1 Newmarket State School Newsletter Thank you Friday November Issue No. 18 Principal s Points Upcoming Events Prep Orientation 1 Tuesday, 21 November Prep Orientation 2 Thursday, 23 November School Disco Thursday, 23 November Swimming Carnival Friday, 24 November P&C Meeting Tuesday 28 November 7pm in the LARC Year 6 Graduation Thursday, 30 November Christmas Concert Tuesday, 5 December Proposed Bunnings BBQ Saturday, 22 December Thank you so much to the group of ten parents who joined Mr Gradwell and me at the recent working bee. Much was achieved including clearing drains, planting shrubs and mulching gardens. Your efforts were very much appreciated! With the work done at the working bee, the new Year 6IL rose garden and the painting of A Block, the school really is looking wonderful! Classes for 2018 Currently, our predicted enrolment for 2018 is 276 students. This is slightly more students than our current enrolment and 25 more students than when we started the year. It is probable that we will gain a class in 2018 however there is a possibility that we will remain at eleven classes depending whether families relocate unexpectedly. As there is still uncertainty regarding final numbers, class allocations will be available on Thursday 18 January from 9am in the undercover area outside the LARC. Class locations and allocations will also be displayed outside the LARC on the first day of the school year, Monday 22 January. To assist in planning, we would appreciate if you could please notify the office as a matter of urgency if your children will not be returning to Newmarket State School in Should you need to make me aware of any information regarding the class placement of your child, please do so by . Please be aware that much consideration goes in to the placement of students in classes. Our teachers consider academic achievement, social and emotional state of being and behaviour as well as special needs. We strive to have a balance in our classrooms for the sake of the students and the teachers so that optimal learning can take place. Whilst all concerns will be taken into consideration, it is not always possible to comply with all requests. Thank you for your understanding with this matter. Prep Orientation Morning On Tuesday, 21 November and Thursday, 23 November, we will be holding Prep Orientation mornings in our Prep classroom from 9:00am am for students attending Prep in The children will meet the teachers and be involved in a range of activities. Whilst this is happening, the current Prep students will spend some time in the Year 1 classrooms with the Year 1 teachers. Prep parents will have the opportunity to meet other parents over morning tea and also access the Uniform Shop which will be open for your convenience from 9:00am 10:30am. We look forward to your attendance. Surprise visit! Last Thursday afternoon, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Shadow Minister for Education and Shadow Minister for Women, Tanya Plibersek as well as the local state member, Mark Furner dropped in for a visit to our school. It was an informal gathering with Tanya keen to hear the views of the principal, teachers and P&C representatives regarding issues in schools and how funding can be used to improve outcomes. An enjoyable afternoon, with stimulating conversation! Both Tanya and Mark were delighted when I presented them with a Newmarket centenary book each so that they could learn more about the history of our school. Page 1 of 8

2 Principals Points Continued Swimming Carnival On Friday, 24 November from 9.15am until midday, we are holding a swimming carnival for students in Years 4-7. As many of our 9 yr old students are now in Year 3, we have opened the carnival to those students. Students who are born in 2009 will remain at school and it is optional as to whether Year 3 nine year olds participate. If the children are not ready to participate, there is no pressure to do so. All children in Years 4-7 are expected to participate and events will cater for the different ability levels. We will be catching a bus from NSS to the Oakleigh State School Pool. Parents are most welcome to attend. More details will be forthcoming closer to the event. Farewell to our Year 6 Students On Thursday, 30 November at 6.00pm, our Year 6 students and their families will be attending the Year 6 Graduation Ceremony. This event officially brings to a close the primary years for these students. On behalf of our school community, I would like to wish each of our students the best for the future. As one significant time of their lives comes to an end, I trust that our Year 6 students enter the next chapter of their lives with excitement and confidence. Student Leadership 2018 The process of electing school captains for 2018 will begin next week. We will be holding elections for school captains on Wednesday 22 November, after our current Year 5 candidates have presented their speeches in the hall. A student leadership camp for all school captains in City Cluster will be held early in This is a City Cluster initiative which will enhance the leadership skills of the students and assist them in recognising ways that they can contribute to the betterment of their school. All other leadership positions will be decided next year. School Disco A school disco, supervised by the teaching staff, will be held in conjunction with the Footsteps dance program on Thursday 23 November. Prep Year 3 from 5.00pm -6.00pm and Years 4 6 from 6.00pm -7.00pm. More details will be forthcoming early next week. 3 Newmarket State School Newsletter Library News Year 3 Drama Workshop Jack, Leonard, Hamish, Linus and Darcy getting into character. Our Year 3 students participated in a drama workshop last Friday during their library lesson, presented on a complimentary basis by coaches from the drama studio Speak-Up. Miss Tess and Miss Lauren first put the girls and boys through their paces, mimicking the moves and accents of various characters from the Winnie the Pooh books. Next, the children watched an excerpt of a Winnie the Pooh movie, to hone their dramatic skills via observation. Finally, divided into five groups, the children reenacted scenes from one of author A.A. Milne s beloved books. Thank you to Miss Lauren and Miss Tess for your coaching and for the fun we had! Returning Books before the Christmas Break The end of the school year is just around the corner. All books need to be returned by the end of Week 8. Overdue notices have been issued. If your child receives one, please return the relevant book/s. If you cannot locate the book/s, please write us a note or pop into the library to see us. We shall ask you to cover the replacement cost, or supply a new book. Thank you. Happy reading! Penny Benson and Mary Gannon Sapharius showing Miss Hamer that she is an expert at 500 piece jigsaws, as she completed a map of Australia. Lucas offered the vote of thanks at the end of session, presenting Miss Tess and Miss Lauren with a certificate and some sweets. The Year 3 Thespians Pictures from 1G Year 1 students used laptops to complete their multimodal presentation for English! Many thank to the year 4 s for lending their laptops. Page 3 of 8
