1 Department of Philosophy & IDS & Physical Education Prospectus Introduction The Department cherishes the rare distinction of being not only the oldest Postgraduate Department of GC University, Lahore, but also of being the Alma Mater of Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal, the poet philosopher of Pakistan. Since its inception in 868, eminent thinkers and teachers like Thomas Arnold, Dr. Muhammad lqbal, S. G. Brett, L.P. Saunders and G. N. Chatterji have been contributing to its academic development. During its long history, the Department has continued to be one of the most important centers of philosophical learning in South Asia, especially noted for the promotion of the spirit of free inquiry and critical thinking. The department has made significant contribution to the promotion of liberal values in the University. Keeping in view the demands of changing times the Department has been renamed as Philosophy and Interdisciplinary Studies, since it vows to develop an interdisciplinary space for Philosophy in the academic arena through innovative and interactive teaching. The department strives to create an academic environment which could promote learning to philosophize and actuate intellectual skills to employ contemporary philosophical models for the cultural re-orientation of Philosophy in Pakistani society. To explore new job opportunities for the Philosophy graduates is also one of the topmost priorities of the Department. Academic Programmes The Department is offering following two programmes: l BA (Hons) l MPhil Many new courses and revised syllabi have been introduced at BA (Hons.) level, in the light of contemporary vision of Philosophy, not only as theoretical wisdom but also as the most powerful interdisciplinary discourse and explanatory practice. Similarly the department is offering a number of new interdisciplinary courses in BA/BSc (Hons) programme to broaden their vision and inculcate philosophical insight in their respective areas of study. The Department has the honour to introduce distinctive and exclusive courses in M.Phil, being offered by no other institution of higher learning in Pakistan. The Department intends to launch its PhD Programme by 206. Research Groups / Research Strengths The Department of Philosophy & Interdisciplinary Studies has a strong practice of quality research since its inception in 868. The Department is proud of its luminaries and celebrities. Even today the Department is carrying forward this practice with vigour and enthusiasm. Currently following four groups are busy with the diversified research activities: l Philosophy of Art l Feminism l Ethics l Contemporary Muslim Thought The Department has requisite human and material resources to conduct and guide quality research. The research papers of the faculty are finding place in the reputed national and international journals. Facilities The Department possesses basic requirements for quality teaching and research. At present, it has computers, multimedia, printers and internet connection. However, its real strength lies in the rich collection of latest books and journals available at Central and Postgraduate Libraries. Department has established its own Departmental Library as well on the occasion of 50th Anniversary of. A number of scholars have contributed rare books and manuscripts therein. Special Features The Department has following special features: Brett Philosophical Society The oldest Society of the University provides the students and the staff with a platform for active and regular philosophical dialogue on contemporary issues. Research Journal Quest, the research journal of the Department of Philosophy & Interdisciplinary Studies regularly publishes the research articles of reputed national and international scholars.

4 55 Prospectus 206 Department of Philosophy & IDS & Physical Education Department of Physical Education The Department of Physical Education was established in 202 and has been working under the umbrella of Department of Philosophy and Interdisciplinary Studies. The Department of Physical Education provides students with knowledge and experience to pursue numerous careers in physical education (e.g., sports management, fitness/wellness management, movement science, outdoor dealership, physical therapy, coaching, and athletic development). It promotes the potential for lifelong participation in the physical activities through the development of motor skills and movement competence, healthrelated physical fitness and sports education. In addition, students will gain an appreciation of the disciplinary knowledge and its application to various physical activity-related professions. The programme provides students with diverse environment and applied experiences. The objective is to prepare undergraduates in the field of physical education with the skills, knowledge, and experience to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyle. Academic Programmes The Department is offering the following courses: l MSc Physical Education & Sports Science l Health and Sports as an interdsciplinary course of one Semester of BA (Hons.) l Health & Physical Education at Intermediate level Facilities The Department possesses all the basic requirements for quality teaching. At present, it has sports facilities like Football, Hockey & Cricket grounds, Basketball, Badminton, Squash, Volleyball, Handball, Tennis Courts and Fitness Gym separate for males and females. For practical work the computers, internet and printing facilities are also available in the campus. Rich collections of latest books are accessible at the central and post graduate library. Ravians' Health and Sports Society The newly formed Ravians' Health and Sports Society to promotes physical fitness and emotional well-being amongst the students and the faculty. Its office bearers took charge in December, 20. RHSS is organizing various events to promote Health & Physical Education. Career Due to their highly professional and scientific training, the students in Physical Education & Sports Science may perform exceptionally well in various fields of life. Sports have a large job market in Public and Private Sectors; demand of qualified sports personnel is increasing day by day.
