The ACE Program (Afterschool Classroom Enrichment) is a program sponsored by IPSF (Irvine Public Schools Foundation) in cooperation with the Irvine Unified School District. These classes are offered right after school hours on the Turtle Rock campus for nominal fees. IPSF selects contractors who teach all types of classes ranging from athletics to academics to arts. 2 Register Online October 26 - November 4 Online Registration ONLY at MONDAYS: November 6, 13, 27, December 4, 11, 18 & January 8 NO class November 20, December 25, January 1 & 15 ABACUS MATH $162 This class is designed to introduce your student to the basic concepts of Abacus. The student will build a solid foundation in arithmetic as well as develop skills of problem-solving, analytical thinking and creative thinking. All classes are conducted in small groups (ratio 8 students:1 instructor) with individualized attention. Provider: Aloha Mind Math. Grades: 1-3 Mon. Time: 1:45-2:45 p.m. Location: Room 29 # of Meetings: 7 YOUNG EINSTEINS: STEM LAB SQUARED² $177 In this follow-up to our popular Young Einstein s: STEM Lab Course, students will continue their journey of discovery into the exciting world of STEM! Our young scientists will explore all sorts of new experiments as they discover engineering by building and battling LEGO motorized jousters and racing custom LEGO cars, learn all about the wonders of water and even how to make it defy-gravity. Create a cloud in a bottle, giant bouncy bubbles that you can hold in your hand and even make magnetic slime. Each experiment will provide fantastic opportunities for learning and fun. It's an exciting format for learning tennis, designed to bring kids into the game by utilizing specialized equipment, shorter court dimensions and modified scoring. It's the fast, fun way to get kids into tennis and keep them playing. Designed for the beginner and intermediate student; past students welcome. All equipment is provided. Fit Kids leaders make fitness fun, to help kids start loving fitness at an early age. Provider: Fit Kids America. Grades: 1-3 Mon. Time: 1:45-2:45 p.m. Location: Upper Courts # of Meetings: 7 SOCCER $157 Our classes are designed to help students enjoy and love soccer, all while working on their fitness. Classes are taught by experienced coaches who know how to teach skills in a fun and appropriately challenging way. During this one-hour class, players will learn the following skills: kicking, dribbling, goalkeeping, passing and ball control. There will be drills where the instructor teaches and/or improves individual skills and then scrimmages where players put those skills to use. This soccer class will be fun and is designed for students of any grade and skill level. Students are welcome to wear shin guards and soccer shoes with rubber cleats (metal are not allowed), but these are not required. Provider: Fit Kids America. Grades: 4-6 Mon. 3 TUESDAYS: November 7, 14, 28, December 5, 12, 19, January 9 & 16 NO class November 21, December 26 & January 2 CLAYMATION - STOP MOTION MOVIE MAKING $165 Have you ever wanted to make your own movie like "Box Trolls", or Wallace & Gromit? Then join this exciting class where students will storyboard their idea, then design, create and animate their own clay character. The process starts with building an armature or Skeleton for the character. Then all layers of clay are applied until the character is ready for the camera. Students will utilize ipods to make their characters come to life. After the filming is complete, they will choose their music and supply the voice-over. All projects will be available to view and download online. All equipment provided. Provider: Movies By Kids. Grades: 1-3 Tue. Time: 1:45-2:45 p.m. Location: Room 29 # of Meetings: 8 CARTOONING FUN! $147 Why do we keep offering cartooning at Turtle Rock? Because this class rocks and it is different every time!! If you hate illustrating book reports or drawing for homework, this class will transform your life! You will learn skills to make homework drawing fun and easy. Learn the secrets of cartoon drawing with step-by-step drawing lessons to include: faces, expressions, motion, animals, caricatures, famous faces, scenery, and more. Taught by Mr. T. (Eric Teitelbaum), co-creator of the Pink Panther comic strip and a featured New Yorker artist. Our national, award winning, 5 level program is specially designed for children and builds upon the educational concepts they are learning in the class room including math and science. Fun comes first in every class, but our curriculum also focuses on improving motor skills and physical fitness as well as instilling self-confidence and life values through professional golf instruction. Students learn the fundamentals, etiquette and rules of the game in the comfortable environment of your school campus with a low 10:1 student to professional instructor ratio. Time: 2:25-3:25 p.m. Location: Upper Field # of Meetings: 8 CODE ACADEMY: APP & GAME DEV $195 In this creative and coding focused class, students will learn to build games and apps using visual block based coding. Using code and lots of creativity, students will create animated stories and amazing 2D games. Then, learn the art of game design by creating your own versions of Nintendo classics, like Super Mario and Zelda. Students will then use MIT App Inventor, an application development program originally created by Google and MIT to develop their own custom apps. The program has an intuitive graphical drag and drop interface which allows students to easily create applications for mobile devices. Students will learn to design and develop real, downloadable apps while continuing to learn fundamentals of computer programming and software development. The programming concepts learned transfer to traditional languages such as Python, Java or C#. Each project introduces new concepts that are both engaging and educational. All equipment provided. The postures challenge