2 2 General Information Experience the Benefits! The Community Recreation Department wants you to experience the benefits of its summer recreation programs. Learn skills, build self-esteem, make new friends, combat stress, improve health through physical activity, and best of all..have something FUN to do! Studies have shown that active people are less prone to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and even depression. Recreation is a low cost health insurance policy with fun and enjoyment as an added benefit. Don t forget to check out the Summer Adventures Program! The group meets 4 to 6 times per year with meetings scheduled during the lunch hour. 3 How To Register! 3 First, read thru the catalog and decide what programs you would like. Second, decide how you would like to register. You have several options: 1 Register ONLINE Online registration will open at 6 am on WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17. Go to and click on Online Registration. There is a convenience fee to use this service. Payment is either VISA or Mastercard. A login ID and pin are needed for online registration. If you have registered online in the past you are ready to go! If you do not have your login ID and pin you may obtain this information by either: 1. Going to Online Registration on our website and requesting an account (when creating an account be sure to add all members of your family, especially children you want to register for a course.) 2. If you have already given us your address in the past you may go to "Retrieve Login Information" to have your login ID and pin sent to you via Or call the Rec. Dept. at Don't wait until April 17 - request your account information in advance so you are ready to go on April 17! Online Registration - What does this mean for you? Up-to-Date Anytime Quick Timely Private Secure Review number of class openings in all activities with code numbers. Even if you choose to not register online, you can still use the system to check for class availability. Register from your home or the office, around the clock, seven days a week Avoid waiting for mail to be processed. Receive confirmations if desired. Access your secure account details, family schedule, and historical receipts, even if you have not registered online you can still access your family registrations and history. Safe online payments with Visa or Mastercard 2 Register by Mail Register by Fax Register by Drop-Off Registrations may be mailed in, faxed, or dropped off prior to 5 pm on Tuesday, April 16, but will be held and randomly processed beginning Wednesday, April 17. Fill out form on page 4. Complete information on the registration form (along with an alternate choice(s) for each activity in case your first choice is full). The Sheboygan Area School District Community Recreation Department does not provide nor cover any medical or hospital insurance for participants in our programs. 5 Registration Information & Policies 5 REGISTRATION REMINDERS - Registration Form on page 4... Register online at - see details on page 3... zz zz zz zz zz zz zz The registration form on page 4 is to be used for programs with CODE numbers only. Other listed programs may require separate registration forms available at the Community Recreation Dept. Mark your calendars and save this brochure! Keep track of your selections. No class confirmations are given for mail in, drop off or fax registrations. No news is good news! If you do not hear from us you can assume you are enrolled in the class. We will call you if you receive your 2nd choice or if the class is full. Confirmations for registrations will be sent out only when a selfaddressed, stamped envelope is provided. Be sure to send the correct program fee. If you are a non-resident of the Sheboygan Area School District, please pay correct fee. UPDATE - Residents of the Sheboygan Area School District residing in the Towns of Cleveland, Centerville & Mosel add $3.00 to the resident fee. However the total fee shall not be higher than the non-resident fee. The Community Recreation Department adheres to age limits. Participants should be the stated age by the first day of class. If registering by mail, participants from different families who wish to be in the same class should put their separate registration forms in the same envelope. Please feel free to duplicate the registration form on page 4 if needed. 3 CATALOGS PER YEAR: The Recreation Department publishes 3 catalogs per year. The Fall catalog and Winter/Spring catalog are mailed to all Sheboygan Area School District Recreation Tax residents. The Fall catalog is mailed in early August, while Winter/Spring catalog is mailed in early December. The Summer catalog is distributed in all public and private elementary schools. Catalogs are available at the Community Recreation Department office, all Sheboygan public and private schools and Mead Public Library. See page 8 for Subscription Service. WEATHER CANCELLATIONS: Several options are in place for notification In the event of bad weather: 1. Sign up for the Rec Dept Twitter account - see page 8 for details. 2. Call the Rec. Dept. Weather Cancellation Line, Check the website at NO SMOKING/ALCOHOL POLICY: A REMINDER TO ALL REC. DEPT. PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS: The use of all tobacco products or drinking of alcoholic beverages on premises owned by the Sheboygan Area School District is prohibited by state law. Your cooperation in upholding this law is necessary. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: If fees are an issue the Sheboygan Area School District provides assistance to those eligible for the Free or Reduced Hot Lunch program. Simply show your current letter stating your Free or Reduced Lunch status to receive a discount on classes. Contact the Community Recreation Department for further information. ACCIDENT INSURANCE: The Community Recreation Department does not provide accident insurance for participants. Participants must assume full responsibility for injuries incurred while taking part in any activity. REFUND POLICY: 1. Classes cancelled by Community Recreation Department will be fully refunded. Online registrations will not receive a refund for the convenience fee. 2. If you drop out of a program before it begins, you will receive a full refund minus $2 service fee. 3. f you drop out prior to the second half of a program, you will receive a 50% refund minus $2 service fee. 4. No refund will be given after the start of the second half of programs. 