1 Penn State University - University Park MATH 140 Instructor Syllabus, Calculus with Analytic Geometry I Fall 2010 There are two ways to live: you can live as if nothing is a miracle; you can live as if everything is a miracle. -Albert Einstein Instructor: David Koslicki Office: McAllister 013 Website: phone: Office hours: Monday and Tuesday 1:00-2:00 and by appointment Text: Calculus (Single Variable), Sixth Edition, OR Calculus, Sixth Edition by James Stewart, published by Thomson (Brooks/Cole) Note: An electronic version of the text is available for purchase per chapter through Evaluation: There are 450 points possible. The table below shows the breakdown for homework, midterms and the final exam. Course Component Homework (best 10 of 14) In Class Quizzes (best 7 of 10) Midterm I and Midterm II Comprehensive Final Exam Total Weight 10 Homeworks 3 points each = 30 points 7 In Class Quizzes 10 points each = 70 points = 200 points 150 points 450 points Notes and Policies: 1. Contact Info: The easiest way to reach me is via as I attempt to answer each received within 24 hours. Office hours are for your benefit and can be viewed as a free tutor service so I highly encourage you to stop by if you would like assistance with this course. 1

2 2. Exams: For information regarding the times, dates, and locations of the midterms and final exam, please consult the course syllabus found on Angel ( and my website ( as well as the schedule on the end of this syllabus. 3. Calculators will not be allowed on the exams or quizzes. 4. Homework will be posted on Angel and occasionally announced in class. The due dates are listed in the course schedule. The highest 10 assignments out of 14 total will count towards your final grade. It is highly encouraged to work through these homework problems and if there is any difficulty with them, do not hesitate to come by my office hours or ask in class. In addition, the homework problems I suggest should be considered a minimum and usually more problems are required to facilitate comprehension. An individual homework assignment is worth 3 points, 1 point for a minimally attempted assignment, 2 points for most problems attempted, 3 points for all problems attempted. No late homework will be accepted for any reason. Just to be clear, not for any reason at all. 5. Angel Quizzes are online multiple-choice quizzes that can be taken at your discretion. These quizzes will give you more familiarity with the style of the exam problems but will not count towards your grade. 6. In Class Quizzes will be given on the dates listed in the course schedule. These will be written quizzes to give you more familiarity with the written portion of the exams. The will be 10 quizzes, with the lowest 3 quizzes dropped. Each is worth 10 points per quiz. Being that I drop 3 quizzes, no late quizzes will be given for any reason whatsoever. I also reserve the right to conduct a pop-quiz if I see attendance dwindling. 7. Classroom attendance will not be monitored but to quote from the Office of the Registrar: Students are responsible for attending classes for which they are registered and are held responsible for all work covered in the course... A student whose irregular attendance causes him or her, in judgment of the instructor, to become deficient scholastically, may run the risk of receiving a failing grade or receiving a lower grade than the student might have secured had the student been in regular attendance. 8. Academic integrity is the pursuit of scholarly activity in an open, honest and responsible manner. Based on the University s Faculty Senate Policy 49-20, a range of academic sanctions may be taken against a student who engages in academic dishonesty. See the Eberly College of Science Academic Integrity homepage for procedures. 2
