1 February 2012 Kirk Savage, Principal Tel P RINCIPAL S MESSAGE February is already here and with it, we are starting to see some samplings of spring with warmer weather and sunny skies. Programming at ADR is in full swing with academic classes just entering third term and for fun we are just finishing Spirit Week. On Tuesday, our Leadership Students hosted a Valentine s Day Dance at lunchtime. It was well attended and our students had a lot of fun. The highlight of the dance for me was seeing Rayn M. serenading the group with the song A Thousand Years Well done Rayn! Our basketball teams are doing very well as playoffs have begun see the Athletics Section in this newsletter for more details of sports action. Hint our Grade 9 girls are playing in the finals at Rosedale Middle on Friday at 2:30 pm. Report Cards Report Cards will not be going home at all for second term. Unlike first term reports, where we sent home blank reports, we will not send blank reports home again. Look forward to report cards being sent home once the labour dispute between the BCTF and the government is over. Until then, please contact your child s teacher directly for regular progress updates. Grade 6 Visits On Tuesday and Thursday this week, some of our ADR staff has been visiting our elementary feeder schools to talk to the grade 6 students about coming here next September. I had the privilege of visiting Central & Robertson Elementary Schools on Tuesday, and it was a lot of fun. The grade 6 students are very excited about coming to middle school next year and they really impressed me with lots of insightful questions. Thank You PAC! Thank you to our ADR PAC who has been helping out programing this year at Rundle through financial support. Recently our PAC has helped our school purchase a number of items to support our students. These items include: sports uniforms, upgrading our weight room, band equipment, and equipment for our Outdoor Education Program. The help afforded to us from our PAC helps our students greatly. 2 A.D. Rundle Middle School Newsletter February 2012 Pro-D Day (Friday, February 17, 2012) Just a reminder that tomorrow is a professional day and the school is closed. All students should rest up and enjoy the day to be ready to return (on time!) on Monday. After School Math Tutoring A reminder that after school tutoring in Math is available to students every Thursday from 2:30 to 3:30 pm in Room 103. Term 2 Success Assembly (Tuesday, February 22, 2012) We are having our Success Assembly on Tuesday, February 22, This assembly celebrates the many accomplishments our students have achieved over term 2. There will be several student performances and parents are invited to attend. A bell schedule will be posted on our website shortly. Attendance Regular attendance at school is critical to school success. Research shows us that habits student develop by the age of 15 are a good predictor of their future success. To recog- nize students who are attending school regularly, we drew names from each Grade for students who had exceptional attendance. For every two weeks of perfect attendance (no lates or absences) students names are placed in a draw for movie passes to Cottonwood 4. At our Term 2 Success Assembly, we will have our Grand Prize draw for an Apple IPod Touch. Good luck to all who qualify! Homework Requests Please log onto ADR s website to access homework posted daily by your child s teachers. If your child is absent from school for 3 or more days, a homework request may be sent via to each of your child s teachers. If the Internet is not available in your home, please contact the school office with your request ADR School Yearbooks Just a reminder that A.D. Rundle Middle School Yearbooks are still available for purchase. They are $35.00 and will be published in full color. Come to the school office to order and pay for yours now! 3 A.D. Rundle Middle School Newsletter February 2012 ATHLETICS Basketball Grade 8 Boys Led by coach Williamson the boys are in their quest to qualify for the Fraser Valley Championships. This Thursday the boys will play to determine if their season continues, the opponent is TBD. Kudos to Andrew Rulton and Ethan Pearce, Grade 7 students, who recently joined the ranks of the Grade 8 team. Coach Williamson is impressed with the courtside leadership of Dylan Garrett and Kayl Graydon. Good luck boys! Grade 8 Girls The girls were coached by parent coach, Mrs. Hildebrandt. Good efforts from the girls, best of luck next year. Grade 9 Boys The boys ended their season recently with a first round playoff loss against