2 Hi! Nice to meet you. Wow. You have a child who s using a tango! We can imagine what you might be feeling. Excitement over the new communication possibilities. And also a bit of anxiety about all the new things you re going to find, all the skills you ll need to tap, and the realities of what the day to day experience might be like. Well, we have some good news. The tango! wasn t just created to make communication easier for kids. It was also created to make supporting children easier for therapists. It was created so you could do more. The tango! will allow a child to do things previously unthinkable for someone who needed to rely upon a speech-generating device. You ll find unprecedented access to communication, and powerful tools to customize and create new social and academic situations. You ll discover opportunities for communication that are faster, easier and more fun than ever before. With the tango!, children are also able to fit in better. With our powerful Core and Topic Words, one can build sentences and pursue literacy. But with tools like Phrase First communication, Photo Albums, Voice Morphing, and tango! Stories, children area better able to reach out to friends and others. We know the first steps with any AAC device can be a bit overwhelming for anyone. But learning to use a speech-generating device doesn t have to be hard work. It can be fun! And with the right lessons, anything is possible. So enjoy. These tango! lessons provide a fun way for therapists and children to interact in real communication situations and share the experience of learning how to use the tango! All you ll need to do is follow the simple steps on the following pages. Each lesson should take no more than a half hour you can often do them in less. On each page, you ll find 5 areas Goal This describes the technical or academic thing you will learn that day. What To Do! Directions on how you should direct the lesson. 3 1 Phrase First Language Goal: Become more familiar with the power of our innovative Phrase First Language Structure. There are over 2,000 phrases pre-recorded on your tango! And you are about to explore even more communication options, as well as one powerful customization feature. Go to the Quick Tip now and turn off the Phrase Scroll Back feature. Anna Foster ER COMMUNICATION MEANS MORE OPPORTUNITIES You may have noticed that the Phrase First Language Structure is very different from every other AAC device. But we think you ll agree it s a more efficient way to communicate so many different and exciting things. There is a lot that everyone says over and over, so why not just speed that up! By turning OFF Scroll Back, you and your child can more easily explore the Phrases on the tango! Explore some of the other Talk Topics like Play-Doh, Candyland, or Mr. Potato Head. And look in our Talk Topics from the Home Page, such as Reading, Snack, and Arts and Crafts. Remember, you turned off the Scroll Back feature, so you need to use the Up Arrow to get back to your Phrase Banks. It may be faster if you turn Auto Scroll Back to ON.
4 2 Basic Communication Structure Goal: Get ready to learn the basic structure of the tango! It s time to experience real conversation with the first AAC device designed to support conversation. Complete this routine with your client. It s fast and it s EASY! Repeat this interaction and slowly build on this theme; expanding the communication turns and opportunities. The tango! is very user-friendly, makes it very easy to express wants and needs. Melissa Cordone, SLP COMMUNICATION CREATES COMMUNITY During a fun activity with a friend, you and your client found lots of cool things to say AND sounded just like SpongeBob! You quickly engaged the child using the tango! as well as their communication partner. You explored the different Phrase Banks, such as Do It phrases (what you do) and Thumbs Up phrases (positive comments). Explore some of the other Phrase Banks in SpongeBob. There s an endless amount of engagement and fun. Look at Things, Questions, or Thumbs Down. Remember to show them what they can say by pressing the buttons yourself, modeling good communication.
5 3 Story Telling! Goal: Let s learn to share favorite conversations in a way that really engages others! We all tell stories over and over again. Now, a child can easily participate in extended turn-taking and experience real engagement, whether telling favorite stories, or using ones that come with the tango! Here, we ll explore Stories found in each Talk Topic. But you ll find more Stories under the Stories button on the Home Page Mr. Potato Head y o u sa y: Let s play with Mr. Potato Head and let s ask someone to play with us. This is going to be so much fun! Press home. Press right arrow. Press custom topics 1. Point to, pause, and press Mr. Potato Head. Point to and press Story. (whisper to you child) This Story is going to help you tell them what you want to do. I m going to press this first button and let s listen to what it says. Press One. Hey I want to do something. Okay. Now you keep going and tell them what we should do. Point to button Two. Pause and give them time to access the tango! c h i l d sa y s: You want to know what it is? Yes, tell me! If they need a cue, point to Three. Give them a chance first to initiate on their own. I want to play Mr. Potato Head. Continue through the Story and the child will control the sequence of assembling Mr. Potato Head. They will be giving directions, making requests, asking questions, and commenting; an instant communicator! And, if you want to make it even easier, turn on Automated Social Scripts feature. This way, your student can hit any button in any order, and the Story will still continue step by step. Quick steps to Automated Social Scripts Enter programming mode push the abc and Poptalk! buttons at the same time. Press right arrow. Press toggle functions. Press social scripts in sequence. Press on. Exit programming mode. I think the visual cues paired with the auditory support are what make the tango! a truly unique and wonderful device. Your child can ask questions, make comments, give commands, and take turns with a partner about many different topics and activities. You also learned how to make this interaction even easier for your child so the buttons do not have to be pushed in the correct number sequence to get the story. You ll find a Story in every Talk Topic. Look at SpongeBob and sing his song for everyone. Go to Bubbles and read the Bubble Book together. Or go to Recess and lead a game of Hot Potato. The tango! is the only AAC device to incorporate such engaging and stimulating communication tools for children of all levels of language learning.
