1 Nelson College for Girls N E W S L E T T E R TERM 3 WEEK Kia ora tatou katoa Dear Parents, Caregivers and Whanau Our students continue to make us very proud of their efforts on the national stage. Two weeks ago Stella Nova, our premier choir, took part for the first time in the national Big Sing competition. They truly exemplified our values of PRIDE as they worked on a very tight time frame to continually strive for the highest standard. In spite of illness amongst the group, they rose to the occasion and were awarded a Bronze Medal. Their efforts and those of Rebecca Monopoli, their amazing director, were truly stellar! Our winter sports teams have also performed on the national stage during the Winter Tournament held last week. The Netball team played in Invercargill and came in 12th, the Basketball Team played here in Nelson and came in 10th, while the Football Team, despite a bout of sickness, did well by placing 19th. The Hockey team came 15th equal in very damp conditions in Whangarei. The Junior Under Water Hockey team won their competition and the Seniors came 4th, with the College winning runner up for top school. Huge congratulations to all of our girls on these successes. SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS It is now the time of year where our senior students test themselves in our school examinations to see how close they are to the performance needed in the external examinations. Here too, our students need to exemplify our values of PRIDE by striving to do their very best in these examinations, and thereby to ensure even greater success at the end of the year. In many areas in tertiarty education, the expectation of the results needed at senior secondary has been lifted considerably and our students therefore need to continually strive to do their very best academically. BOARD OF TRUSTEES What do you think of ERO s parent booklets? The Education Review Office (ERO) publishes a series of five booklets for parents and caregivers. ERO want s to find out how useful the information is to parents, how the booklets can be improved, and if parents would prefer to receive the information in a different way. ERO is starting with a survey of How is my child doing? To take part in the survey go to Process/For-Parents/ERO-Guides-for-Parents/Asking-theright-questions-at-school. The survey runs until the end of September and only takes a few minutes to complete. 2 SPRING FASHION FLING Once again huge congratulations must go to our PTA for their 3rd highly successful Spring Fashion Fling. This event has now become a very popular occasion for both shops and consumers, as well as being a fun night. Congratulations too to our staff and students who acted as models. They looked amazing! This is the PTA s main fundraising venture for the year and raises money to promote resources for the school that we could not otherwise fund. We are very grateful to them. WORK DAY A huge thank you to all who have taken part in our Work Day fundraiser. Sadly government funding is not sufficient to provide all of the resources that we need. Replacement of a minivan, which is very much a necessary part of transporting our students, is a large financial undertaking. We hope that this fundraising effort will cover the shortfall of funds that we have. We realise that for some it has not been possible to take part in this initiative and we understand this. Cathy Ewing PRINCIPAL INTERNATIONAL The international girls and boys from the Nelson Colleges made the most of good snow at the Rainbow ski field! The day started with a 90 minute lesson where novice skiers and snowboarders were voted best class of the year by their two ski instructors! After lunch the girls put their new-found skills into practice and had fun on the slopes! 3 SCHOOL ONLINE SYSTEMS All these systems may be accessed online, at anytime, anywhere where you have internet access. Our new website homepage looks like this. At the bottom of each page you will see icons that link you to our contact page, Twitter, Moodle and Home page. Our website does not and will not contain information pertaining to everyday housekeeping, this will all be found in Moodle. PLEASE DO NOT USE OUR CONTACT FORM TO INFORM US OF ABSENCES, THIS MUST BE DONE THROUGH THE CORRECT S FOUND IN MOODLE ON THE FRONT PAGE. KAMAR THE WEB PORTAL By logging into KAMAR through the Web Parent Portal, which is accessed via the front page of Moodle, you can access your daughter s attendance, her timetable, the main school notices. You can also access her grades and (once uploaded) her report. Parents were given their login at the beginning of the year via . Moodle is a Learning Management System which is used by many schools and tertiary institutions both in New Zealand and overseas. As a parent you have access to information here without