Lectures as well as other students will help translating the contents for the English speaking students For the English speaking students all exams will be oral and in English language Regular attendance and active participation are required to pass the course; students must not miss more than two classes in one course (particular regulations will be explained by the instructor at the beginning of the course) It is required to wear adequate sport clothes and proper shoes 1

3 Alpine Skiing Level: All 7-10 days The Alps For this intensive course the students will go on a trip to the Alps for approximately 7-10 days. Within the course the participants will get to know the diversity of (alpine) snow sports. The main objective of the course is to learn and improve basic technical skills of alpine skiing. The focus is on different techniques to initiate turns and keep control in turns. Students will learn to ski in flat as well as in moderately steep terrain. Additionally, the participants will experience alternative (alpine) winter sport devices on a selected day. Besides teaching the basic techniques, teaching concepts will be introduced and students will learn how to teach skiing and how to organize skitrips in school. The contents of this course refer to the snow sport curriculum of the German Association for ski instructors, the Swiss Snowsports, the SSBS and the Australian national association, which all obey a similar syllabus. Please note: Information and details will be explained in a preliminary meeting. The date will be published on the website of the IfSS. 3

4 Badminton Level: Advanced 90 min / week The objectives of the advanced badminton course are to learn and improve specific technical skills (low serve, high serve, underarm and overhead clear, smash, drop shot, backhand, net play, forehand and backhand drive) and advanced techniques (sidestep, scissors jump, Chinese jump smash) through a variety of exercises and games. The students should develop a specific playing ability and are going to work on their ability to demonstrate and explain the different techniques. Additionally, fundamentals of the sport badminton and game concepts, general tactical knowledge and tactical behavior in specific game-situations, e.g. game moves, tactics and playing positions regarding singles and doubles play and official rules and regulations of the game will be taught. Furthermore, the students will gain didactic knowledge about teaching methods, teaching principles and adequate exercises to enhance the learning process for different skills and enable them to teach badminton in school. At the end of the course, technical skills, demonstrational ability and playing ability in game situations will be tested in a practical examination. In addition, a written exam about the topics presented in the course will take place. 4

5 Basketball Level: Advanced 90 min / week The objectives of the advanced basketball course are to learn and improve specific technical skills (e.g. dribbling, shooting, etc.) through a variety of exercises and games. The students should develop a specific playing ability and are going to work on their ability to demonstrate and explain the different skills. Additionally, fundamentals of the game and game concepts, general tactical knowledge and tactical behavior in specific game-situations, e.g. game moves, individual and group tactical behavior in time-constrained situations and official rules and regulations of the game will be taught. Furthermore, the students will gain didactic knowledge about teaching methods, teaching principles and adequate exercises to enhance the learning process for different skills and enable them to teach basketball in school. It will be required to apply acquired knowledge by preparing lessons or parts of lesson in small groups and teaching fellow students. At the end of the course, technical skills, demonstrational ability and playing ability in game situations will be tested in a practical examination. Also, a written exam about the themes presented in the course will take place. 5

6 Dance 1 Level: Basic 90 min / week The basic dance course focuses on physical theatre and improvisation. The students will experience the possibilities and limits of their body and will discover their ability to improvise and their inherent creative potential. The content will primarily apply to different issues of education in creative dance: movement and expression, movement and improvisation, movement and presentation. Additionally, the course will enhance the student s ability to express themselves through movement. It will be required to prepare and present theoretical topics as well as to take over teaching of practical parts in selected lessons. At the end of the course the students will be showing a specified dance that will be practiced during the course and in additional training sessions as well as an own play, that they have to develop in small groups. This practical part and a written exam will be graded. Dance 2 Level: Advanced 90 min / week The main objective of this course are to work on improvisational skills and the ability to express oneself trough movements, to get to know different dance styles as well as enhancing the own creativity. Students will be learning specified movements and develop own variations, transform movements and work with different motifs. A variety of hand-held equipment, gymnastic equipment and other materials will be used in different dancing and gymnastic exercises. Various types of dance, dance-styles and areas will be introduced, and students will deal with different gymnastic styles. Students will get to know the basics of musical theory and will apply their knowledge in practical exercises. Based on the principles of the basic course, we will work on practical and theoretical topics such as: the history of dance and gymnastics, how gymnastics and dance relate to culture, to a person s gender, to sports, to art, to the body, to methods of learning, etc. It will be required to prepare and present theoretical topics as well as to take over teaching of practical parts in selected lessons. At the end of the course the students will be showing a specified dance (modern, hip hop) that will be practiced during the course and in additional training sessions as well as an own play, that they have to develop in small groups. This practical part and a written exam will be graded. 6

