2 Principals Report The Annual Report details the performance of Northcliffe District High School. I wish to acknowledge the contributions of staff, students and the broader community for their role in creating a caring and positive learning environment. This report represents highlights of the year, areas for improvement and outlines strategies to move the school into the future. Details of performance and a range of systemic data are included for your information. Northcliffe is an excellent school and provides an inclusive learning environment for all its students. Our school community is one in which everyone feels valued and where individual differences are appreciated, understood and accepted. Our Mission Statement Northcliffe District High School, in partnership with the community, provides a safe learning environment which fosters integrity and courage and challenges and motivates students to achieve their potential. Student Performance National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy ( NAPLAN) This nation-wide testing program is conducted in early Term 2. Students from Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are involved in the program. It is marked externally and every student is assessed in relation to achievement benchmarks. The benchmark is a nationally agreed standard of performance that represents the minimum levels required for students to make adequate progress in their schooling. The following set of graphs show the mean score of the NAPLAN results for Northcliffe DHS from They provide a picture of a trend over time and serve us as a baseline for purposes of comparison in future years, in the school context. All the graphs show strong results in Year 3 and indicate a steady progress through to Year 9. Spelling 2

9 Northcliffe District High School Annual School Report Highlights ICT Initiatives: Laptop computers (one per student) purchased for every high school student 30 ipads available in the primary block Desk top computers have been consolidated into one laboratory in the primary block. Languages: Our French and Indonesian students enter their second year of language studies through the School of Isolated and Distance Education. Perth & Local Work Experience: Year 9 & 10 students participated in Work Experience this year. Music: Mr Carrie runs a vibrate and highly valued music program across the years from K - Year 10. Each year the students are treated to a performance from Music a Viva. Sporting Events: Students have many opportunities to participate in a wide variety of sporting events during the school year. events included the Faction and Interschool Athletics Carnivals, the Summer and Winter Secondary Carnivals, Primary School Cross Country and a squash and basketball incursion. Social Events: Fun & Games: Primary Games afternoons are run by the Student Council and Peer Helpers and are very well attended. These are coordinated by Mrs Makin. Socials: Secondary Social are held each term and are based on different themes. 9

10 Northcliffe District High School Annual School Report Highlights Camps: Walpole Camp: Mrs Robins Year 2/3/4 had a 2 day camp at Walpole and stayed in cabins at the Coalmine Beach Caravan Park. They went on the Walpole Inlet Tour and visited the Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk. Camp Kalgoorlie: Miss Cullen s Year 5/6 experienced a five day camp to Kalgoorlie They visited iconic historic sites, panned for gold and visited the Super Pit. A big highlight of the camp was the train trip on the Prospector. Peer Support Camp: The Peer Support program is integral to the pastoral care offered at our school. This camp is held annually and offers senior students access to the training required to act as counsellors to other students across the school. Mrs Moss Coordinates this program. Canberra Camp: Secondary students spent one week in Canberra visiting Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, the Canberra Zoo, Questacon, the Australian Mint and the National Museum of Australia. They also spent two days in skiing in the Snowy Mountains. Two of our students were selected to lay a wreath at the War Memorial at a remembrance ceremony for an Australian solder killed in the conflict in Afghanistan. 10

11 Northcliffe District High School Annual School Report Science: Ribbons of Blue Project: Miss Camden (Secondary Science Teacher) worked in conjunction with Ribbons of Blue to carry out a research project with scientists from Murdoch University on the Balston s Pygmy Perch. The research involved field trips and has lead to the development of conservation sites for this threatened species. The results of this research have been published. Visual Arts Program: Under the guidance of our art teacher, Mrs Moss, the students continue to develop their skills and produce really outstanding work. Other Events: Harmony Day Celebrations. End of Year Reward Day. Interschool Cross Country. Spare Parts Puppet Performance. Award Winning Student - Michael Keller: Year 9 student, Michael Keller was selected as one of only 32 students across Western Australia to attend the Premier s Tour of Gallipoli in The rigorous selection process involved a written essay and a personal interview. We are very proud of his achievements and the application and endeavour he demonstrates in all he does. 11

12 2015 Priorities I am very proud of the range and depth of learning experiences offered to the students of Northcliffe District High School. The staff work tirelessly to ensure that students have access to high quality teaching and learning. I am also equally proud of the degree of involvement and feedback from parents and community members. Regular parent help is a feature of this school. Educational Priorities Our aim is to continue to deliver a balanced curriculum that meets the needs of all learners. Extensive analysis of student achievement has been carried out and the following areas have been highlighted as priorities for the coming year across all year levels: Reading: Drawing conclusions and making inferences Distinguishing between fact and fiction Interpreting figurative language Writing: Spelling Persuasive writing - all aspects Grammar and Punctuation: Semantics and sub- semantic groups Numeracy: Fact families Place value Comparing numbers Fraction Concepts These priority areas will be specifically targeted through three new programs being run across the school. These programs ensure continuity of progress, regular assessment strategies and a consistent approach to teaching across all years. SIDE courses will be made available to the Secondary students in the learning areas of Mathematics, Health, Electronics and Information Technology. Buildings and Grounds The front office renovations are now complete and we will be focusing on: Nature Play Space Secondary Learning Area Sustainability Project 12