logging on. Here you can see term dates, the newsletter, the calendar etc. From Moodle, students can login through the portal to gain access to their classes. Microsoft Outlook is the mail system that we use at NCG. Your daughter can access her mail account from anywhere. Google Apps is the online software that students use to create and collaborate. Again, this can be accessed from anywhere. Schools are working in a rapidly and frequently changing environment. This is both exciting and challenging, but also takes time. We ask that as we implement these changes and upgrade and develop our systems you bear with us and support what will finally become a very efficient and productive method of communication for all concerned. 3

4 MUSIC Photos: Bel Canto / Stella Nova at the Big Sing in Blenheim in June STELLA NOVA When we found out we qualified for the Finale it was quite surreal. Everyone was so proud that we had been classed as one of the top eight female choirs in the country, but immediately our minds also turned to rehearsing, fundraising, and most importantly - how were we going to avoid getting sick of each other? Rehearsals were scheduled for nearly every day of the week, as was a fundraising concert, bake sales, and busking, which all contributed to the necessary preparations that a National choir has to undertake. I admit that in the days leading up to Nationals, tensions were high as our leaving date loomed - early starts and late nights don t always make for a choir of angels. Fortunately though, all fears subsided as our trip kicked off. The sheer excitement of being in Auckland injected everyone with a new energy, and in that moment I think we were all hit with the reality of what an awesome achievement this whole trip really was. The initial energy then became a tidal wave of neverending positivity, because from that point on the trip was a smashing success. Our rooms were a real taste of Auckland. The 6th floor of the Amora Hotel, looking out straight across to the Skytower, was a wonderful luxury (courtesy of the Mr Payne s geat taste), and every morning we could bond over a buffet breakfast. Over the five days that we were in the big city we performed three times in the Auckland town hall, rehearsed in the Q Theatre for a number of hours, and spent what I m sure was hundreds of dollars at the underground foodcourt at the top of Queen Street. (Yeah, you all know the one. Burger King AND Pita Pit). The only time I think the smiles were wiped off our faces was the few seconds before we went on stage. Of course we were excited, but we were so incredibly nervous it was making everybody feel sick. As nervous as we were though, every performance was over in 10 minutes, and all the mornings and afternoons and evenings that we had dedicated to rehearsing had paid off. The applause from the audience when you finish a set really is what makes those hundreds of hours of rehearsal worth it. It never fails to amaze me after we perform, the idea that we are just a bunch of 36 girls, but with the direction and help of three amazing adults we can produce absolutely beautiful music, most of which I would never have been exposed to if it weren t for Stella Nova. Much to our delight, the judges felt the same way about our beautiful music because at the prizegiving of the Gala Concert on Saturday night, we came away with a bronze award, which was such an incredible achievement for us being the only choir there that were at the finale for the first time. I can t exactly pinpoint the moment that I knew this was a very special trip, but by the end of it there was no doubt about it. 4

5 Continued from previous page All praises must be sung to Miss Monopoli, Mr Payne, Mr Bathan, and Miyuki Jones, who all made sure we got to and from every destination with all limbs still attached, and acted as the four funkiest supervisors a school group could ask for. We had spent every meal together, shared nerves, laughter, tears, inside jokes, applause, hotel spas, secrets, and everything that ties us to our friends in a normal school day was out the window. There are no year groups in choir, just Sopranos and Altos. As well as that, we don t care what your first language is we always end up singing in Hungarian anyway. And if that wasn t enough, there is no prejudice to what you look like. Half of us come to rehearsal in pajamas and Miss Monopoli has pink hair. It is doesn t even compute with me anymore to call Miss Monopoli our director... I think mum is more fitting. Or as Ruby Bathan so fairly puts it, Fairy Godmother. I don t know if I ll ever experience another trip quite like the Big Sing National Finale 2014, but I do know one thing - we went into this as strangers, but we came out as sisters. And to all you cynics out there like me, I know it sounds ridiculous, but Stella