1 General Information: Course Number MA40 Course Title Algebra II Instructor Mrs. Yasanayake Room 639 Phone (480) ALGEBRA II COURSE SYLLABUS WESTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL Office hours Tutoring hours 30 minutes before/after school if not at a meeting/conference Tuesday, Thursday 30 minutes before /after school Introduction: This course is designed for students who have successfully completed Geometry with a C or better. Geometric and algebraic concepts are extended and connected to topics in probability and statistics, trigonometry, and discrete mathematics. There is a focus on the development of students abilities to reason both numerically and spatially, to communicate and solve problems employing a wide variety of approaches, technology, and disciplines. The difficulty level of this course is above average. Cell phones will only be used for academic purposes under teacher direction. Technology Device Inspection Protocol: When students enter the class and collect their assigned device, the procedure is for all students to quickly inspect the device within the first 5 minutes of class to make sure that there is nothing wrong with the device. That would include logging into the machine to make sure that is operational. If in the first 5 minutes of class a student discovers a problem with the device, they should tell their teacher. If the student finds a problem with the device after the first 5 minutes of the class, then the assumption would be that the resulting problem is a result of the actions of the current student. Accountability and follow up for device use would then be done with the current student. Supplies: The following items will be used often during the Algebra II course: 1. Textbook: Algebra II Big Ideas for High School 2. Pencils, ink pens, markers or colored pencils, ear-buds to listen to videos. 3. Loose-leaf notebook paper is used for all written assignments. 4. A folder with pockets or a three-ring binder is used to keep course papers organized 5. Graph paper is required and used on a regular basis. 6. Calculator. A graphing Calculator (TI-84) is highly recommended. Check with the school rental program on a first-come-first-serve basis if financial assistance is needed. The WWHS Mathematics teachers believe calculators should be used to supplement, expand, and challenge a student s math experience. A calculator should be used as a tool, not as a crutch, and therefore does not replace the requirement to show work. Course Requirements: 1. Attendance Requirements. Regular attendance, note taking, and assignment completion are important to your success. It is absolutely critical that you attend class daily. Preparation for college demands that we work hard from bell to bell at all times. Students have one day to clear an unverified absence or the office/teacher will consider it unexcused per student handbook. Make-up of work missed through unexcused absences will not earn credit. If you are unable to come to
2 class because of an excused absence, then you may make up all assignments and tests for full credit. All work/tests must be made up within the same amount of days that you were absent plus one (per student handbook). It is your responsibility to make up and turn in the missed work in the correct amount of time. You are responsible to get the list of all assignments and notes. Per WHS policy, you are not excused from work missed if you are sent to sweep or ALC. It is your responsibility to find out what was missed in class that day and complete it on time as if you had been in class. 2. Math Help/Tutoring. Ask questions during class and seek additional help outside of class before an upcoming assessment. Do not wait until right before the quiz/test to decide to find help. I will be available for help during my office hours. You may also get additional help through the online Big Ideas Resources, canvas, school clubs, counseling dept., private tutors, and the after school tutoring programs. 3. Assignment/Notes. You must show all work and label the answers if necessary to earn full credit. Each problem must be completed to earn full credit for that assignment. If you do not understand a problem, please come in for help. All assignments are due the day after they are assigned. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to turn in the assignment upon return. It is your responsibility to get notes missed from an absence. Save all your notes throughout the whole year for the final exams. 4. Cheating will not be tolerated and you will receive a zero. If you have possession of another student s paper, both students will receive a zero. Do your own work to learn and get help when needed. 5. Tests/Quizzes. We will study about three units per quarter. There is at least one test and quiz per unit of study. If a student is swept on a quiz/test day, the quiz/test must be made up that day, or the student receives a zero. SWEEP DOES NOT POSTPONE DEADLINES/DUE DATES. 6. Progress Reports. In order to monitor student progress, grades are done online and can be checked as needed. The gradebook in Synergy is the official course gradebook. Canvas will record grades for individual tasks, but this is not the official grade. COURSE GRADING Quarter Grading Policy: Semester Grading Policy: Tests 50% Semester course grade 80% Quizzes 30% Final Exam 20% Assignments/notes 20% COURSE EXPECTATIONS I believe that the best decisions for managing student behavior are based on a value system that maintains the dignity of each student in all situations. Behaving responsibly and self-discipline are valued. In order to guarantee the student and their peers the learning climate they need for a good education, I advocate the following guidelines for student behavior: 1. Be prepared, in your seat, pencils sharpened, and ready to begin class as soon as the tardy bell rings. Always check the whiteboard/front screen for any additional instructions. When the devices are to be used shown by a colored green laminated sign, it is school policy that each student will: 2. Stay in your assigned seat. 3. Listen at all appropriate times. 4. Keep the classroom and desks clean.
3 5. Sunglasses/electronic devices are not to be worn in the classroom. They will be confiscated. 6. Adhere to all WHS standards/rules including those relating to food and drink in the classroom and dress code. Failure to act in an adult manner will result in the discipline procedure outlined in the student handbook. Attached is a receipt indicating that this syllabus was made available to parents and students in my Algebra II class. Students must read this document, discuss with me any information it presents that they do not readily understand, and present the syllabus to their parents for their inspection and signature as an assignment in this course.
