We have record numbers of students participating throughout the Eisteddfod weeks. I would like to publicly thank Noeleen, Beth and all our staff for their support of the students over this very busy time. Yesterday we got word that our Year 10 student Joshua Maloney was awarded the Drama Scholarship and asked to perform at the Gala Concert. This photo is of Josh 30 seconds after Noeleen told him he had won the scholarship. PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE WEEK ALTERNATIVE TIMETABLE next week (12 th -15 th June) Just like last term our staff will be participating in curriculum groups for their professional practice days. To allow this to happen, we will have an alternative timetable for next week which will include excursions to the Trade Training Centre and Riverside Training Centre, Latrobe University, Ten Pin Bowling, Tree Planting and activities such as peer mentoring, creating Indigenous Artworks, Hypotheticals, etc. The alternative timetable will be posted on our facebook page as well as on the XUNO portal. Please keep an eye out for it and ensure that you are prepared for the week. Whilst the students are enjoying the week, the staff will be making visits to Sunraysia schools, participating in professional development with experts flying up from Melbourne, and working together to develop viable curriculum. YEAR 6 DISCOVERY DAYS take place next Thursday and Friday (14 th -15 th June) We are welcoming over 200 Year 6 students to visit our school for a short period of time to experience a secondary school setting. Mrs Symes has been working very hard to ensure that our visitors will enjoy their time, thanks Anne. NORTH WEST REGIONAL PRINCIPAL CONFERENCE (12 th -13 th June) Anne Symes, Gregor Allan and myself are attending the conference in Melbourne next week along with all of our colleagues from our huge Region. There are international speakers and opportunities to network and participate in workshops. Gregor, Fi Arnold (Nichols Point PS) and myself will be presenting a Peer Learning Lab at the Conference to up to 100 of our peers. We look forward to sharing the work and learning we have been undertaking for a number of years now around Buildling Leadership Teams and Positive Workplaces.

2 PAGE 2 LADY PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN 21 st June Please get around this and support our staff and school by purchasing a ticket for what will be a huge, fun-filled night with friends. Our staff along with some students have been rehearsing for the past few months on Thursday afternoons as well as on weekends and making props for the performance, it would be great if they were able to perform to a full house. Jo McQuinn Principal Enrichment Round 2 Our second round of enrichment saw over one hundred students from a number of local primary schools participate in a subject of their choice. The choices range from drama, wood, canoeing, writing, maths, science, art/print making etc. Here the kids are fuelling up with snacks before their workshops.

3 PAGE 3 MARKET DAY YR 10 BUSINESS On Friday the first of June, Mr Andrews Year 10 Business class ran their Market day. In glorious sunshine, students plied their trade selling condiments and fast food. Hearty congratulations to all of the students involved who managed to turn a profit on the day. A special thanks to the ongoing assistance of Adrian Taylor, Sally Corless, Loretta Clyne and Noeleen Davis who provided assistance on the day. Getting On Country This term we took some of our Indigenous students out of school for the day to continue their cultural learning and awareness. It was great to see some new kids getting on country this time round and we all learnt some important lessons about connection, culture and collective support. Thanks to Byrnsie for organising a great BBQ lunch. We look forward to the next opportunity to get out on country, which will be early in term 3. Great Community Support for our Local Sporting Events Our senior students have been actively involved in some great community work this term. Our kids umpired both sporting carnivals at Nichols Point Primary School in Football, Hockey, Soccer and Netball, which provided the teachers with valuable time to coach their teams. Your students helped make this day a success for both our teams. Without their expert umpiring skills and enthusiastic feedback to players I would have had to umpire each game, instead I was able to coach my team and provide them with the guidance they needed to make their day enjoyable Thanks ISC. - Irymple P.S Team Coach

4 PAGE 4 Rich Tasks and Investigations in Maths Our focus this year is to include more rich tasks and investigations where students work together using their maths skills on an unfamiliar problems. Here s Louisa and Shakara working on a rich task using Linear Equations in Year 10 Maths. Maths Challenge Students undertaking the Maths Challenge are reminded that the three weeks will be up at the end of next week. See Ms Boyce if you need some support on any of the six questions. Maths Competition A reminder to pay the $5 entry fee before the end of term to enter this annual competition. Year Nine Ten Pin Bowling Tuesday 12 th June All Year 9 students will be going to Ten Pin Bowling in the middle of day next Tuesday. Please make sure your permission forms and $5 fee are handed into the office by this Friday, 8 th June Year 10 Snow Camp