CMS. Injuries and illnesses plagued the team later in the season. Mr. Williamson wanted to say thanks to the boys for a good effort this season. Grade 9 Girls This past weekend the Grade 9 Girls participated in the GWG invitational basketball tourney and placed 4 th out of 8 teams in the tournament. Great performances from all girls, in particular, Sage Wilson was selected 1 st string All Star, and Lily Law was chosen as a player of the game during one of this weekend s games. In league play the ladies continued there impressive season with a win over the GWG Grizzlies in first round playoff action by a score of The girls are playing in the finals on Friday, February 17th at 2:30 pm at the new Rosedale Traditional Community School. Go Team Go!! Thanks to coaches Mr. Allanson and Forstbauer for coaching and to the Grade 9 Girls for a great season! Volleyball Grade 7 Girls The girls are getting geared up for games. There will be 2 home play dates. Wednesday, March 14 th and Wednesday, April 4 th against a variety of schools. Miss Wernicke is our coach. Please check our website for further details. Grade 8/9 Girls The girls are preparing for their season to be underway shortly once the basketball season has finished. Starting next week, practices will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30-3:45 p.m. Games will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A schedule of games will be available shortly. Mr. Shea and Mr. Goodman are coaching these teams. Daylight Savings Time Daylight Savings time starts Sunday, March 11, Don t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour.

4 Thursday, March 8, 2012 This is just a reminder to all students and parents that Thursday is the annual ADR Olympics! The whole school packs up and spends the day at the Landing Sports Centre as members of Harry Potter teams! Students must be wearing their colours: Team Ravenclaw (Cores 71, 81, & 91) Blue Team Slytherrin (Cores 72, 82, 92 & 95) - Green Team Gryffindor (Cores 73, 83, & 93) - Red Team Hufflepuff (Cores 74, 84, & 94) - White The students participate in fun, physically active events, and practice team spirit! Please note that this is a school day and all students are required to attend and stay on site for the entire day. A permission slip will be sent home sometime next week. What happens? Students are to arrive at school at the regular time and classes will walk to the Landing Sports Centre supervised by their teachers. Students will be dismissed from the Landing Sports Centre at approximately 2 pm. Bussed students will walk back with their classes to the school to catch their bus. Lunch: Lunches may be purchased or students may bring one from home. A hotdog, juice box, and chips will be sold for $3.00. Additional hotdogs will be $1.00 each. What to bring: Wear active clothing ~ runners, shorts/sweat pants, team coloured t-shirt (see above for appropriate colour)! We recommend that students not bring anything of value to the Landing Sports Center, as there are no facilities to lock up belongings. Do not bring skateboards, purses, cameras, cell phones, personal MP3 players, Ipods, etc... We are not responsible for the loss of articles at the Landing Sports Centre. Parents are Welcome!

February 7, 2012 Dear Parents/Guardians: RE: REPORTING STUDENT PROGRESS FOR TERM TWO AND SEMESTER ONE The purpose of this letter is to explain why there will not be final Semester One report cards or reports for Term Two. The labour dispute between the BC Teachers Federation (BCTF) and the BC Public School Employers Association (BCPSEA) that started at the beginning of this school year is ongoing. Some of the activities the BCTF indicated teachers will not engage in during current strike activity include: prepare or distribute report cards; and provide any student assessment data to Administrative Officers or the school office, except grade 12 marks required for graduation, post-secondary applications and scholarship purposes. Some principals and vice-principals have teaching assignments in addition to their administrative responsibilities. If your child is in a class taught exclusively by a principal or viceprincipal, then you should receive a report. If your child is in Grade 12, then you should receive your child s final grades for Semester One courses shortly. The BCTF has made it clear on their website that parents can contact teachers to set up a meeting at a mutually agreeable time. If you wish to receive an update with regard to your son or daughter s progress you are encouraged to contact the appropriate teacher(s) by either or phone.
