Laird Middle School family s mission is to nurture the diversity of each of our student s social, emotional, academic, and physical needs in a safe and caring environment. In partnership with home and community, we strive to develop independent, confident, and positive members. Inside this issue: A Message From The Principal October is a month that gives us time to be thankful. We have really appreciated the support and flexibility of our school community over the past month. September saw a lot of NEW. We really are grateful for all the community support we have! Thank you Lorelee Marin for donating school supplies! Thank you to our volunteers for the grade7 &8 fun days and the Terry Fox Run over the past few weeks. We have all begun to settle in and are finding our routines. Please take time to ask your child what they learned today, who they hung out with and what they did each day. We look forward to seeing you at our Student led conferences on October28th & 29th. The Library is more about learning than just reading. Reading leads to learning, but so does doing, creating, sharing, communicating, and Connecting. Challenge yourself to make better use of the Library this year. Take part in events and activities, like Lego Club, Game of Phones, Bingo for Books, and Education Week activities. Come in when you have free time in class or during a break or lunch hour, and use some of our products that aren t books, or that are books you can draw in, like our Lego bricks, Wacom drawing tablets, or one of our new coloring books. 3 Page 3 Mrs. Jones Notes from the Room September Was Great!!! The band year is off to an exciting start. The bands are working hard and sounding great for this point in the year! Concert/Trip Dates Please mark the following dates in your family calendar. Winter Concert December 2nd 2015 doors open at 6:30pm. Spring Concert-June 9th 2015 doors open at 6:30 pm. Practice Records September practice records are due. October Records are available in the band room. Grade 7 Retreat- was a smashing success! Thanks to all the students and parents who helped make this opportunity happen. Season of Savings Fundraiser- A big thank you to the band booster club for organizing our first fundraiser, and a huge thank you to all of the students who are working hard to sell those coupon books. Keep it up! Funds and unsold books need to be returned to Mrs. Jones by October 15 th. Sobey s Table- If you are interested in working the Seasons of Savings table at Sobeys over the next few weeks, please contact Bryan Watt bswatt@telus.net or call/text Bryan at Booster AGM- Thank you to all of the parents who came out for the band booster AGM! We appreciate all of your support! Jazz is in full swing (pun intended). Jazz I practices Tuesday from 4-5pm after school and Thursday at lunch 12:30-1:00pm. Jazz II practices Monday 8am-8:50 am and Fridays at Lunch 12:30-1:00pm. Concert Attire- a black collared shirt, black pants and black dress shoes. The school will supply a red tie. Grade 9 Concert has a Remembrance Day performance in November, so make sure you have your band uniform ready. You re going to look sharp Sabres! Inside Story Headline Gold - will run every Wednesday at E.S. Laird from 3: pm. Talk to Mrs. Jones for details if you re interested in joining but haven t signed up yet! Mrs. Jones Nifty Little Music Book -has been handed out to every student and should have been brought home to read through and sign. It s your student s first band assignment so If you haven t seen one, please check with your band student for their copy. Practice Tip- Begin with the end in mind: Have a goal for each practice session before you start playing. Just playing through your music isn't the same thing as practicing. Before you start, think: What do I want to accomplish today?