6 4 Using Word Banks Goal: Let s start adding words to how we use the tango! You ve already mastered the phrases on the tango! Now begin adding the 4,000 words to your communication! Words are found in every Talk Topic and also in the Lists area on the Home Page. For this activity make sure to turn Scroll Back After Phrase to ON. Lesson 2 will remind you how to do this if you forgot. Let s play Candyland! you say: Okay. Let s play Candyland. Press home. Press right arrow. Press Custom Topic 1. Press Candyland. What should we do first? Press Do It, pause, point to Pick Game piece. There are 4 types of Word Banks Nouns Verbs Modifiers My Words* Don t forget to add your own My Words c h i l d sa y s: I want to pick my piece. Okay, I ll show each one to you. Let me know when you see the one you want. (child indicates which piece he wants) Press things. Point to card. I wonder what we should do next? I need a card please. I hope it s a good one! Discover the power of COMBINInG PHRASES AND WORDS You ve seen the efficiency of the phrases and now you ve experienced the precision of the words. Use a phrase to initiate an activity, then use the words to add specificity to your interaction. It can be a lot more engaging and efficient then waiting to build an entire sentence. In this example, you were able to review different parts of the games as well as find out favorite places and characters. Later on, you will learn how to use Word Banks to build sentences, providing even more communication power. After only minimal practice, a young man I work with independently ordered at McDonald s, paid for it, and said, Thank you, have a nice day. We think you ll agree it s easier to navigate a group of important topic words, rather than be confronted by huge pages of vocabulary.
7 5 PopTalk! Goal: Learn to communicate quickly with the power of PopTalk! PopTalk! provides many commonly used phrases needed frequently throughout the day. You can always get to PopTalk! just by pressing the (!) button. Right now, PopTalk! closes as soon as you say something and returns you to where you last were. However, to explore PopTalk! more efficiently, just turn off the Auto Close feature. (See Tip) Ask for some help y o u sa y: I want to show you how you can tell me if something is wrong, like if you are need a drink or need to go the bathroom. Then I ll show you a couple of other things too. Press PopTalk!. Press Help. Point to Something s Wrong. Auto Close PopTalk! Enter programming mode Press right arrow Press toggle functions Press PopTalk! Close After Speaking Press OFF Exit programming mode Something s wrong. I need your help. Oh...Okay. Let me see how I can help. Point to and press the following options: Bathroom, Hungry, Drink, Tired. Make sure you model all the choices. c h i l d sa y s: I need to go to the bathroom. Okay, I m almost ready. Can you wait a little bit longer before we go? Press NO. Point to No, No Way, Not Ok, Don t think so. Once again, make sure you model all the choices by using the tango! yourself. No way! Yikes! Well all right then, let s get going! being fast can be fantastic With speech-generating devices, research has shown it s often hard for individuals to initiate conversation. Among other things, it s often hard to just get a conversation going. PopTalk! gives kids fast and easy access to important phrases useful in any setting, with any communication partner. They re a quick way to say hello, tell people about yourself, or give directions. Remember, like any phrase on the tango!, PopTalk! phrases are fully customizable. So add your child s own frequently used phrases. It s going to be most meaningful and powerful if greetings are done within a functional context. So walk down the hallway in school or go visiting, and have your child greet different people. After reviewing the instruction book for minutes with my son, we both felt confident in using the tango! 8 6 Making Photo Albums Goal: Create a photo album and communicate in a new way. Photo Albums are an amazing communication tool that let you share information. Create up to 30 Photo Albums, with 12 pictures in each. Imagine sharing a school field trip, family vacations, what you did in school today, or something as simple as what you did last night. The possibilities are endless! And they are created and stored right on your tango! Tell someone something new Take pictures of an activity done with the child like making cookies. He can take this home and share it with family. You can also synthesize what you say! It s easy to record for quick story telling But spellers or kids learning literacy can also synthesize the message Just hit Synthesize instead of record! Quick steps to create a Photo Album Press Home. Press take Photo button 6 is your viewfinder. Take a photo of the bowl or ingredients for Making cookies. Press create album. (the first photo you took will become your album cover) Name your album Making cookies. (as you spell, watch for your word prediction) Press Save twice. Now take a photo of the first step and see how button 6 is still your viewfinder. Press Take a Photo. Redo it if you want. Place it in your photo album. It s now in your first button. 