5 PAGE 5 Interschool Netball Monday 4 th June Year 7 Team The year 7 girls came away with 2 wins for the day. Some great connections made on the court for a team playing together for the first time, especially between goal shooters Ieesha Williams and Tahlia Hudson. Charlie Scarrott was powerful in defence using her height to advantage and Mikayla Zappia made good space through the mid-court. A great game by all girls. Coach: Rachel Thomas Year 8 Team The Year 8 girls faced some tough competition for the day and unfortunately did not come away with a win. Jordyn Casey played a strong attacking game, scoring most of the teams goals, with Olivia Orwell, Keesha Crilly and Zali Doolan working well in the defensive end. Annabelle Nicholls, Bethany Hartwig, Bree Hammence and Kayla Burling demonstrated their versatility, playing in a range of positions on the day. Well done to all the girls on their efforts and persistence throughout the day. Coach: Natalie Timmis Year 7/8 Team After a cold start to the day, the sun finally came out and it was a beautiful day to play netball. We won two games and lost three and each player showed great sportsmanship throughout the day. They were all willing to try different positions on the court is needed and the girls were a delight to coach. Coach: Fiona Zambelli

6 PAGE 6 Year 9 Team The year 9 girls fought very hard all day, but only managed to win one game. Highlights of the day were Dekkotah Irwin s give and go plays which helped her secure many goals, Makayla Lia s new fond love for the Centre position, Skie Sherwell s determination to push through the pain of exhaustion, Paige Atkinson s ability to keep chewing that chewy throughout the whole day, Claudia Fangaloka s never say die attitude to intercepting balls all over the court, Elyza Penny s newly learnt move of the front cut, Bella Walsh s ability to just keep on running in the Centre and Tameeka Curreen who was quite content just sitting back in that Goal Shooter position and plugging away all day. Coach: Michelle Beswick Year 10 Team This team looked good on paper, but were even better when they were on the court! No team could match their skills on the day with the closest game being against St Joes where they beat them 13 to 7. Louisa Stevens was the little pocket rocket for the day, who improved out of sight! This team were undefeated all day and will now progress on to the next stage next term in Eucha. A big thank you must go to Alana Mills who worked with all these netballers during term 1 from Netball Victoria who then came out and coached these girls on the day. 7 PAGE 7 SPORT REPORT: Interschool Cross Country Apex Park, May 23 rd Our school produced some great individual and team efforts on what turned out to be an overcast and cool day which was an ideal one for runners. We had 2 individual age group champions with Brooke Hards and Ben Doherty (pictured below) first over the line in the 16 Yrs Girls and 13 Yrs Boys 3km run s respectively. We also had 2 other runners finish in the top 3 and a number of runners finish in the top 10 for their age group. Students who finished in the top 10 are listed below. Boys 13 Yrs Hamayun Nasirie - 6 th Isaiah Bettess - 9 th 14 Yrs Ben Doherty - 1 st Kade Baynes - 5 th Bayley Kelly - 10 th 16 Yrs Jordan Stainer - 4 th Girls Hanna Zambelli - 2 nd Jorja Delcastegne - 9 th Bethany Hartwig - 5 th Annabel Nichols - 10 th Brooke Hards - 1 st Chloe Barker - 3 rd Natasha Parks - 4 th In the teams section, we had 2 teams win their division, those being the 13 Yrs and 14 Yrs Boys. Congratulations to all the competitors on how well you performed, and how well you represented the school. As a result or their performances, we had a number of students who competed at St Arnaud on Tuesday 5 th June. State Golf Championships

8 PAGE 8 Year 8 student Ben Doherty competed in the State Golf Championships which were played at the Gardiners Run Golf Course in Melbourne on Friday 25 th May. Ben carded a score of 87 for the 18 hole stroke event and finished 56 th in a field of 80. Not a bad effort by Ben considering he was competing against students up to and including Yr 9. Congratulations to Ben on qualifying and representing the college at the championships. Thanks also to parent Garth Doherty for taking his son Ben to the championships.