5. There will be no refunds for sports team fees. 6. Refunds for classes may be left on account for future class registrations. RESIDENTS 65 YEARS AND OVER: Activity fees are listed throughout the brochure. Sheboygan Area School District Residents 65 years and over may receive a 15% discount for most programs. See individual courses for details. CLASS SIZES: All programs have a minimum/maximum enrollment number. If we do not meet our minimum requirement, classes will be cancelled with refunds issued or you may transfer to a different class. If a program is full, you will be notified and, upon request, be put on a waiting list where in the event of a cancellation or new class creation you will be notified, or you will be issued a full refund or credit. RESIDENT/NON-RESIDENT FEE POLICY: A resident is any individual whose primary residence is in the Sheboygan Area School Recreation Tax District (City of Sheboygan and those areas in the Towns of Wilson and Sheboygan in the Sheboygan Area School District). Individuals residing in these areas support Community Recreation programs through their recreation tax. School District residents of Mosel, Centerville & Cleveland do not pay a Recreation Tax and therefore are charged an additional $3.00 above the resident rate. All other individuals pay the non-resident fee. See specific program for registration costs. PHOTOGRAPHY POLICY: The Community Recreation Department occasionally uses photos of participants for promotional purposes. By registering for the program, you have granted us permission to use your photograph for promotional purposes unless otherwise noted. The Sheboygan Area School District does not discriminate on the basis of age, handicap, marital or parental status, national origin, pregnancy, race, religion, sex or sexual orientation. SUPERVISION/PICKUP NOTICE: The Community Recreation Department Instructors and Staff are not responsible for supervision of youth program participants after a program is finished. For the safety of your child/ren, please make arrangements for prompt pickup from all Recreation sponsored activities, lessons or programs. 6 6 Aquatic Instruction Info Things to Know about our Aquatic Programs See Page 3 & 4 for How to Register. Everyone who enters the pool must take a thorough shower before class Children should use the bathroom before class The Community Recreation Department is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please bring a lock. James Madison pool is reserved for children 7 years of age or younger. Children 8 years and above need to go to Central, South High or North High. The shallow end at North and South is the same depth as Central. Parents are responsible for their own children before, during and after swimming lessons. Summer swim lessons are free as they are considered part of Summer School. Swim Classes that are offered: Parent & Child 6 months to 4 years - Parents are with their children the whole time playing games and introducing water skills. Swim diapers are required for all children who are not toilet trained. Parent/Child classes for Ages 6-18 months and months will be charged a fee. I Can Do It! - Parents are with their child for the first half of class then separated for independence. *Please Note: if your child is unable to stand unassisted you may be asked to stay with them for all the classes.* Step 1 - Basic adjustment skills, floats and breath control are worked on. Step 2 - Develops flutter kick, free floating front and back and front crawl are introduced. Pre Madison - For the child age 7 & under who may not be ready for a larger pool. All Step 3 skills are introduced, except diving. Step 3 - Coordinated rhythmic breathing for front crawl, back crawl butterfly kick and diving. Step 4 - Perfects both front and back crawls, elementary back stroke and breast stroke kick. Added endurance on all strokes and standing dives Step 5 - Refines all strokes and flip turns are added. More endurance and surface dives. Step 6 - Personal safety, a review of all strokes plus safety around the water. Fundamentals of Diving - Learn all the dives from starter to board. Do you or your child have any special needs? We can help you master a skill, provide training tips or overcome any fears you may have with water. Caring, patient instructors will provide 30 minute private or semi-private lessons at James Madison Pool. Fee per 30 minute lesson: $15 per person Please contact Geri at to arrange private lessons. POOL PARTY RENTAL Make swimming part of your child's next birthday party. Pools can be rented by the hour with guards provided, leaving you with time to watch and enjoy with your child or prepare for the treats after the swim time. JAMES MADISON POOL Availability is Fridays between 11 am and 3 pm. Pool capacity is 24. There must be at least one adult in the water with every 10 children for supervision purposes (other than the lifeguard). The cafeteria at James Madison is also availble to rent for serving food and/or playing games. CENTRAL POOL Availability is Fridays. Pool capacity is 50. There must be at least one adult in the water with every 15 children for supervision purposes (other than the lifeguard). SPECIAL NOTE: No pool parties will be scheduled on July 5. Cost: $45 per hour for the pool. The multi-purpose room at James Madison may be rented for $10 per hour, depending upon availability. Payment required upon making reservation. Prices higher on weekends/some evenings. Stop in at the Recreation Department to make a reservation, or call with questions. Report Vandalism or Suspicious Activity Please report vandalism or any suspicious activity to School and Recreation Program sites to the Sheboygan Police Department Your assistance in this regard is greatly appreciated! School Building Availability Your school facilities are available for private group use. Cafeterias, classrooms, gymnasiums and pools may be rented. Some restrictions may apply. Call the Community Recreation Department at for details. The Sheboygan Community Recreation Department has Twitter! Rec Dept Catalog Subscription The Recreation Department publishes 3 catalogs per year. The Fall and Winter/Spring catalogs are mailed to all Sheboygan Area School District Recreation Tax residents. The summer catalog is distributed in Sheboygan elementary schools. As a service to our non-resident customers and anyone else who wishes to receive all 3 catalogs, we have this subscription service. For a fee of $5.00 to cover postage, we will mail a catalog to your home 3 times per year for 2 years. Code 5385 The catalog is also always available on the Rec.
