It has been another exceptionally busy year for the Early Years, Primary & Secondary phases with students achieving many successes both academically and personally. During Term 4 our secondary students have been involved in a wide range of activities and achieved many notable successes. Year 7 have been on a walking tour of Yangon and Year 9 visited U Thant s house. Art week saw some amazing collaborative work between our Year 10 IGCSE students and primary children at Bahan. Our Year 11 students have now completed their Cambridge IGCSE exams and we wish them every success for their results on Thursday 14 August by which time they will be a week into studying their Advanced Level Subjects. As we look forward to next year our Sixth Form opens on Thursday 09 August and we have a brand-new campus to look forward to in The project is now well underway as the site has been cleared ready for building to start. In order to ensure that our secondary students have the right accommodation until our move in 2020 we will be creating an additional ICT suite and four extra classrooms on our 7 Mile campus for August. Finally, Carole and I wish all students and parents a wonderful summer vacation and we look forward to seeing you in August. 2 Water Festival On the last day of Term 3 the secondary students participated in several water based activities in the afternoon to mark the start of the Thingyan holiday. The day was set up as a house competition and they competed individually within their houses and rotated around 4 stations. In activity 1 students had to throw a water balloon to each other and if it was successfully caught then the gap between them would increase. This would go through several rounds until only 1 team was left and declared the winner. In activity 2 students used big towels to catch water balloons and pass them down the field to each other in a team style relay. If the water balloon successfully arrived at the end they were awarded a point, the team with the most points won. Activities 3 and 4 were indoors but still had a water element to them. The first activity saw students carry traditional bowls on their head from one side of the basketball court to the other. Every time they successfully completed the course without dropping the bowl they were awarded a point. In the second activity they used teaspoons to collect water from a bucket and pass the water in a line through at least 10 other students using only teaspoons and then depositing it in a bucket on the other side. The most water collected by each team were declared the winner. Page 2

3 U14 MISAC Badminton Tournament Sports Events Network took part in this year s U14 MISAC Badminton tournament held at ISY. Every School in Yangon attended this event including major schools in Mandalay who travelled down for the weekend. The girls played extremely well with a special mention to Shwe Yee who won most of her matches in the singles division. As this was a team event, each individual who played contributed to the overall score for Network. The girls were unlucky not to finish on the podium but there was a massive improvement as the tournament progressed. The boys however managed to finish 2nd overall which was an impressive effort due to our opponents. Doubles duo Milan & Daris (year 6) were exceptional winning every match they played. In the singles division saw Andrew, Jimmy and star of the afternoon Julian finish in the top 2 of their competitions. It is great to see the popularity of badminton and the skill level grow this year at Network and I look forward to seeing future success with these players. Page 3

4 Sports Events On April the 7th our swimmers enjoyed a fantastic Saturday of competitive swimming. I am very impressed with the level of competition and quality all of our swimmers performed. A very special mention to our up and coming swimmer Ting Ting who was swimming in her category 3 years younger than her competitors. Also to Chein Chein and Ida who were young in their categories as well but also had sublime performances managing to secure podium finishes. Looking at these impressive times it is excited to see Network build on this and the future swimming team which is starting to look very strong. During which some students made it through to the next round which will be held in Kuala Lumper & Barcelona later this year. It was a wonderful, fun day that was challenging, especially to our debating skills. We made new friends, debated loads and took part in fun quizzes said one student who participated. The competition ran for two days, not finishing until the Thursday evening. We got to eat nice food with students from schools all over Yangon another student cheerfully commented. In all rounds and activities, from debating to collaborative writing competitions, Network students did their best and some won awards. Elizabeth (Year 8) received a gold medal for Writing and Jessica (Year 10) along with Joya (Year 8) were chosen as the Best Debater s and participated in a team debate in front of hundreds of students. Kate (Year 8) helped judge the competition. We wish them the best of luck in the next stage of the competition! Page 4

5 7A1 & 7A2 walking Tour The month of May has been an exciting one for making the History of Yangon come alive. Both year 7 and year 9 have been learning about important events and people through excursions and learning activities outside the classroom. On Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th the year 7 students took part in an educational walk of downtown Yangon. The students were lead through the streets by an expert who made the history of Yangon come alive through retelling the stories of some of the remarkable buildings that Yangon has to offer. The students listened intently and asked insightful questions throughout the morning. On return to school they created their very own historical guide to downtown Yangon and even produced questions that they found the answers to for the next years year 7 to complete. On Friday 18th the year 9s took a trip to U Thant's house. The 'forgotten hero' who was instrumental in mediation between the leaders of the US and the USSR during the Cuban missile crisis and is often not given enough accolade in the western history retelling of events. Joseph from 9A2 reflected in his feedback; 'As a citizen of this country I am proud of U Thant for what he achieved. He should be admired." When asked what was learnt from the trip Lorine from 9A1 stated that she learnt; "Promoting peace is important because it is important to encourage peace, kindness and love in the world." Page 5

