A number of vacancies exist for If you would like to know more about how the school operates and have input into the directions and decisions we make for the school, then please consider becoming a member of our Governing Council. Nomination forms are available from the Front Office. As a member, you attend two evening meetings a term that go for approximately hours. If you wish to find out more about the role of the Council, please contact the school and we can give you the name of a council member to speak to. Governing Council has a number of sub-committees. These provide parents/carers with the opportunity to be involved in a specific area of the school. The committees are very important to our school s operation. Please consider joining one of these committees. You do not have to be a councillor to be involved. A list of the committees, and their roles, can be obtained from the Front Office. CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU Last week and this week our Reception - Yr. 5 students have been attending swimming lessons at the Elizabeth Aquadome. Our Year 7 students enjoyed two days of Aquatics on Monday and Tuesday at West Lakes while the Year 6 students were involved in a Leadership Tenting Day and the Amazing Race. Such events require a lot of organisation and commitment from staff and parents. Special thanks to the volunteers who assisted and all the staff for their flexibility to ensure students participate in these very important activities. Special thanks to Lorraine Davies who coordinated the R-5 Swimming and Aquatics Programs and all of our students and teachers who have made these events so successful and positive. Thanks also to Rebekah Brown and all of the Year 6 teachers who coordinated the Year 6 leadership days, and to our office staff who managed the extra workload of collating medical plans and receipting. A team effort. 2 AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS COMPETITIONS Students in Year 3 7 will again have the opportunity to compete in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) this year. Each competition challenges students knowledge and skills at their year level. Last year we had a number of students who participated and achieved excellent results in Digital Technologies, Science, Mathematics and English. Further information can be obtained at All students receive a certificate and an individual student report indicating which questions they answered correctly and their total score, as well as their average compared with the rest of the students in the state/region. Students wishing to participate in these competitions must return the relevant competition slip, which has been sent home with every Year 3-7 student today, together with $6.00 per competition (the school subsidises the extra cost) by Thursday 22nd March. Competition slips will also be available from the Payment Office next week RECEPTION ENROLMENTS If you have a student at Playford Primary School with a brother or sister who will be starting Reception in 2019 please complete an enrolment form as soon as possible if you haven t already done so. Enrolment forms are available from the Front Office. Forms returned must have your child s birth certificate attached. Kind Regards, Dean, Phillipa, Lorraine, Michelle and Matt ~ Playford Primary Leadership Team On Friday 23rd February Allysa, Taylah and Ashleigh competed in the SAPSASA District Swimming Carnival representing Playford Primary. The girls performed really well with Ashleigh coming 1st in four events, Allysa coming 2nd and 3rd in her events and Taylah coming 1st and 3rd in her events. Well done girls. Congratulations to Ashleigh and Taylah who have been selected to represent the District Team and will be swimming in the Metro Championships at Marion. Special thanks to LauraLee for transporting and supporting the girls at the competition. Our first fundraising meeting will be on Wednesday 21st March at 2.30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend so if you are interested in meeting other parents and helping the school at the same time, then please come along. Sign in at the Front Office and you will be directed to the location. We are looking for additional members so please consider joining this Committee. EASTER NEWS We are holding an Easter Raffle and we ask that the whole school community becomes involved by donating items to make up Easter baskets and selling a small book of tickets. Raffle books were sent home last week. Extra books are available from the Front Office. Can all donated items be taken to Student Services. Please return all raffle books (sold or not) by Monday 26th March. We will also be having a fundraising meeting on Monday 26th March to assemble the baskets in time for the lucky winners to collect them before Easter. The Raffle will be drawn at 10.00am on Wednesday 28th March. Good luck! PAGE 2

3 We had to look for certain things around the city while also doing a scavenger hunt. We had to find different landmarks and city attractions and answer questions about them. We visited Adelaide Oval, the Festival Centre, the Museum and Art Gallery, the War Memorial on North Terrace and the Central Markets (on Tuesday only) before meeting all the other groups for lunch at the Botanic Gardens. After lunch we looked around the Botanic Gardens, including the Rainforest area, before catching the bus back to school. We had to stay together as a group and work collaboratively to find the answers we needed. It was a fun day but we were all tired by the end of it! Thank you to Miss Brown for organising the event and to all the teachers, SSOs and parents that helped out. By Ameleiyah C02 On Monday and Tuesday the Year 6 students participated in an Amazing Race around the city. On the 5 th and 6 th of March the Year 7s went to Aquatics at West Lakes and had a blast. All students participated in surfing, sailing snorkeling, windsurfing, kayaking, double kayaking and canoeing. The Premier s Reading Challenge (PRC) is well underway with some of our avid readers already bringing completed forms to the library. Thanks to Ann and Geenaah for their fabulous artwork on the PRC display that matches this year s Book Week theme: Find Your Treasure. As the children finish the challenge, they will be adding gold and silver treasures to the display. With the changes in the library over the holidays we have noticed an increase in non-fiction borrowing by children who are interested in finding out more about their hobbies, favourite animals and ever popular computer gaming programs. Last year a small group of keen Anime and Manga fans helped us select a range of comic books for all ages from Shin Tokyo that have also proven to be incredibly popular. Graphic novels are one of our most sought after genres ranging from Marvel comics through to thrilling sci-fi fantasy for older readers. The library is open before and after school each day and you are welcome to come in to browse and read. Children are also able to return and borrow books at these times. PAGE 3

4 Students from E01 worked with Mr Tinsley to build new shelving for their classroom. They had to use teamwork, literacy and maths skills to be successful. Good job everyone. MATERIAL & SERVICES CHARGES (SCHOOL FEES) Families who finalised their school fees, or whose School Card applications were successful by Friday 16th February were placed in a draw to win a bike. Congratulations to Gabriella (D02) and Jett (E08) whose family were the lucky winners. Enjoy your new bike. Thank you to all our families who have finalised their fees, submitted a School Card Application or completed a Direct Debit form to date. Fees are due by tomorrow (Friday 9th March). Don t forget if you are eligible for School Card please lodge your school card form for 2018 as soon as possible. Applications can be completed online at: If you have any queries, or would like to discuss your fees, please don t hesitate to contact the Finance Officer. Student2student reading program 2018 Is your child in years 3 to 7 this year? Would they benefit from extra reading practice? Would they like their own buddy who is keen to listen to them read regularly? If so, student2student might be the right program for them. Student2student is a reading program run by The Smith Family. An older buddy is paired with a reader who could use a little extra reading support and they read to each other over a phone or digital device 2-3 times a week after school, for two terms. To apply for a place in the program, please complete the registration forms available through Rebekah Brown (Student Wellbeing Coordinator). A brief reading test will then be conducted with your child to check their eligibility. The program provides an opportunity for primary school aged children from Reception to Year 7 to receive up to a $50 discount on sports membership/registration fees.