Nova choir really is just a big, diverse, dysfunctional at times but definitely happy, family. Lucy Upton MID WINTER MUSIC On 12 August, NCG held our annual Mid-Winter Music Concert. The concert featured all of the school s music groups, from rock bands to concert bands, and even included a few exceptional soloists who were pre-concert entertainment. This has always been a highlight in the school calendar, but this year it was even more so. The concert opened with Te Rourou Kura, performing some of their beautifully rehearsed pieces from the national Kapa Haka festival held earlier in the term. Other highlights included the wonderful Jazz band who performed their winning set from the Nelson Jazz competition and the orchestra, which has grown in numbers and quality from last year. The NCG saxophones performed Stacey Jordan s original composition and another group doing the same was the Year 10 rock group. It is always lovely to watch the Prep choir sing and this year there were 75 in the group, including three lovely soloists. Bel Canto s rendition of Falling Slowly was a particularly touching moment and balanced nicely with the jovial sound of the brass group and flute salad. The senior choir Stella Nova, who had been invited to the NZCF Big Sing National Finale in Auckland for the first time ever, used this concert as an ideal time to put themselves to the test - having just nine days to go until the competition. We performed all five of our pieces in four different languages (all a capella), and it was an amazing feeling to finally perform them to friends, family and teachers after months of preparation and to realise what we could achieve. The concert this year also doubled as the main fundraiser for our trip, along with bake sales at school and busking in town. Travelling to Auckland definitely came at a cost - but the money we raised from ticket sales, raffles and nibbles raised $4008 on the night, to help with the cost of the trip. A huge thanks to everyone who came along to support us the parents, teachers and especially the performers, some of whom performed multiple times. 6 SPRING FASHION FLING WOW what a night we all had. This was held last weekend and was yet again a roaring success. A huge thank you must go to all those who supported the annual event. All other photos: Courtesy of Sandra Purves The Models were amazing and appeared to enjoy showing off all the latest in fashion from the eight shops that were participating. The models were students and teachers from college and two young lads from Nelson College. The Shops featuring their spring range included; Hogeys Surf, Beetees, Glassons, Profile, Kilt, The Rock Box, Barkers and VDesigns. Breffni O Rourke was the MC for the evening and did a great job of ensuring there was always something happening on stage. The hair was created by students at NMIT and the makeup was provided and done by the staff from the Body Shop. Students who offered to help but we couldn t use as models did a fantastic job as the Hogey s Crew and served the tables and sold paddles for the Big Spins. So many businesses and families get in behind this annual event, it is humbling to know that the support is out there. Once again a huge thank you to everyone who supported it in some way, your support is always appreciated. As this is going to print before we have all receipts etc in, it is difficult to say how much money was raised but the PTA are confident that in excess of $10,000 was raised. Some of the funds will go towards supporting the cost of the new school van, and we will also be able to consider purchasing other valuable resources that are requested by staff. Recently we approved the purchase of an AED Machine (Defribillator) which is considered an asset to the community. As it will be located in the college entrance it will not only be available to staff and students but also to the wider community. 6

7 SPORTS NEWS TASMAN SECONDARY SCHOOLS HOCKEY TOURNAMENT Our First XI hockey team had a taste of competition recently at the TSS tournament, a great warmup for their New Zealand Secondary Schools Winter Tournament Trip. The competition was tough but the girls made it in to the final against Waimea College. They had a spectacular first half scoring several goals in the first 10 minutes, unfortunately Waimea had an even stronger second half and came back to win the tournament with NCG a close second. Well played girls. Fiona also rode for a composite team alongside Marlborough Girls in the Teams Time Trial TASMAN SECONDARY SCHOOLS SKI AND SNOW COMPETITION Our teams had a great day at Rainbow Ski Field. After some initial doubt about the conditions the teams arrived to find great weather and plenty of fresh snow. Competitors completed two runs down a giant slalom course, with their times combined to give a total