7 Golf Level: All 90 min / week Local golf course The objectives of the golf course are to introduce the basic techniques in golf (long and short drives, pitching, chipping and putting). The students are going to work on their ability to demonstrate the different skills. Additionally, the students should become familiar with the rules, etiquette, and course management. The students will gain didactic knowledge about how to teach golf. At the end of the course the participants will be able to play and abide by the rules of an official game of golf. Technical skills will be tested in a practical examination and a written exam will be graded. 7

8 Gymnastics 1 Level: Basic 90 min / week The objectives of the basic gymnastic course are to improve body coordination, expand the movement repertoire and learn and improve basic skills in different disciplines of gymnastics (e.g. floor gymnastics, vault, parallel bars, balance beam, rings, high bar) through a variety of exercises. The students are going to work on their ability to demonstrate and explain the different skills. Furthermore, the students will gain didactic knowledge about teaching methods and teaching principles to enhance the learning process for different skills and enable them to teach gymnastics in school. A variety of exercises for different learning groups and organization forms regarding assistance and safety aspects are going to be presented. Biomechanical principles, perceptual-motor processes and knowledge of human anatomy are going to be considered. It will be required to apply acquired knowledge by preparing lessons or parts of lesson in small groups and teaching fellow students. At the end of the course, technical skills in different disciplines of gymnastic as well as demonstrational ability will be tested in a practical examination. Also, a written or oral exam will take place. Gymnastics 2 Level: Advanced 90 min / week The objectives of the advanced gymnastic course are to improve body coordination, expand the movement repertoire further and improve and enhance the skills previously learned in the basic course. Also new and more complex skills in different disciplines of gymnastics (e.g. floor gymnastics, vault, parallel bars, balance beam, rings, and high bar) are going to be taught through a variety of exercises. Open tasks are going to promote creativity. The students are going to work on their ability to demonstrate and explain the different skills. Furthermore, the students will gain more didactic knowledge about teaching methods and teaching principles to enhance the learning process for the different skills taught in the course and enable them to teach advanced gymnastics in school. A variety of exercises for different learning groups and organization forms regarding assistance and safety aspects are going to be presented. Biomechanical principles, perceptual-motor processes and knowledge of human anatomy are going to be considered. It will be required to apply acquired knowledge by preparing lessons or parts of lesson in small groups and teaching fellow students.at the end of the course, technical skills in different disciplines of gymnastic as well as demonstrational ability will be tested in a practical examination. The students will have to present their skills in self-developed exercises. Also, an oral exam will take place. 8

9 Handball Level: Advanced 90 min / week The objectives of the advanced handball course are to learn and improve specific technical skills (e.g. dribbling, shooting, etc.) through a variety of exercises and games. The students should develop a specific playing ability and are going to work on their ability to demonstrate and explain the different skills. Additionally, fundamentals of the game and game concepts, general tactical knowledge and tactical behavior in specific game-situations, e.g. game moves, individual and group tactical behavior in time-constrained situations and official rules and regulations of the game will be taught. Furthermore, the students will gain didactic knowledge about teaching methods, teaching principles and adequate exercises to enhance the learning process for different skills and enable them to teach team handball in school. It will be required to apply acquired knowledge by preparing lessons or parts of lesson in small groups and teaching fellow students. At the end of the course, technical skills, demonstrational ability and playing ability in game situations will be tested in a practical examination. Also, a written exam about the themes presented in the course will take place. Handball Level: Intensive 90 min / week The intensive handball course recesses the contents of the advanced handball course. Specific technical skills will be worked on as well as tactical knowledge, playing ability, and demonstrational ability. Didactic knowledge on how to teach handball will be extended and students will practice their teaching skills by preparing lessons and teaching their fellow students. Please note: This is a follow-up course from the previous winter semester course. 9

