Page 1 Parental Involvement Parents are teachers too! Parental involvement in a child s education is essential. Show how much you care by asking questions and setting up a homework schedule at home. 3 Encore Classes Table of Contents Encore classes, formally known as specials will be on a 4 day rotation. Students will have gym, music, art, and library. Day 1= Library Day 2= Music Day 3= Physical Education (Gym) Day 4= Art Be sure to have gym shoes on days we have gym, and library books will need to be returned on or before library days. If school is cancelled, the scheduled encore class for that day will then carry over to the next day that school is in session. This will ensure that all kids will get equal amounts of time for each encore class. 4 Welcome! Class List I am happy to welcome you and your child to my first grade classroom. I have prepared this handbook to help you understand my classroom routine and procedures. This will also make a good reference for you to use through the school year. My hope for this year is to help each child to do their best so that they can reach their fullest potential. I want to instill within each of my students a lifelong love of learning. I believe that through learning, each student can make his/her dreams come true. I am looking forward to working with you and your child. With your support and cooperation, I know this will be an exciting and rewarding year! 5 Birthdays Birthdays are very exciting and a special time for a child. Your child may bring a treat on his/her birthday. This is completely optional and not required. If the birthday is on a weekend, you may send treats on the preceding Friday or following Monday, whichever is most convenient for you. For children with summer birthdays, we will celebrate their 1/2 birthdays. On your child s birthday, a bag will be sent home with a book to read and return. Your child may also bring something in to share with the class. There will be a note in the bag explaining the Mrs. Klenke Personal Information Hello, my name is Mrs. Samantha Klenke. I graduated from Ball State University in 2011 with my bachelor s degree in Early Childhood Education (PK- 5) and Special Education Mild/Moderate (k-12). I am currently pursuing a M. Ed. In School Leadership with Miami University. This is my fifth year of teaching. I married my high school sweetheart, Cory, two years ago. We are excited to announce that we are expecting our first child this December. We have a German Shepherd named Cruzie. We live in Coldwater. Holiday Parties We will have classroom parties for Christmas and Valentine s Day. There will be a volunteer letter coming home to fill out and return. In the case that several parents are interested in helping out for a classroom party or event, I will randomly select the volunteers. Page 11 Page 4

6 Discipline Plan I believe that life-long success depends on self-discipline. I have developed a Classroom Discipline Plan that affords every student the opportunity to manage his or her own behavior and rewards. Our discipline system is linear, so students can move up or down as their behavior changes. All students will start on Ready to Learn (green). Students will earn punches on their behavior card that coordinates with where their clip lands at the end of the day. Pink = 4 punches = Super Student! Purple = 3 punches = Outstanding! Blue = 2 punches = Excellent Effort Green = 1 punch = Ready to Learn Yellow = No Punch= Make Better Choices = Warning Orange = No Punch = Teacher s Choice Red = No Punch = Parent Contact = Teacher s Choice Severe Instances = Immediate Removal from Class Consequences through teacher s choice will be punishments appropriate to the student and/or behavior. This may mean lose 5 minutes of recess or writing a letter of apology. Students will chart the color of where their clip landed on a behavior chart that will come home daily. This chart can be found in the zippy pouch of the HERO Binder. If a student ends the day on orange or red a behavior slip will be sent home. I ask it is signed and returned the following day. Once students earn 20 punches, they will be able to pick a reward from the Best Behavior Folder. Delay Schedules 2 Hour Delay School Begins at 10:35 a.m. All Dismissal Times stay the same. * No breakfast will be served on delay days! ** On 2 hour delay days, we will go to lunch at the same time. Morning Snack Each morning students will be permitted to eat a small snack. Students who choose to eat a snack will be asked to bring their own healthy snack that can be eaten in 5-10 minutes. You may send individually wrapped snacks or large bags/boxes that students can take a handful from each day. I will be understanding to those students who occasionally forget to bring their snack and may provide them with something small. However, I will not be providing snacks to any students on a daily basis. Page 5 Page 10

Your child will have a small amount of homework each night that will help them grow and progress academically throughout the year. Here are the few things that your child can practice each night: 1. Weekly Spelling Words 2. Word Wall (Fry) Cards 3. Addition/Subtraction Facts A homework assignment sheet will be printed on the back of the weekly newsletter. This will be housed in each student s HERO Binder. Please complete each night s homework and sign the assignment sheet. Students will receive a sticker for returning completed homework each day. The sticker is not redeemable unless the assignment sheet is signed by an adult. Students will not be punished for returning incomplete assignments. However, upon filling their sticker chart, students will be rewarded by choosing a prize of their choice from the prize box. Weekly homework is repetitious in hopes to make evenings less stressful for everyone. Monday through Thursday a half sheet of paper will be sent home. One side will emphasize language arts standards while the other side will focus on math standards. On Fridays, a workbook page from our GoMath! Workbooks. This is OPTION- AL! This is being sent home so that as a team, you may practice working on skills and problems we are working on in class. Your child s sticker chart will be unaffected by the incompletion of this workbook page. In a couple weeks, your child will be bringing home Baggie Books. These books will be at your child s individual and independent reading level. Students will be asked to take home and read two books per night. This will help them to progress as a new reader. A form will accompany these books. I ask that this form be completed and returned each day with the books. Students will exchange the books they have read for two new books each day. As their reading level changes, so will their book options. More information will be sent home about these books soon! Page 6

8 Data Binders/Assessments A standards-based report card will be used to assess your child s progress this year. The format of the report card will be very similar to what was used in Kindergarten. This was new for first grade last year and was a great success! Data Binders will also be used to track student growth. Students will be setting goals and tracking their own learning throughout the school year. These binders will be sent home from time to time. This will allow your child to share his or her growth with you. Work that comes home with TIC on it means that we have completed it Together In Class. If you ever have any questions about your child s work, please ask! H.E.R.O. BindeR A HERO Binder has been provided for your child. This will serve as means our main source of communication. This binder will go home each night and is expected to be returned to school each day. This binder is a great way to communicate and to Help Everyone Remain Organized. Your child will keep their take home papers, behavior chart, spelling list, homework, and other various things in this binder. The front of the binder is where your child will put his or her homework as well as anything else that needs returned to school. Any papers in the back are for you to keep at home. The notebook paper is there for you to write informational notes to me. I will respond on a daily basis. The zipper pouch will house your child s behavior chart, word cards, and lunch money (when sent to school). The weekly newsletter will be inserted behind the zipper pouch. The first sheet protector is reserved for your child s spelling list and homework chart.. The other sheet protector will be used to store Fry word lists. A Fry Word Book has also been sent home to start the year. Please let me know if you have any questions about the HERO Binder. ABSENCES Daily attendance at school is vital. However, if your child misses school due to illness or appointments, please call the school and notify us. You may leave a message day or night. Upon your child s return, please send a signed, written excuse explaining why your child was absent. This will prevent your child s absence from being marked unexcused. All work will be expected to be made up. When you call the school, please indicate how your child s missed work will be getting home. (Pick up by parents, sent home with a sibling, etc.) Page 7 Page 8
