the Classroom 1. We will enter our classroom quietly. We must be respectful to the classrooms around us. 2. Mrs. Dart will instruct students to meet at the carpet, or go to their seats. Please go to the directed area quietly, and have a seat until given further directions. 3. This is a great time to earn Caught Being Good tickets. 13
14 Walking in the Hall 1. There is always a line leader and a caboose. The line leader will always walk first, and the caboose will always walk last. 2. We always walk on the right hand side of the hallway. 3. We must follow our rules for walking in a line the entire time that we are in the hallway. 4. We must always remember that others are learning. We need to show them respect by walking quietly in the hallway and setting a good example for the younger students in our school. 5. We will not touch the walls or student work in the hallway. 6. If students are not able to follow the rules of walking in the hallway, Mrs. Dart reserves the right to line students up by student number, or move children to a place in line where they can walk appropriately. 14
15 Turning Papers In 1. All completed work has a special place in our classroom. 2. Writing, Morning Work, and Center Work all have their own special folders for their work. You should keep your work organized in those folders. 3. Any work that we complete during class time will either go in your mailbox, or in the turn-in bin. Mrs. Dart will direct you in which place you should put your class work when we finish. 4. Please make sure that you listen carefully when Mrs. Dart tells you where to put your completed class work. It is very important to put your paperwork in the correct places. 5. You must always put your name and the date on the work you complete during class. It is very important that everyone puts their name on their papers so they can get returned to their rightful owner. 15
16 Homework 1. We will have some homework to complete in first grade to help us learn and grow this year. 2. Each night your child will bring home a guided reading book in their guided reading book in a bag. This book needs to be read each night at home and an adult needs to sign the reading log after the guided reading book is read. As the year progresses, there may be some variation in what and how much students read each night. Mrs. Dart will inform parents of adjustments to book in a bag changes as they occur. 3. Your child will have spelling homework each night. You will find a spelling activity sheet in your child s H.O.R.S.E folder. Your child should complete one spelling activity each night to supplement our spelling practices at school each day. 4. Some math homework will be given throughout the school year. This will be found in your child s H.O.R.S.E folder. 5. All homework should be completed at home, and then returned to school the next day in your child s H.O.R.S.E. folder, or their guided reading book in a bag. 6. Students will receive 2 grace days for uncompleted homework to be turned in, and then they will be asked to complete homework during their recess time. Special situations apply. Please talk to Mrs. Dart if you have special circumstances, and need to make adjustments to your child s homework schedule. 7. Students who complete their homework each night will be invited to choose a special reward each month. 16
17 Packing Up 1. At the end of each day, everyone will help clean up the classroom. This means that all pencils, crayons, colored pencils, glue, papers, etc. will need to be picked up off of the floor and put away. 2. Students will need to make sure that their desk areas are picked up and neat. 3. Chairs need to be put up on desks for the evening. 4. All books and learning supplies need to be put away. 5. Mrs. Dart will inspect the room. When the room is clean, she will pass back H.O.R.S.E. folders to quiet students. Students will need to get their mail and put it into their H.O.R.S.E folders. 6. After students have their folders, Mrs. Dart will dismiss them to their lockers to pack up their belongings. 7. Make sure to pack lunch pails, book in a bag, jackets, and other belongings before leaving for the evening. 8. After packing up, students should sit at the carpet and wait to be lined up for dismissal. 17
18 Going Home Routine 1. After the classroom is picked up for the evening and students are packed and at the carpet, Mrs. Dart will line students up to go home for the evening. 2. Our classroom will be divided up for dismissal with two other classrooms. It is really important for students to be quiet and respectful while being lined up so that Mrs. Dart can get everyone to their correct destination. 3. First bus run students will line up first in the hallway. Students will be lined up according to their busses. Students are expected to stand in line quietly and respectfully. 4. Second run bus students will report to a classroom to wait for their busses. They are expected to follow the rules and procedures of that classroom and show respect to teachers and friends. 5. Parent pick up and latchkey students will line up with first bus run students and will be dismissed with the first bus run students. 18