our physical strength and flexibility while keeping us calm and relaxed. In this class, students will learn yoga by exploring a theme. The fun part is that students choose the theme! Perhaps it s a favorite movie, book or folktale. Maybe it s the Olympics or geography. We can even do yoga for sports like soccer and basketball. The possibilities are endless! Prizes are awarded for good behavior and class participation. Students should wear comfortable clothing: shorts for boys and leggings for girls are good options. In this interactive class, Arts & Learning's teaching artist will develop and train your child with the skills that are essential for musical theater along with inspiring you child, most importantly, with creativity and confidence. Acting, singing and dancing will take place during our class and will culminate with a theater style presentation, complete with costumes and props. Time: 1:30-2:30 p.m. Location: Room 15 # of Meetings: 8 EYE ON TURTLE ROCK NEWS NEWS! $130 Create, report and communicate the news at Turtle Rock Elementary! This class will encompass all of the cool things you see on the local news. Learn all about creating stories, reporting, speaking the news, as well as using cool equipment to make a broadcast (online) program to be shown at Turtle Rock. Students will learn how to speak on camera and the importance of articulation and voice volume, developing good pacing and optimal eye contact. Students will learn to use digital video cameras and good camera techniques. Computers will be used to create green screen effects in the full production of a school news program. Finally, strong teamwork will be used so that reports, anchors, and crew members work together to create broadcast news programs to be shown at the school. Provider: Movies By Kids Grades: 3-6 Wed. Time: 1:30-2:30 p.m. Location: Innovation Lab # of Meetings: 8 T R MINECRAFT UNIVERSITY: CIVILIZATIONS $195 Our history-based Civilizations course allows students to travel back in time to discover ancient history and geography in a brand new way that captivates and educates. Kids explore ancient civilizations, go on quests, meet characters from different eras, and collaborate as a team to build amazing themed projects straight from the pages of their textbooks. Teaching history through Minecraft gives kids the rare opportunity to step in to history and really live it, instead of just reading about it. All equipment provided. Learn how to improve your shooting, passing, catching and rebounding skills! Instructors will teach you about player positioning, dribbling, ball handing and team concepts. Instruction includes offensive tactics such as shot selection and scoring while defensive tactics emphasize positioning and pressure from various areas of the court. Provider: Fit Kids America. Grades: 4-6 Wed. Time: 1:30-2:30 p.m. Location: BB Courts # of Meetings: 8 CLASSROOM MONITORS WANTED! We need your help! Would you be willing to help monitor ACE classes 1 to 1½ hours per week? Volunteers who monitor receive discounted tuition for each day they monitor. The work is easy -take roll, make sure children are accounted for, assist where necessary, and see that all children are picked up after classes. Interested in helping out? NO class November 23, December 28 & January 4 LEGO ENGINEERING: JEDI ACADEMY $195 Our Jedi Engineers will design and create amazing vehicles, contraptions and creatures from the galaxy far, far away. Students will race LEGO Pod Racers from Tatooine, create motorized Sandcrawlers to search for droids, maneuver Speeder Bikes through trees and control AT-AT s on Hoth as they help each side in the battle between the Rebels and the Empire. Engineers will explore motors, engineering, architecture and all things LEGO through the popular theme of the Star Wars universe! Provider: Brainstorm STEM Education. Grades: 1-3 Thu. Time: 1:45-2:45 p.m. Location: Room 29 # of Meetings: 8 LET S PLAY CHESS $156 From first move to checkmate this after-school program presents a fun way to learn to play Chess. Step-by-step lessons introduce students to important analytical and problem solving strategies, which are also key components for successful classroom study. An information-packed, fun-filled activity including mini-tournaments and prizes. Time: 1:45-2:45 p.m. Location: Room 35 # of Meetings: 8 YOGA STORY ADVENTURES $82 Explore your favorite stories and movies like Stand Tall Molly Lou Mellon, the Mysterious Giant of Barletta, Star Wars and Mulan using classic yoga movements. Each class begins with yoga games & breathing exercises. This is followed by interactive storytelling where we describe character, plot and setting with yoga poses. On the last day, students may make up their own poses and show them to the class. Prizes are awarded for good behavior and class participation. Through this class, students will develop body awareness, strength, flexibility and confidence. Students should wear comfortable clothing: shorts for boys and leggings for girls are good options. Time: 1:45-2:45 p.m. Location: Room 7 # of Meetings: 8 PRE MED: LIFE SCIENCE BIOLOGY $150 Do you possibly want to be a doctor or veterinarian? Well this is the class for you! Come join us in a Hands-on adventure in the study of comparative anatomy of many animal groupings and their unique characteristics. Dissect a different species each class section and learn how living things relate to one another. We will start with the earthworm and learn how it is a distant relative to man. We will dissect a giant grasshopper and learn about insects, the most numerous living creatures on Earth with and estimated 100 million Arthropoda per acre in some areas. We will study the invertebrates such as the crayfish and their special abilities of breathing underwater. We will also dissect frogs and investigate how their anatomy might look very different on the outside but are mini humans on the inside. Students feel good about themselves when they