8 Press Record to add a message. When you hear the beep, speak in a normal voice. For best results speak four inches from the microphone. 9 Press Stop when you are done recording your message. 10 Press Voice Morph to give the message some originality. 11 Press Save All. 12 Take another photo or press Home. Press Photo Albums to select your new album or find your photos. you sa y: Let s practice telling Mom and Dad about making cookies. Use your photo album, it s right here. Let s practice. Then you can tell everyone when you get home! chi l d: (presses any picture, order is not important right now) The expression on my kids faces were priceless. Once they began to navigate the phrases and Talk Topics they loved it! Janice Edmonson picture perfect communication With Photo Albums, your client can quickly communicate new ideas and share important events. For example, things that happened that day, or something from a special day, or something he did in therapy with you that day. A built-in camera isn t a gimmick. It s a tool for integrating important things and objects into daily conversations. And now you can do that in 2 minutes, not 20! Photo Albums are a fast and fun way to always be ready to share a story or something that just happened. Create new albums for your clients favorite therapy activities. Photo Albums allow your child to communicate motivating experiences when they see their family or meet new people.
9 7 Personalize the tango! Goal: Create personalized picture symbols for each activity. You just explored the power of the camera and Photo Albums in the previous step. Now use the camera to create new picture symbols that are meaningful for your student. It s a great way to motivate a child to want to use the tango! You are not going to believe how easy it is to seamlessly integrate pictures into your tango! It s faster and more efficient than any communication device today. Let s play dress-up It s simple and fast to customize the tango! for your student! Take pictures of the child s favorite dress-up clothes and customize the phrases in the Dressing set. Much of the language is appropriate for playing dress-up as well as getting dressed in the morning. What a great way to reinforce functional communication in a play activity. Taking Great Photos The key to taking great photos is to make sure that only one object is central. For example, if taking a picture of a shirt, lay it on a single-colored bedspread or towel. Don t have patterns or too much going on. Quick steps to customize a button in Dressing Press Home. Press Talk Topics. Enter Dressing. Press Things. Enter programming mode. Press Edit Existing. Press t-shirt. Press Change Image. Take picture of a dress up item (cape, crown, dress). Press Use this photo or Redo if you need to. Press Edit Audio Phrase. Press redo if you want to record your new message, or press synthesize if you want to type out a synthesized message. Press Save Audio. Press Save All. Play Dress-up: Ask for your favorite dress-up items. Press Home. Press Talk Topics. Point to and press Dressing. you say: Let s play dress-up. Point to, pause, and press Things. Okay, what do you want? child says: I want my Superman cape. Great, let s get it and put it on. I am amazed how quickly he has taken to the tango! Spring Dolbec add images for added interest The built-in camera allows you to seamlessly integrate new pictures right into the tango! and make picture symbols meaningful and motivating for your student. There is nothing more meaningful to a child than to have a communication message attached to a picture of their favorite toy, or their favorite shirt or a picture of their mom or dad. Refer to your Quickstart Guide for more detailed instructions on how to edit a button. Look at other Talk Topics, and customize with more personal communication options. Or look to Lists, and My Stuff. Here, you can add all sorts of important vocabulary for your work. Once you begin customizing, you will see there s endless possibilities of customizing, and creating engaging and motivating communication.
