2 GIN GIN International Forum, 9-11 October 2015 The Mission Statement for the Global Issues Network (GIN) is To empower young people to collaborate locally, regionally and globally in order to create sustainable solutions for global issues. The Global Issues Network (GIN) group at the International School of Bremen (ISB) has always been conscious and active on issues that are current and of great concern to the people of our world. With this in mind and truly espousing the GIN Mission Statement, a forum was planned on the issue that is currently not far from people s thoughts and minds in Germany and especially in and around Bremen, i.e. the arrival of refugees and asylum seekers from war-torn countries from the Middle East and beyond. To explore this issue we invited and hosted the International School of Düsseldorf and the Halcyon School, London, to join us for the event. We also invited some expert voices to address the forum on the issues around the arrival of these people into Bremen. holding a bake sale which raised 150 to assist with transport for the refugees. Residents from the refugee shelter joined the forum on the Friday evening and shared stories of their journey from their home countries to Bremen while socialising with the delegates at a barbecue. The forum was a tremendous success; thanks go to all members of the ISB community involved with this event who so generously gave of their time to support the forum. We are especially proud of the members of the ISB GIN group whose teamwork, planning and dedication will stand them in good stead as knowledgeable and caring citizens who will be a voice to be heard and listened to in the global village of the future. (Mrs. Zupanc and Mr. Robinson-Slater) See also the article in this month s Science Department Newsletter, being sent to you as an attachment Forums of this kind however are about hearing and sharing the voice of young people, and to this end there were some magnificent presentations by the young people from the ISB and our visitors. A really special feature of the forum was the opportunity for the ISB community to interact with the local refugee group. The forum delegates took part in a massive bake off and with the generous help of the ISB community were able to pack and deliver over 600 goody bags to the refugee shelter as well as 2 Parent Bulletin 6 November 2015

3 University and Career Guidance Counselling (Grades 9-12) Information Afternoon with Carl Benz School for Grades 9-12 On Monday, 16 November, representatives of the Carl Benz School of Engineering will be visiting the ISB to speak to students of Grades The Carl Benz School of Engineering, the mechanical engineering school of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) offers a 3-year English-taught B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering programme. Students may specialize in Automotive Engineering, Energy Engineering, Production Management and Railway Systems Technology and they must do two six-week internships in industry to gain practical skills for their future. 4 Library News Volunteers Required! The ISB Library is still looking for volunteers to help out on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. If you would like to help, please contact Mrs. Holsten at: ISB Library Multilingual Festival This will take place from November in the ISB Library. Mrs. Holsten is still looking for native speakers of the following languages: Arabic, Chinese Mandarin, Dutch, Farsi, French, German Plattdeutsch, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish who would like to share their languages with the children during scheduled library times. If you can spare some time to present your language to our students, please contact Mrs. Holsten at: Website of the Week This is a free, online natural history encyclopedia with everything you need to know about animals or biological creatures. User-friendly interface! (Recommended by Christian, Grade 10) INTRODUCING... Mr. Frankie Tun, Secondary Maths / Science Originally coming from Burma (Myanmar), Mr. Tun joined the ISB in In the 1990s in Burma, he was a wellknown songwriter and also taught at the NIVA International School in Bangkok, Thailand where he was awarded the Best Teacher Service Award for the years He graduated from the University of Yangon and later earned his MEd at Assumption University of Thailand. Apart from teaching Maths and Science, Mr. Tun is currently serving as the Chairman of the ISB Works Council. 5 25 Years Bremen Drop Tower 2015 is a very special year for Bremen s Drop Tower (Fallturm) as it is celebrating 25 years of age! In September 1990, the first experimental drop was triggered by Germany s then Federal Minister for Research, Dr. Heinz Riesenhuber. Since then, scientific teams the world over and coming from the most diverse fields of research travel to Bremen to do their experiments in the most pure weightlessness on earth. To this day, over 7000 experiments have taken place in this worldwide unique research laboratory. To celebrate their 25th Jubilee, ZARM will be opening the Drop Tower to the people of Bremen on Win an Exclusive Visit to the Pinnacle of the Drop Tower! At the Open Day, there will be a prize draw to win a visit to the Drop Tower s pinnacle! At a height of 140 metres, the Panorama Lounge offers a 360 view of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen - a suitable date will be arranged with the winner. Please note that, for safety reasons, the pinnacle cannot be visited during the Open Day. Sunday, 15 November from 10.00am to 4.00pm Various info stands are available and visitors will have the rare opportunity of visiting the research laboratory and learning about the basic principles of weightlessness as well as about how the Drop Tower works. They will gain an insight into day-to-day operations by visiting the Control Centre where the capsule dropping experiment is controlled. The inner drop tube in which the experiments take place can also be visited.