10 Introduction to Racket Sports and Volleyball Level: Basic 90 min / week The objectives of the basic rebounding ball games course are to introduce badminton, table tennis, tennis and volleyball. For each sport, the students will learn basic technical skills through a variety of exercises and games. Additionally, game concepts and basic rules are going to be taught. This course focuses on teaching methods and teaching principles and shows various exercises to introduce racket sports and volleyball in school. At the end of the course, basic technical skills and playing ability for each sport will be tested in a practical examination. Also, a written exam will take place. Please note: This course only takes place in the winter semester. 10

11 Introduction to Target and Field Games Level: Basic 90 min / week Auehalle IfSS The objectives of the basic target and field games course are to get to know a variety of different ball-games for large groups such as school classes and to introduce basketball, handball and soccer. For each sport, the students will learn basic technical skills (e.g. dribbling, shooting, etc.) through a variety of exercises and games. Additionally, game concepts and basic rules are going to be taught. This course focuses on teaching methods and teaching principles and shows various exercises to introduce ball-games in school. At the end of the course, basic technical skills and playing ability for each sport will be tested in a practical examination. Also, a written exam will take place. Please note: This course only takes place in the winter semester. 11

12 Rock Climbing Level: All 90 min / week Local indoor climbing wall The objectives of the climbing course are to learn the basic skills for rock climbing walls and tightrope courses. The course is going to focus on different topics under the central perspective of cooperation and risk. The ability to cooperate, to take responsibility and to trust in others is a key aspect that students must develop in order to be successful at rock climbing and tightrope courses. The main topics of the course are going to be: didactic basics for teaching rock climbing in school, didactic methods, preparatory games and exercises, organization in class, differences between rock climbing walls and tight rope courses, safety aspects, rules and regulations and equipment for rock climbing. Please note: The topics of the seminar are closely related to the contents following article: Decree on the rules regarding visits to tightrope courses, rock climbing courses, rock climbing walls, and cable skiing with training classes. (HKM, March 17, 2009, article IV ). When the course is successfully completed, one can be awarded a certificate that is recognized by the Hessen school district / ZFS. 12

14 Soccer Level: Advanced 90 min / week Outdoor field IfSS The objectives of the advanced soccer course are to learn and improve specific technical skills (e.g. dribbling, kicking, goalkeeping, headers, throw-ins etc.) through a variety of exercises and games. The students should develop a specific playing ability and are going to work on their ability to demonstrate and explain the different skills. Additionally, fundamentals of the game and game concepts, general tactical knowledge and tactical behavior in specific game-situations, e.g. game moves, individual and group tactical behavior in timeconstrained situations and official rules and regulations of the game to improve the gamesense will be taught. Furthermore, the students will gain didactic knowledge about teaching methods, teaching principles and adequate exercises to enhance the learning process for different skills and enable them to teach soccer in school. It will be required to apply acquired knowledge by preparing lessons or parts of lesson in small groups and teaching fellow students. At the end of the course, technical skills, demonstrational ability and playing ability in game situations will be tested in a practical examination. Also, a written exam about the themes presented in the course will take place. Soccer Level: Intensive 90 min / week Outdoor field IfSS The intensive soccer course recesses the contents of the advanced soccer course. Specific technical skills will be worked on as well as tactical knowledge, playing ability, and demonstrational ability. Didactic knowledge on how to teach handball will be extended and students will practice their teaching skills by preparing lessons and teaching their fellow students. Topics of this course will be technical and tactical training, coordination training, teaching and training others and organizing lessons, video feedback and analysis, game movements and strategies, specific soccer training and training management, coeducation in soccer, prevention and rehabilitation and teaching concepts. 14