6 Art Week It has been a wonderful week of creativity, versatility and collaboration at Network International School. We started the week with a doodle competition; students have practiced their sketching skills by creating a doodle a day during SSR time. Students in year 4 and 5 have experienced fun explorative activities working with year 10 Art and Design IGCSE students to create an eco-friendly mural. The mural was organized and designed by the Year 10 Art class and encouraged all students involved to work together, build confidence, consider how we can be more eco-friendly, and simply enjoy different forms of expression. Year 6 demonstrated great collaboration together to create a large copy of Vincent Van Gogh s famous A Starry Night piece. In groups students worked together to sketch and paint a small section of the artwork while using interesting mark making objects to recreate Vincent Van Gogh s style. Bright colours and creativity were key while learning how to paint in the same style as the artist. When all of the sections of the art work were finished each piece came together to reveal a completed 'A Starry Night'. Well done year 6! Art work from the students has been on show around school all week displaying a range of creative ideas, skillful techniques and originality. Page 6

11 Secondary Achievement Certificates At the start of Term 4 we presented our achievement certificates for Improved Effort & Homework, Outstanding Effort & Homework and the maximum score of 5 for Term 3. Congratulations to all students who received certificates. Page 11

12 Maths Awards We had our Mathematics Department Achievement Awards on 18 th May. This year we had forty five students achieving 85% or more overall score in their topic tests. We hope next year more students will receive this award. We are very pleased that these students have worked extremely hard to maintain their level throughout the year. Congratulations to them from all the teachers in the Mathematics Department. Page 12

14 Library Certificates Library Certificates were presented to students for Semester 2 (Terms 3 & 4). The certificates were given to volunteers to show the school's appreciation for their hard work and dedication and thank them for giving up their own personal time to volunteer in the library. Certificates were also presented as an 'Excellence Award'for those who have given up more time than expected, often going beyond their required duties and pushing initiatives forward to help improve the library. They have been outstanding in their role and the school wanted to recongnise that they had gone above and beyond the call of duty. Students Kate and Suyi, in particular worked the whole year in the library during Semester 1 & 2 which, is a fantastic commitment. A very big thank you to all of those involved! Page 14

15 Myanmar Essay & Handwriting Competition On Sunday 13 May 2018, two students from Year 7 entered the very first Myanmar Essay and Handwriting Competition, which was held at Dulwich College Star City Campus. The Essay & Handwriting Competition for both Myanmar and International students was aimed at sharpening their writing and handwriting skills. Over five International Schools in Yangon participated in the competition. Network students, Ting Ting & Thitsar took part in the Essay Competition, which lasted for an hour with additional activities such as Myanmar Traditional games and dances plus a General Knowledge Quiz on Myanmar. Thitsar won First Prize for the Quiz and gained full marks of 15 and also won second prize for the Myanmar Essay and handwriting competition. Overall, it was a great experience. Page 15

16 Y7 Au Café As part of their recent topic Year 7 students produced short drama pieces based in a French cafe. Students wrote their own scripts in French and some were quite creative and displayed a good grasp of vocabulary. The next lesson, the classroom became a stage and students performed their role plays enthusiastically. Some groups put in a fantastic effort producing props and costumes for the event. Page 16

17 MUSIC RECITAL On Thursday 31 May some of our Primary & Secondary students took part in Network s first ever Music Recital held at our Bahan Campus. The evening was a huge success with some of the students performing a solo on either the drums, guitar or piano together with others singing solo or as part of a small ensemble. Page 17

18 Year 11 Graduation Dinner On Thursday 08 June 2018 the Year 11 students celebrated their graduation with a dinner at the Novotel. Some of the staff joined in the Year 11 celebration dinner. Reminder to Parents Parents should not arrive before 14:30 to collect their son/daughter from 7 Mile. Uniform for Secondary & Sixth Forms Students can be purchased during the last week of the school summer holidays (w/c Monday 30 July). Fee payments for Secondary & Sixth Form Students can be made at the 7 Mile school office during the last week of the school summer holidays (w/c Monday 30 July). The daily school bus service from Bahan in August will run each day from the Bahan Campus up to 7 Mile. This service is for Year 7 students & siblings, starting in August. The bus will depart from Bahan at 07:15 each day and then return at 15:00 from 7 Mile at the end of the day to return to the Bahan campus. Page 18
