4 Sixth Form News It has been a very busy term for year 13 students who have been completing their university applications in addition to starting their second year A Level courses. It has been well worth the hard work; although the official UCAS deadline isn t until January, the majority of our students have already received offers from a range of universities including top Russell Group institutions such as UCL, King s College, Imperial, Sheffield, Southampton and Warwick. Special congratulations to the five students for making it through to the interview stage in their applications for Oxford and Cambridge. We wish them well! In preparation for Medicine interviews we ran an authentic mock interview session with Doctor Mistry, GP trainer and interviewer from Imperial, Dr Lubel, Consultant Physician at Northwick Park Hospital and ex PM student Dr Anjali Pathak. In the meantime, Year 12 students have made an excellent start in their Post-16 courses. As part of our VI Form Enrichment, we have run a number of after school Friday workshops. To give our students a head start with building skills to succeed in their future careers, we were delighted to invite the international food manufacturing company, Bakkavor, into school who ran an excellent session on creating a CV and applying for jobs. St George s Medical School also visited us and ran a Healthcare Work Experience workshop and 10 of our Year 12 students also had the chance to take part in a Clinical Skills day at St George s Medical school. Over the last year and a half, 15 of our current Year 13 students have participated in Brunel University s Urban Scholars programme, funded by Moody s. This has involved attending Saturday sessions on, for example, Critical Thinking, Networking, Public Speaking. From this scheme, Darshan Patel was successful in winning a competitive internship with Moody s at Canary Wharf and Amina Yousef gained a free place on Debate Chamber s Law Summer School. All Scholars celebrated their Graduation from the scheme this December with a Presentation event at Brunel University. Well done! It has been especially good this term to see how enthusiastically our Year 12 students have involved themselves in a wide range of Enrichment opportunities; there have been excellent contributions to our weekly VLE on-line debates and Watch & Listen discussions and a number of students have booked themselves into after school university lectures. 6 Careers - cont d Year 8 Connect Physics STEM Workshop! Thanks our wonderful contacts at South East Physics Network (SEPNet), our students have been given another opportunity to participate in a STEM Workshop that runs termly! The project aims to introduce students to the variety of topics that are part of the study of Physics and encourage students to discover the links between these topics. The team deliver the following messages to students: Anyone can do physics. Physics is exciting, relevant & important; it goes beyond the classroom. Studying physics further broadens career possibilities. The first session was active, fun and informative! 15 out of 17 students said that they would come back and complete sessions 2 and 3! The workshop featured Physics Connecting Games based on the KS3 science curriculum, followed by student led Connection Challenge. The students were treated to simple eye-catching demonstrations and the latest in physics research, The Year 8 students also challenge the SEPNet team to connect two everyday objects / phenomena through physics. We have budding scientist in our mists! 6

7 Careers - cont d The Careers Department has a year jammed packed with events, workshops and group sessions because every child should leave school prepared for life in modern Britain! Maths Department This term eighty-four year 12 and 13 Maths A-level students took part in the Individual Senior Maths Challenge run by the UKMT. 9 School Council The School Council presented Ms. Samiah Shah and Ms. Manar Taqi with plants in November. These teachers won a School Council Competition for 'Best Classroom'. Students graded classrooms on their vibrancy, displays, being educationally stimulating, tidy, and for just being 'a nice place to arrive to learn in.' Well done Ms. Shah and Ms. Taqi! The School Council have been hard at work this year. They have lobbied the SLT on a number of issuess. These include; painted lines on the basketball court, improvements to toilets, a proposed a film night to raise money for a local charity, and they have asked the School to consider an increased number of 'life skills' lessons to be delivered through the PSHEE programme. They have also met with representatives from the local charity, St Luke's Hospice on ways the School and the Hospice can work together. The School Council at Preston Manor has always been a force for positive change and this year's Council are fully focused on doing just that. 10 Performing Arts Once again September got off to a flying start for The Faculty of Performing Arts at Preston Manor as it was announced that the School had been awarded Roland s prestigious Champion School for Music status for a fifth year running. In September students in Year 7 enjoyed the annual Faculty of Performing Arts Afternoon during which they sang the by now legendary songs The Green Army and Bin It, watched Miss Gratton s Dance Company and an interpretation though movement of the comic book and movie character Wonder Woman. In November, Ms Stych, Preston Manor s new Head of Drama directed her first production of DNA which is also a GCSE set text. Students from years 10 and 11 showcased their acting skills in an atmospheric production based around the story of a group of teenagers who do something bad, then lie to cover the whole thing up and when they find their cover-up story unites them and brings harmony to the gang, there is little incentive to tell the truth. The play was staged on the floor of the hall to a sell-out audience who were invited to enter the crime scene via the quad garden. In December over 60 primary school students from the Junior Music Academy, alongside special guest performers from The English National Opera and The Guildhall School of Music and Drama performed 3 Themes from the Opera Aida under the musical direction of Mr Crawley. The audience, who also sang along during the open rehearsal and sharing where very impressed by the dedication and talent of these young musicians. The term ended with the Faculty of Performing Arts as a whole contributing Drama, Dance and Music to the annual Upper School Awards Ceremony. 10

19 Compass has been very busy this term, especially during these last few weeks. We held the ARPs Parents Winter Gathering on 14th December, which gave parents the chance to meet and chat about their children and school. They completed questionnaires and discussed using social networking to communicate and keep in touch. This evening was also a time for some former parents and students to say thank you and farewell to Ms Reid, who will sadly be leaving us this month after 13 years of teaching at Preston Manor. All students created handmade Christmas cards to sell at the Preston Manor Christmas Fair on 15th December. The Year 11 students ran the Compass Christmas Cards and Cakes stall at the fair to fulfil their Community Project requirements for the Prince s Trust Personal Development Achieve Programme. This was a wonderful opportunity for these students to take part in raising money for the Rays of Sunshine charity and learn how to plan a project and why there is a need for them in the wider community. 19