score. Lilli Wilkinson was the individual queen, beating skiers from Nayland and Waimea Colleges to take first place in the individual event. Our NCG Blue and Navy ski teams also dominated the competition winning first and second place respectively with Waimea College team coming in third. In the snowboarding section Addie Lowe took out first place for NCG with a huge lead over her competitor from Motueka High School. Congratulations to the girls and a big thanks to all the parents who were able to help out on the day. WINTER TOURNAMENT The big week is finally here! Our top teams from Netball, Basketball, Hockey, Football, and Underwater Hockey are travelling to various locations around New Zealand to compete in their respective NZ Secondary Schools National Championship tournaments. Thank you to all the parents, staff, coaches, managers, businesses, and community members who have helped and supported our teams so far this year. Best wishes and good luck to every single one of our players and teams, travel safely and play hard! CROQUET Hannah Brown in 9SU has been selected for the under 21 world Croquet Champs which will be held in early February BASKETBALL Our annual Basketball Exchange with Marlborough Girls College was a huge success. Held this year at Nelson College for Girls, Nayland College and Waimea College were also invited to compete for the Coaches Cup. Despite some very tight games, NCG Senior A Basketball came out on top and took the O Leary Van Velthooven Trophy away from it s old home in Marlborough. The coaches were thrilled with this outcome and are very happy with how the basketball team has been performing in the lead up to their South Island tournament kicking off September 3rd.. RUGBY Our Rugby season has now wrapped up with the final game against Motueka. A huge thank you to the coach and manager Cyril Collier and Linda Erasmus. We have really appreciated your support over the years, thank you for your fantastic contribution to Rugby at Nelson College for Girls. 7

8 NCG CAREERS AND FUTURE PATHWAYS TERM 3 DATES AND EVENTS 2015 Subject Selection has now been completed. As part of this process Year 10 and Year 11 students completed a Careers Unit in class, and Years 9 and 12 students had a Careers presentation about subject choice. If students indicated they would like an appointment with the Careers Advisor to discuss their subjects an appointment time will be scheduled for them. YEAR 13 STUDENTS UNIVERSITY INFORMATION Liaison Advisers from the Universities will be in school in Terms 3 and 4 (see dates below) to work with students on their course planning. It is essential that students attend the appropriate session for the university where they intend to enrol. Students must also check closing dates for applications (including Halls of Residence, Scholarships and Limited Entry courses). ENROLMENT AT A NEW ZEALAND UNIVERSITY ENTRY CRITERIA In addition to gaining University Entrance, most Universities have additional entry criteria. For specific information and detail, see the individual University websites or contact the Careers Department for advice. VOCATIONAL PATHWAYS A significant change in New Zealand secondary schools, particularly for senior students, is the introduction of Vocational Pathways. These are designed to help our students plan the courses they will follow to gain Level 2 NCEA and on to work or further training. This system shows students how credits are valued by industry and the types of study options and opportunities available to them. The pathways are flexible and enable students to change direction if necessary along the way. Our students can use the Vocational Pathways information to see how their skills and interests relate to industry and work opportunities. There are six pathways: Manufacturing and Technology, Construction and Infrastructure, Creative Industries, Primary Industries, Service Industries, Social and Community Services. In the next year, and beyond it will be useful for students when considering future work and training, to become familiar with these Vocational Pathways. 9 PROPERTY MATTERS INTRODUCING DUNCAN MACFARLANE GARDENER, NCG We asked Duncan ten questions to gain a better understanding of what he does here for us and what is involved in keeping a large school running as smoothly as possible. How long have you been in the role? I have been here for 5 months now with my first day on the job being the day after the worst storm to hit Nelson in 50 years. It was quite an introduction! Over the next 2 months we had two further worst in 50 years storms! What was your most recent role prior to this one? I have been a Farmer for 47 years. At age 22 I started managing a farm for 5 years I then purchased my own property and farmed that for 27 years- that was where my two daughters were born and brought