1 May, 2010 Patriot Newsletter Patrick Henry High School, 6702 Wandermere Drive, San Diego, CA Phone: Fax: Web: Dear Parents: This is the time of year we look forward to our seniors graduation, celebrate our students many achievements, and plan for summer school and the opening of the school year. I have good news about the Patrick Henry High School budget for next year. Instead of worrying about how we will pay for all the needed student supports, next year Patrick Henry High will qualify for federal Title I funds. This will bring an additional $178,000 to fund a number of educational services for our students, including our additional counselor, computer lab tech, and support classes in English and math for the High School Exit Exam. We will have enough funding to help support our band and all the supplies and books our classes and departments need. We are currently conducting our state testing of all grade 9-11 students, and I want to thank all of you for supporting our students efforts and achievement on these exams. We need to show every student is improving his/her performance on them. I am recognizing in this newsletter all the students in grade 11 in spring 2009 who earned an Advanced Level on at least one of the California Standards Tests. I also want to give a big thank you to Joe Ogilvie for his help in organizing all the tests and to our two volunteers who have donated a lot of time to help: Cathy Jaffe and Lisa Cantor. Your help is greatly appreciated. Summer School will take place as normal for D and F grade make up for grade 9-12 students. Summer School dates are June 28-August 6, and class will be held 7:30-11:40 a.m. daily. There will be no transportation, except for identified special education students. Please contact Terry Walsh to make sure your child is enrolled for credit make up. Incoming Grade 9 Summer Experience classes will be offered to new Patrick Henry High students to provide project-based activities to help prepare them for their high school education. This is a fun, hands-on, activity class tentatively taking place from June 28 July 16. Incoming freshmen are encouraged to sign up with Mrs. Schulze. I want to thank our seniors for their continued excellent citizenship. Please do not encourage and ditch days because they are unexcused and they cost our district valuable funds for every absence. Please encourage our seniors to celebrate at their senior activities and graduation on June 18. For your school year calendar, please post these important registration and Link Crew dates: New Student Enrollment August 24, 26, 31 and September 1 Grade 9 Registration August 25, 26 Grade 10 Registration August 27 Grade 11 Registration August 30 Grade 12 Registration August 31 Grade 9 Link Crew Orientation August 30 First Day of School September 7 Finally, I need to recognize some of our students outstanding achievements. 11 Patriot Newsletter Page 11 PATRICK HENRY TAKES HOME 3RD PLACE HONORS AT DISTRICT COMPETITION Jordan Robertson PAO Patrick Henry s award winning NJROTC Patriot Battalion hosted this year s San Diego Unified School District JROTC Youth Physical Fitness Competition. Fondly known as the Cadet Challenge, JROTC Units from twelve high schools within the District met to compete in the Patrick Henry High School Naval JROTC s Youth Physical Fitness Competition, or as it is more fondly known: The schools in attendance included Lincoln, Crawford, San Diego, Serra, Hoover, and Point Loma High Schools. The competition tested cadets on their athleticism according to the standards of the Presidential Fitness Exam. Each school fielded both a boys and girls team. All participants completed a series of events that included: sit-ups, push-ups, shuttle runs, and the basketball throw. In order to determine a winner the individual results of each cadet combined, thus producing individual team and school scores.

12 The Patrick Patriot Newsletter Page 12 Henry boy s team, included Seniors Anthony Lacey, Jacob Halladay, and Troy Leak, Junior Niko Rounds and Sophomore Michael Gould-Moberg. In the boy s push-up event, the Patriots placed third, racking up an amazing 307 team push-ups, while Morse High School took first with 357 push-ups. Sophomore Michael Gould-Moberg led the team with 69 push-ups and had this to say: "I really enjoyed how they (the events) were run; it really gave a better feeling of accomplishment to me and the other competitors." The shining moment for the Patriot boy s was the 2000 meter relay run, their superb effort, manifested in a team relay time of 5.16, securing them a first place in the event an as a result greatly contributed to their overall third place finish. The women s team, made up by Junior Yesenia Hernandez and Sophomores Marisol Villanueva, Kimberly Zaldivar, Adria Jones, and Michelle Aguilar. They too had an impressive showing matching the boys in their overall 3rd Place finish.. Marisol Villanueva contributed a team leading 52 push-ups to the team s total 165. The Patriot girls finished third in sit-ups with a team total of 351, outperforming their male counterparts. Kimberly Zaldivar led the team with 83 sit-ups. Michelle Aguilar s stellar throw of 15 yard 23 inches allowed the Patriots to come away second in the basketball throw event. In another shining moment, the Patriot girls took second place in their 2000 meter relay race with a time of With each team taking a third place trophies the Patriot Battalion was also able to capture the third place overall trophy for the entire competition. This success propels Patrick Henry within reaching distance of a Stillwell competition victory. Awarded at the Brigade s Annual Pass and Review. The Stillwell Trophy acknowledges the successful culmination of the entire year s competitions. Placing for the award is determined by a series of drill meets held and competed in throughout the year by the thirteen JROTC s that make up the local Brigade. Patrick Henry s has been moving up in the ranks and their third place Cadet Challenge finish leaves them currently in fourth place and within striking distance of the award. The final results are to be decided on May 1st when the Patriot Battalion participates in the final Drill Meet competition. Regardless of the results Patrick Henry Commanding Officer and Cadet Challenge team member, Troy Leak, is still proud of his cadets: I'm proud of the team and the individual effort they put forth. In the future, I know their efforts will pay off, as they take the competition to the national level. While I myself may be graduating, I have faith that the Patriots will go far with the momentum we've built this year. MSgt Bricke, Patrick Henry noted after the event that this was a great showcase for the students, it gives them an opportunity to see that the demanding PE activities they participate in during the school week do pay off I am so proud of them for taking home both individual and team honors and representing their school so well.
