1 Principal s chat Newsletter No 8 April 24th 2017 Welcome to term 2. I hope that you all had a restful break. It was great to see some of our students taking part in the annual Maldon Easter Parade. Many thanks to the parents who walked along and supported the students. All the compliments and easter eggs were very well received. Thank you also to Rose, who was the main organiser behind the complimentary caravan, and Kathryn who was very busy in the art room last term helping students make their flags. This term we welcome Laura Parkhill to the grade 4/5 classroom. Laura will be in the 4/5 classroom for the remainder of the year. Here is a small snippet from Laura : My name is Laura Parkhill, I am from Castlemaine. My favourite subject is PE and I enjoy playing a range of different sports. I play and coach netball for Sandhurst Football Netball Club. I am really looking forward to being a part of Maldon Primary School and getting to know students, parents and the community and I hope I can assist the students to reach their full potential. Over the holiday break the remaining building works were completed. This included new flooring in the corridors and entry ways, repairing and replacing down pipes and guttering under the skillion area and putting up bird netting to eradicate the pigeons and their lovely droppings from the skillion area. The area is all pigeon poo free at the moment and Liam and Louella spent time last week giving the drink tap area a really good clean. Many thanks to Marton and Tom who spent time over the break clearing and tidying up the area at the side of the building, They relocated the bamboo to the vegie patch area and laid rocks to create a safe and useable space for our students. They have more plans ahead, so stay posted!! Tomorrow is Anzac Day and students and their families are invited to join the march and/or attend the service to commemorate all Australians and New Zealanders "who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. 2 Anzac Day Service Maldon Tuesday April 25th 10:30am Anzac March commences from the school (assemble at school gate) 10:45am Meet at Cenotaph 11:00am Anzac Day Service commences Our school captains, Isaac and Tia, will be representing our school and laying a wreath. Isaac has also been invited to read his winning story from last year s Remembrance Day writing competition at the service. Kathryn has been working with students around the ANZAC day theme and they have completed some lovely pieces of art which are on display in the corridors. Laura will be absent on Wednesday and is being replaced by Bryce. Alisa and John are attending a Professional Development day next Monday and will be replaced by Kellie and Kathryn. Debra will be absent on Thursday and on Friday morning so please leave non urgent matters until her return on Friday afternoon. Jodie will be absent Friday afternoon. Eagle Eye awards Theo and Eva School Captain update The first week back hasn t had much on but it s been a good start to term 2 and this week will have a bit more on. On Tuesday we have a public holiday for Anzac Day. We will be laying the wreath at the day ceremony. It starts at the school at 10:30am if you want to come. We also welcomed a new teacher Laura who will be teaching the 4/5 class. She likes sport and English. The grade 6s were very excited to get their grade 6 tops. Last week s behaviour awards were for those who settled in and got back to learning the best. Even though it s not a classroom behaviour we just chose to do that because it s the first week back. Congratulations to our winners. This week s behaviour is the treatment rule. The treatment rule is when you treat others the way you want to be treated. 3 What s happening in the classroom? Young leaders: Young Leaders Friday FUNdraiser Please leave orders with your classroom teacher. Available each Friday are: Homemade Sausage rolls $2.50, Juice Box $1.50 and Popcorn $1 The Young Leaders chicken whisperers group has been busy improving the chicken enclosure. They have added proper feeders and water dispensers and this wouldn t have been possible without Amanda (Issy s Mum) who made the dispensers. Their long term goal is to renovate the whole shed. They are currently selling the eggs that the chooks lay. Please see Debra if you would like to buy some. 3/4D Hospital visit: Fundraising news Bunnings BBQ fundraiser: Our first major fundraiser for 2017 is just around the corner with the Bunnings Sausage Sizzle scheduled for Sunday May 28th. We require a volunteer to coordinate this event which runs from 8am to 4pm. Please see Debra in the office or catch Anita or Nicole in the school ground if you are able to coordinate this event. Office Information Permission notes and payments to be returned: Grade 5 and 6 camp deposit of $60, Grade 3 and 4 camp deposit of $60, Grade 2 camp deposit of $50 and Grade 1 camp deposit of $25 are now OVERDUE. Please make these payments/return reply slips immediately so that the school can determine whether the camps will go ahead. Term 2 netbook instalments: If you have a child in Grade 4,5 or 6 and have elected to pay the netbook lease fee in instalments the term 2 instalment of $25 is now OVERDUE. Please make this payment by Friday otherwise students will be unable to take their netbooks home until payment is made. Student achievements Congratulations to Laura who was recently awarded 8th GUP Yellow which is second stripe for yellow belt in taekwondo. She was also awarded Best yellow belt at the grading by regional examiner GM Rozinsky who said publicly that she has the potential to be a future champion. Well done Laura.