19 Classroom Supplies 1. We will use a variety of materials in our classroom each day. In order to maintain these supplies we will each need to take excellent care of them. 2. Crayons are organized in totes according to color in our classroom. Crayons will need to be put back into the correct color bin when students are finished using them. 3. All glue sticks will be kept in a tote in the classroom. Students will need to make sure that all glue lids are put on glue sticks tightly before putting them away. 4. We will not use markers frequently in our classroom. When we do use markers, Mrs. Dart will distribute them to students. When finished with markers, the lids need to be put back on tightly and returned to their tote. 5. Sharp pencils will need to be returned to the sharp pencil tote, and dull pencils will need to be placed in the dull pencil tote. 6. Erasers should be returned to their tote. 7. Students are responsible for their personal pencil boxes and the contents in them. 8. Students may not chew on or break any classroom tool. 9. Students who fail to follow these procedures will not be allowed to use classroom supplies, and will only use what they have in their own personal pencil box. 19
20 Free Choice Time 1. Each week our classroom can earn free choice time at the end of the week. This can be earned all throughout the week. 2. Students may play with classroom toys, computers, SMARTboard, etc. during free choice time. 3. We need to be respectful of each other and classrooms around us during free choice time by maintaining a quiet inside voice level. 4. Students who fail to play appropriately or quietly will lose free choice time. 5. Mrs. Dart will set a timer 6 minutes before free choice time is over. All toys and materials will need to be picked up and put away before the timer goes off. Students also need to be seated quietly at their desk. 6. If students do not have materials picked up and put away before the timer goes off, free choice time minutes will be taken away for the next time. 20
21 Classroom Jobs 1. In order to keep our classroom running smoothly, Mrs. Dart will distribute classroom jobs to students each week. 2. Students should complete their jobs when it is time to complete their job. Example: Clean-up crew will complete their job mostly at the end of the day. 3. Jobs will rotate each week so that students each get a chance to participate in classroom jobs. 4. Failure to complete jobs correctly and respectfully will result in loss of job for the remainder of the week. 21
22 Classroom Rules 1. At the beginning of each year, Mrs. Dart and her class will decide on appropriate classroom rules. 2. Our classroom rules will reflect the G.G.B. school rules. 3. We will keep our hands and feet to ourselves. 4. We will respect each other and school property. 5. We will raise our hands if we would like to share in a group setting. 6. We will listen when others are speaking. 7. Failure to follow the classroom or school rules will result in a consequence. 22
23 Consequences 1. Failure to follow classroom rules and procedures will result in a consequence. 2. A minor infraction: not following directions, disrespecting others or their property, lying, cheating, and running in the classroom or hallway, playing in restroom, yelling in classroom or hallway. These actions will result in moving card to yellow 3. A major infraction: Hitting, kicking, biting others, endangering self or others, severe rudeness, tantrums, major incompliance to rules, repetition of minor infraction. These actions will result in moving card to red. 4. Office referral: Hitting, kicking, biting, and endangering you or others, major disrespect to adults or others, damaging school property. 5. If a student is on a yellow card, they will owe ten minutes of recess with their head down. 6. If a student is on red, or receives and office referral, they will owe their entire recess time with their head down. 7. Students who land on red or yellow will complete a behavior reflection sheet during their recess time. They will discuss their behavior reflection with Mrs. Dart when they are finished. 8. Students that land on red will complete a behavior reflection sheet, discuss it with Mrs. Dart, and need to have it reviewed and signed by an adult at home. This sheet will need to be returned to school the next day after it is signed. If the behavior reflection is not signed and returned after 2 days, Mrs. Dart will call home to make arrangements to have it reviewed by a parent. 23
24 Rewards 1. Congratulations! I love to give students rewards! Rewards can be earned for a variety of things. 2. If a student completes their homework each night for an entire week, they will earn a reward. 3. Rewards range from treasure box, free choice time, snacks, extra play time, caught being good ticket, or rainbow strips. 4. Mrs. Dart will offer opportunities for students to earn rewards as individuals or as a class. 24
25 Book Bins 1. Each student will have their own guided reading book bin. 2. Each day (or when Mrs. Dart says to) students will put books from their guided reading book in a bag into their book bin. 3. Book bins are a special space for students to store the books that they enjoy reading. 4. Students may add books to their book bin from the classroom, but need to be returned to the correct tote when finished with it. 5. Book bins need to be kept neat and tidy. This is a special place to store wonderful books! 6. Book bins only leave the classroom to return books to other teachers. Book bins NEVER go home. 7. All students are expected to respect books when they are in their possession. 25