15 Swimming 1 Level: Basic 90 min / week Local swimming pool In the basic swimming course the students will experience the water as a medium in which one can move forward, float, sink and dive. The objectives of the basic swimming course are to learn the proper techniques of the four main swimming styles (breast stroke, front crawl, back crawl and butterfly stroke) and to train the swimming-specific endurance. Starts and turns in regards to competitive swimming will be taught as well. A variety of exercises, games and different floatation devices will be used to enhance the learning process. The students are going to work on their ability to demonstrate and explain the different skills. Furthermore, the students will gain didactic knowledge about teaching methods and teaching principles that will enable them to introduce swimming in school. It will be required to apply acquired knowledge by preparing training sessions in small groups and teaching fellow students. At the end of the course, the students will have to demonstrate the proper technique of the four swimming styles. This will be graded, as well as a sprint time for a long distance. Also, an oral or a written exam will take place. Swimming 2 Level: Advanced 90 min / week Local swimming pool The objectives of the advanced swimming course are to work on the performance in the four main swimming disciplines (breast stroke, front crawl, back crawl and butterfly stroke) and to train the swimming-specific endurance. Starts and turns in regards to competitive swimming will be repeated as well. A variety of exercises, games and different floatation devices will be used to enhance the learning process. Furthermore, the students will gain advanced didactic knowledge about teaching methods and teaching principles that will enable them to teach swimming to children and youths in different age groups and with different preconditions.. It will be required to apply acquired knowledge by preparing training sessions in small groups and teahing fellow students. At the end of the course, the students will have to show their demonstrational ability and advanced technical skills in the individual medley (combination of four swimming styles). This will be graded, as well as sprint times for 50 and 100 m. Also, an oral or a written exam will take place. 15

16 Table-Tennis Level: Advanced 90 min / week The objectives of the advanced table tennis course are to learn and improve specific technical skills such as the different stroke techniques, techniques pertaining to footwork and specific hitting techniques e.g. the counter and the topspin through a variety of exercises and games. The students should develop a specific playing ability and are going to work on their ability to demonstrate and explain the different skills. During the seminar, the participants are going to improve their technical skills as well as their specific knowledge about the sport. Additionally, fundamentals of the game and game concepts as well as official rules and regulations will be taught. Furthermore, the students will gain didactic knowledge about teaching methods, teaching principles and adequate exercises to enhance the learning process for different skills and enable them to teach table tennis in school. At the end of the course, technical skills, demonstrational ability and playing ability in game situations will be tested in a practical examination. Also, a written exam about the themes presented in the course will take place. It is recommended to bring an own table tennis racket (also called: table tennis paddle or bat) but it is not required for participating in the course. 16

17 Tennis Level: Advanced 90 min / week Local tennis club The objectives of the advanced tennis course are to learn and improve specific technical skills (forehand, backhand, volley, serve, etc.) through a variety of exercises and games. The students should develop a specific playing ability and are going to work on their ability to demonstrate and explain the different skills. During the seminar, the participants are going to improve their technical skills as well as their specific knowledge about the sport. Additionally, fundamentals of the game and game concepts as well as official rules and regulations will be taught. Furthermore, the students will get to know teaching principles and a variety of exercises to enhance the learning process for different skills and enable them to introduce and teach tennis in school. At the end of the course, technical skills and playing ability in game situations will be tested in a practical examination. Also, a written exam about the themes presented in the course will take place. It is recommended to bring an own tennis racket but it is not required for participating in the course. 17

