1 MONTEMALAGA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL ELECTION PACKET GRADES 3, 4, AND 5
2 Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District Montemalaga Elementary School Student Body Election (You are responsible for reading all the rules and directions for the election) STUDENT APPPLICATION I, (Print Last Name, First Name) (Room Number) Request that my name be placed in nomination for the Student Council office of. I have read the election rules sheet and agree to follow the guidelines. Student Signature: Parent Signature Two Teacher signatures Please write a minimum of one (1 paragraph) on the lines below explaining why you should be elected to the Montemalaga Student Council:
3 Qualifications to Run for Student Council You must fill out an application and hand into your teacher by Tuesday. You must have the signature of your parents, two teachers, and yourself when you fill out the application. You must write a minimum of one paragraph telling why you should be elected to be in Student Council. Candidates for President must be 5 th graders. Candidates for Vice President may be 4 th or 5 th graders. Candidates for Secretary must be 3 rd or 4 th graders. And Candidates for Treasurer must be in the 3 rd grade. ALL SPEECHES MUST BE APPROVED BY THE CLASSROOM TEACHER AND ONLY APPROVED SPEECHES MUST BE USED. ANY SPEECH WITHOUT APPROVAL FROM A TEACHER MAY CAUSE YOU TO NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ELECTION. ALL CANDIDATES ARE PROVIDED WITH ONE CAMPAIGN POSTER WHICH WILL BE DISPLAYED IN THE MAIN SCHOOL HALLWAY. NO OTHER CAMPAIGN MATERIALS ARE ALLOWED (NO HANDOUTS, GIFTS, CANDY, FLYERS, STICKERS, ETC.) WEDNESDAY WILL BE THE PRIMARY ELECTION IN YOUR CLASSROOM. BE SURE TO PREPARE A SHORT SPEECH (1-2 MINUTES) TO BE GIVEN IN YOUR CLASSROOM TO TELL WHY YOU WANT TO BE A STUDENT COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVE OR OFFICER
4 Job Descriptions President: Will help run the two regularly scheduled meetings each month at lunch in room 20. The President will meet with the Principal weekly to discuss ideas and agendas for meetings. The President will make sure that all Student Council activities are organized and planned. The President will help with the Monday morning announcements. Vice President: Will assist the President in all duties and will help with Monday morning announcements Secretary: Will take attendance at each meeting and will keep accurate notes/records of what is decided at all meetings. Secretary will also write any letters to people from Student Council, as needed. Treasurer: Will count money from events/activities with an adult and will report at meetings current budget items. Student Schedule for Student Council Elections Be sure to pick up an application form the school office anytime on Thursday before the elections week- Tuesday: Return the completed application to your Homeroom teacher Wednesday: Primary elections will be held in each classroom (grades 3, 4, and 5). The students give their speeches to the homeroom class. The class votes. The student with the most votes wins and gives their speech in Friday s election assembly in the morning. The student with the second most votes will automatically be the classroom representative to student council. Additionally, the teacher will select one student from the class to be the third representative. Each classroom will have three representatives. Those students giving speeches during the election assembly need to get poster material from the office before going home in the afternoon Thursday: Posters must be given to the main office before the start of school. School Staff will hang the posters on Thursday morning in the hallway. Friday: Election Assembly at 9:00 in the MPR Parents are welcome to attend! Speeches will be given to all 3-5 classes attending the assembly. All 3-5 classes will vote immediately after the assembly. Teachers will tally the votes and send to the front office for a final count.
5 Student Council Election Poster and Speech Guidelines Congratulations to you! If you are reading about poster and speech guidelines then you have been selected by your class to be a candidate for a Student Council Office. The election will take place on Friday morning at 9:00. Please use the following information to help plan your speech and poster. Contact Mrs. Pastell in the office if you have any additional questions. Poster Guidelines: You must use the poster paper provided by school You must include your name and the office you are running for at school You may not attach any extra giveaways to the poster Your poster may be decorated creatively using slogans, photos, pictures, and anything appropriate for school You may not hand out anything to campaign at school Speech Guidelines: Have fun and be creative No props allowed Be realistic with the promises you are making to fellow students Talk about such things as why you wanted to run for the office, why you are qualified, how you want to help the school, past experiences, etc. Be sure to practice your speech many times in front of someone else before the Friday assembly Good luck!