up. What else have you done in your professional life? My passion, joy and love has been my involvement in shows and events. This includes such things as 14 WOW events, 10 years with the Nelson Arts festival, 13 New Years Eve concerts and a multitude of Theatre Royal shows. What are you responsible for at NCG? I m responsible for all the outdoor areas at the school and love seeing this majestic old place look like it is loved and cared for. The main focus each week is ensuring the school is looking smart, tidy and well presented- the same aim we have for our students! What are your five favourite things about working here? The people, the beauty of the grounds, the large number of trees we are blessed with having, keeping fit and supple, the fact I live only four houses away! What s your least favourite thing? Having to get out of bed on a cold frosty morning. What do you do in your spare time away from school? I love socialising, having friends round to the house which I am in the middle of renovating you can imagine how the rest of my time is spent now! What are your three goals for this year? To add colour, scent and beauty to the grounds. What is one thing most people will not know about you? I haven t watched TV for eight years, I have 1500 books and I love classical music Where did you go to school and what is your best memory of your time there? I spent nine years at Boarding schools- Hereworth Intermediate for four years and Wanganui Collegiate for five years. My best memory is the after lights out fridge safaris! 9

10 LEARNING RESOURCE HUB To celebrate National Poetry Day on 22 August, we held a Book Spine Poetry competition. The girls created short poems using just the spine titles from some of our books. 11 BUSINESS STUDIES BUSINESS IN ACTION: Our Year 12 Business Studies students had the experience of a real-life market on Saturday. They set up their stalls at Nelson market along with teams from other schools. The preparation leading up to the day was intense but the students really enjoyed process of making a sale. The standard of retailing was very high and one group from Nelson College for Girls (Wild Bee) gained second place for their product presentation and marketing skills (see the picture of Jess Price opposite). Well done to all. Robyn Bright ICAS SCIENCE EXAM 2014 RESULTS A total of 51 students took part in the exam this year. y One student received High Distinction for achieving in the top 1% of New Zealand y One student received Distinction for achieving in the next 10% of the country. This is running for the first time this year between 5 9 of September. Its purpose is to celebrate youth lead kiwi innovation and to spark action and growth in the generations that will be leading the future. The conference is composed of around 400 people coming together over relevant world issues and future thinking. There will be a variety of seminars and speakers each day including key note speeches by Dr Jan Owen, Andy Hamilton, Emeline Afeaki-Mafile o and Minne Baragwanath. Sophie and Hannah will have the opportunity to attend those which interest them the most. All scholarship recipients will be staying at the YHA a short walk from where the conference is taking place in central Auckland. This as a wonderful opportunity for both girls to widen their understanding of world issues, develop thinking skills for the future and meet inspiring people. We hope you both have a wonderful time and look forward to hearing about your adventures on your return. 11

This year we are producing the 114th Yearbook as a record of the main events and the people of We would love to see every student take home a copy at the end of the year. 15 THE PROJECT The Youth & Community Trust in association with Nelson Underage are proud to present The Project 2K14, the biggest U18 S dance event to hit the shores of Nelson and Blenheim in late September. Flying in an array of internationally recognized DJ s from the U18 s Event Scene in Australia, The Project will see a spectacular lineup built from international, national and local DJ s, featuring: Konvex (Sydney) Kids on the Block (Auckland) The Game Masters (Melbourne) Lucas Jory (Tauranga) + Support from local DJ s in Nelson & Blenheim to be announced soon. The programme is designed to provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to develop appropriate attitudes towards sexuality and to take care of their sexual health needs in the future. Parent consultation meetings showed strong support for this programme. We recognise that the family is the primary educator of children in matters to do with sexuality; therefore, if you wish to have your child excluded from any particular part of the programme you may apply to the Head of Health, Louise Smulian (louise.smulian@ncg.school.nz) in writing to request this. 17