18 Track and Field 1 Level: Basic 90 min / week Stadium, next to IfSS The objectives of the basic track and field course are to learn and improve basic running, jumping and throwing skills in the different disciplines (e.g. long jump, high jump, pole vault, hurdles, shot put and javelin) through a variety of exercises. The students are going to work on their ability to demonstrate and explain the different skills. Furthermore, the students will gain didactic knowledge about teaching methods, teaching principles, different exercises and will get to know a variety of equipment to enhance the learning process for different skills and enable them to teach track and field in school. It will be required to apply acquired knowledge by preparing lessons or parts of lesson in small groups and teaching fellow students. At the end of the course, technical skills in different disciplines will be tested in a practical examination. Also, a written assignment will be graded. Track and Field 2 Level: Advanced 90 min / week Stadium, next to IfSS The objectives of the advanced track and field course are to improve the previously learned skills in the different disciplines (e.g. long jump, high jump, pole vault, hurdles, shot put and javelin) through a variety of exercises. The students are going to work on their ability to demonstrate and explain the different skills. Furthermore, the students will gain further didactic knowledge about teaching and training methods, teaching principles, different and more complex exercises to enhance the learning process for different skills and enable them to teach track and field in school with children and youths of different age groups and with heterogeneous preconditions. It will be required to apply acquired knowledge by preparing lessons or parts of lesson in small groups and teaching fellow students. At the end of the course, technical skills in different disciplines as well as performance in a competition-like situation will be tested in a practical examination. Also, a written assignment will be graded. Track and Field for Elementary School Teachers Level: Advanced 90 min / week Stadium, next to IfSS This course is especially for future elementary school teachers. It will focus on the basic principles of the technical skills pertaining to running, jumping, and throwing. The students will gain didactic knowledge about teaching methods, teaching principles, organization forms, fun games, various exercises and the use of different materials and equipment to enhance the learning process of primary school children. It will be required to apply acquired knowledge by preparing lessons or parts of lesson in small groups and teaching fellow students. At the end of the course, technical skills in different disciplines be tested in a practical examination. Also, a written assignment will be graded. 18

19 Volleyball Level: Advanced 90 min / week The objectives of the advanced volleyball course are to learn and improve specific technical skills (e.g. serving, digging, passing, etc.) through a variety of exercises and games. The students should develop a specific playing ability and are going to work on their ability to demonstrate and explain the different skills. Additionally, fundamentals of the game and game concepts, general tactical knowledge and tactical behavior and moves in specific game-situations and official rules and regulations of the game will be taught. Topics of sports medicine and biomechanical principles will be brought up in the course to improve the student s background knowledge. Furthermore, the students will gain didactic knowledge about teaching methods, teaching principles and adequate exercises to enhance the learning process for different skills and enable them to teach volleyball in school. It will be required to apply acquired knowledge by preparing lessons or parts of lesson in small groups and teaching fellow students. At the end of the course, technical skills, demonstrational ability and playing ability in game situations will be tested in a practical examination. Also, a written exam or an oral colloquium about the themes presented in the course will take place. Volleyball Level: Intensive 90 min / week The intensive volleyball course recesses the contents of the advanced volleyball course. Specific technical skills will be worked on as well as tactical knowledge, playing ability, and demonstrational ability. Didactic knowledge on how to teach volleyball will be extended and students will be required to practice their teaching skills by preparing lessons and teaching their fellow students. The following theoretical and practical contents will be covered: The didactic methods for teaching volleyball in order to educate others in schools and clubs, the preparation and implementation of the current educational models for schools, techniques and tactics and how they coincide with theory and practice, the basics in educating children and juveniles in volleyball, the basic rules and refereeing. 19

20 Windsurfing Level: All 5-7 days Baltic Sea For this intensive course the students will spend 5-7 days in a camp at the Baltic Sea and are going to learn how to surf. In and around the water, professional surf instructors from the camp and trained instructors from the IfSS are going to teach the basic skills as well as connected topics such as physical forces (wind and water), safety aspects and organization and teacher behavior when planning a windsurfing-trip with a school. It will be required that students prepare and present topics in small groups and that they help organizing the trip. Please note: Students that pass the practical and theoretical examination at the end of the course receive the VDWS International Basic Licence for Windsurfing. 20