learn they can create something amazing from a block of clay. They will learn different hand-building techniques, molding, decorating and glazing of their very own projects. Our instructor will bring project ideas to each class and allow students to use their imaginations to complete these projects or design one of their own. This class encourages manual dexterity, fine motor skills, builds self-confidence, and encourages imaginative play. All of our junior chemists will even get to hold a cloud and create their own COMET, while safely observing dry ice! Combine drone components in different ways to create everything from hexacopters to hovercrafts using this innovative building system. With magnetic attachments and modularity, these drones are only limited by your imagination. Take to the skies and learn to pilot your new creation, then discover how to use code and algorithms to give your drone a mind of it s own as you race against a friend or even have an epic air battle. After ACE class, promptly pick up your student from the ACE class location. Grade 1-3 students must be signed out from ACE class unless the student s profile at indicates student s Transportation as responsible for themselves. CDC students: Please also report directly to the ACE class location. Do not check in at CDC prior to ACE class. After ACE, students will be escorted to the CDC. Be sure to notify the CDC you have enrolled your student in ACE.!! GET A SNEAK PEEK OF THE FALL ACE CLASSES LUNCH DEMOS OCTOBER 30 - NOVEMBER 3 ACE Contractors will be on hand to demonstrate activities and answer questions during lunch period. 9 GENERAL INFORMATION REGISTRATION: Begins: Thursday, October 26 Ends: Saturday, November 4 Classes start: Monday, November 6 Register at Enrollment is subject to class availability. If we have space in classes after the registration period, we may accept additional students. HOW TO REGISTER: 1. Login at Please use Chrome or Safari as your browser; older versions of Internet Explorer are not supported. 2. If you have not created a User /- Password account, you will need to create one for yourself. Click Create An Account. Once you have successfully created a parent profile, you will be directed to login. 3. Click on Add a Student to create profiles for each of your students if one does not already exist. For existing students, verify profiles are up to date including grade, homeroom and transportation. 4. Click Register for Classes. 5. Select the desired class(es) and checkout. 6. Once you have checked out, you will receive an confirmation listing your student s class enrollment. REFUNDS: Tuition is nonrefundable unless the class is cancelled by the ACE coordinator. If your child registers late, misses classes or withdraws before the end of the session, you are still obligated for the full fees for that session. You are eligible for a prorated tuition refund or credit only if your child withdraws due to serious illness or injury, corroborated by a note from your doctor. All refunds are subject to a $25 non-refundable program fee. Please be advised that refunds may take up to one month to process. FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS: Receipts for programs attended by your child are available on request after completion of the programs. CLASS AGE LIMITS: In order to develop classes suitable for a particular age range, we specify age limits in the brochure. CLASS CONFIRMATIONS: Class Confirmations are ed upon successful completion of enrollment. Please add webmaster@ipsf.net to your address book. CLASS CANCELLATIONS: We do our best to accommodate all students who sign up for ACE classes. In order to keep class fees as low as possible, we must set a minimum enrollment number for each class to cover the class expenses. If the minimum enrollment is not met, the ACE Program reserves the right to cancel the class and return all registration fees. You will be notified of any cancellations before the first scheduled day of class. TRANSPORTATION: Getting students to and from class is the responsibility of parents. In the first week of classes, ACE site monitors will attempt to locate registered students who are not present in their class. After that week, however, we expect that the students will know where they should go. If your child has difficulty remembering to go to class, you might want to escort him/her or contact another child in the class so your child has a buddy to provide a reminder about class. ACE students must be picked up immediately after class. Arranging pick-up is the responsibility of parents. School staff, ACE instructors and ACE volunteer monitors are not responsible for your child after class. If you are late picking your student up two times, your student will be removed from the program and there are no refunds. SNACKS: Your child is always welcome to bring a personal snack. Please do not send any snacks containing peanut or tree nut products. Please contact the school site ACE coordinator immediately if your child has severe food allergies. CONTINUING CLASSES: Unless noted otherwise in the brochure, students in continuing classes must submit a registration form and payment for each session. CONDUCT: Normal classroom conduct is expected of all ACE students and we generally have very few problems with the behavior of our students. Children displaying unacceptable behavior will be issued a one-time Behavior Citation that will have to be signed by a parent before the student can continue the class. If a second citation is necessary, the child will be dismissed without refund. SCHOLARSHIPS: A limited number of 50% - 75% scholarships are available for all classes based on need. MONITORS WANTED: Would you like to help monitor ACE classes 1 to 1-1/2 hours per week? The work is easy taking roll, assisting any children who need help, occasionally helping with classroom set up and clean up, and randomly checking on each class a few times during the class period.
