Bigger than a mom & pop place, but way more communityfocused and health-mindful than the huge pizza chains. Dewey s Pizza 124 N. Kirkwood Rd., 122 E. Lockwood, Webster Groves, MO Salina s Cantina 20 Clarkson Wilson Center, Chesterfield, MO If you live here a long time, you might think this is one of those really big coffee chains... however, when you are doing business throughout St. Louis, Kaldi s is a sure way to ensure you get a great product from a company that cares and gives back to their community. They have good buying and roasting practices. A bit of a haul for those that live in or near Kirkwood, but this is definitely worth a trip. I grew up in Arizona and enjoyed some of the best home-cooked Mexican food anyone has ever tasted thanks to a terrific mother and other family members who grew up miles from the Mexican border. Kirkwood Road, 8161 Big Bend, Webster Groves, MO Small local chain. For semi-local fast food, Lions Choice does lean roast beef, etc. without oodles of chemical sauces. 5 I'd like to recommend Roger's Produce on Lockwood at Big Bend. This guy offers locally-grown produce in season, and non-local (including Christmas wreaths!) the rest of the year. It's basically a roadside produce shack with electricity, and people who work the place are hard-working and generous with their smiles. Kirkwood Farmers Market Across the street from Eliot, at the intersection of E. Argonne Drive and Taylor Avenue Roger s Produce 625 E Lockwood Ave, Webster Groves, MO The Kirkwood Farmers' Market is another favorite place for one-on-one connections. Yes, it's a business, but it's about so much more than selling produce. It's another place where they know me by name, and many of my former students have worked there. It's a warm feeling to hear them say hello when they see me checking out the strawberries and peaches. I wanted to nominate Eliot's neighbor, Global Foods Market, as a local human business. I love to take my kids shopping there. The clientele and foods offer a wonderful slice of crossculturalism that most kids wouldn't ordinarily experience. I also love the personal touch from the employees (the owner bagged our groceries yesterday). The owner has a great story of immigration to the area with his brother. 6 OK Hatchery 115 E Argonne Dr., Christopher s 127 East Argonne, The Krieger family started OK Hatchery sometime in the early 1900s and is one of the most unique businesses I have ever seen. Even if you don't need a pound of grass seed or three pounds of bird seed, it's worth just stopping by and looking at their family business. I even buy locally produced honey from them. Moonbeams 124 West Jefferson, The Kirkwood Train Station is opened and closed daily totally by volunteers. In 2003, Amtrak stopped staffing the station and locked it up. Kirkwood citizens and train buffs from all over stepped forward and organized a volunteer group to keep this Kirkwood landmark open. Kirkwood purchased the station from Amtrak and maintains it. I am one of those volunteers who stops by the Kirkwood Police Station to pick up the key to the train station to open it for passengers and grandparents who simply want to take their grandchildren on a train ride between here and Kansas City. The station was built in 1893 and is a beauty. Down by the Station 150 West Argonne Dr., Clay and Cotton 159 West Argonne, Kirkwood Train Station 110 West Argonne, Kirkwood Public Library 140 E. Jefferson, Mudd s Grove At the corner of West Argonne and North Harrison Kirkwood The Kirkwood Historical Society maintains lovely Mudd's Grove, built in 1859 just two blocks west of the train station. It is also run totally by volunteers.

7 Six Row Brewing Company 3690 Forest Park Ave., St. Louis, MO Spirits Terrific beer, adventurous brew master and a killer menu. Big-time brew master from that other, large St. Louis based brewery left and started this place. He s a student of German beers and boy can you tell by the taste of these babies. Good stuff. Go in the spring and fall for an awesome patio experience. Urban Chestnut Brewing 3229 Washington Ave., St. Louis, MO Schlafly Beer Schlafly Bottleworks 7260 Southwest Ave., St. Louis, MO The Tap Room 2100 Locust St., St. Louis, MO This place rocks. It really does. Awesome menu. Terrific beer. Big production and wide distribution. What I really like about these guys is how the play. In the brewery scene, they are doing a lot to help the little guys. Even though Six Row and other places are competing, Schlafly does whatever it can to help them out. Good people. Good spirit. A special mention about beer I am fan of small, locally-brewed beer. While the taste and flavors are always fun to sample and fall in love with, I especially like how small brewpubs can become part of how one can define a city. What makes European traditions for beer great is that just about every small and large city in England, Germany and many other places, has their own little place that all the locals go to. That s their place. Here are a few of my favorite, local, human-sized breweries that should be a must-go destination for beer lovers.