10 8 Personalize PopTalk! Goal: Create a great way for kids to easily introduce themselves to others. The About Me set in PopTalk! provides key messages important for your child. You ll find phrases that let him say hello and tell others about himself. As well as phrases for basic answers, directions, and safety. PopTalk! means quick communication in any setting. See the Quick Tip to learn how to make great recordings! All about me! Quick steps to customize 1 Press Poptalk. Press right arrow. Point to, pause, and press About Me. 2 Press button 1 (Name). 3 Enter programming mode. 4 Press edit existing. 5 Press Name. 6 Press Edit Audio Phrase. 7 Press Redo. Record your name here. (remember, wait for the beep!) 8 Press Stop when done recording. Listen to your name. If you like the way it sounds, press Save Audio. 9 Now if you are done, press save all. Press Edit Existing. 10 Type in your name, just as you recorded it. Press Edit Text Phrase. 11 Press the green Edit button. Press Clear. Now type your name. 1 2 Make sure your typed messages match your recording. Press Save and Save Text. Now do the same for the next Symbol Buttons such as address, phone number, etc. Here s something important to know: Press your right arrow when you want to use numbers, and if you need a space or capital letter press edit text. You have learned, firsthand, how easy it is to customize content on the tango! No dynamic screen device is this easy or this intuitive. In minutes, you will be able to customize the entire About Me set, providing your student with an easy way to begin building relationships with the important people in their life. In PopTalk! press the Right Arrow and explore How I Communicate, another important and powerful communication set. How to make great recordings Before speaking, wait one second after you hear the beep. The microphone is checking background noise levels. Speak 4 inches from the microphone. You don t have to speak loud but do add energy and emotion. Quick Customization! Unheard Of! I think that perhaps you are just beginning to see the tip of the iceberg in the changing tide you are all creating. Susanne Frische There are other important areas where you can personalize content! Go to Things in New People and add your own phrases and pictures of family and friends. Or go to My Stuff in Lists. You ll want to personalize with family members, favorite DVDs, etc.
11 9 Move, Hide, and Swap Buttons Goal: To further customize areas, you can swap, move, and hide buttons. When you swap or move buttons, your child can find their most important phrases and words even more easily! You can also hide buttons to maximize access and increase language learning opportunities. Let s customize Press Home. Press right arrow. Press 2 custom Talk Topics. Press play-doh. Press things. If your student s favorite Play-Doh activity is to make a snake, and he asks for that every time, move it to the first screen. He will access it easier and faster. When to hide the camera button Sometimes kids will use the camera feature on the tango! to take pictures of everything and anything If that happens just use the Hide/Show feature to hide the camera button! Move a button Press Play-doh. Press Things. Enter programming mode. Press move, hide and delete. Press Swap buttons. Press Right Arrow. Press Snake. Press Pumper. You ve just created quicker access to the most important information for that child. Some of your students won t be ready for all 6 phrases. Make it easier by hiding buttons. Have them start out with only 3 phrases per page. You can hide any button you want on the tango!. Hide a button 1 Press Play-doh. Press things. Enter programming mode. 2 Press Move, Hide and Delete. 3 Press Hide/Show. 4 Press Knife. Press Button two. Now it s hidden. 5 Repeat the hide sequence. Press Hide/Show. 6 Press hammer. Do this for any of the other symbols. 7 When you re done, press Up Arrow. Press Exit. Her motivation was incredible! Anna Foster create exactly what you want Now you know how to make your child s favorite choices more available. You ve also learned how to hide buttons on the tango! to make it simpler to use and easier to access. In short, you re starting to see how many ways there are to customize the tango! You ll learn even more about this in our Reference Guide. Or check our weekly tips. Further explore this customization. Try the Move Before, or Move After buttons. Unhide the buttons you just hid. See how easy it is to truly make the tango! work better for your child. Also, look to the Reference Guide and see how you can copy buttons and phrases between Talk Topics.
12 10 Create Complete Sentences Goal: It s time to create a message all your own. You can create messages by combining words from Word Banks with the words from the Core Words. Then move on from there by using Core Words and add topic words from Word Lists. With the tango!, you can share any idea you can think of! To make this a bit more efficient, make sure you turn the Phrase Scroll Back to ON. Go back to Lesson 2, if you need some help with that customization feature. Choose the book you want Press Home. Press Talk Topics. Press right arrow. Pause, press Reading. y o u sa y: Okay, let s look at your school book now. c h i l d sa y s: (nothing he doesn t want his school book!) What s wrong? Pause, press Thumbs Down. Point to Boring or Don t like it. Two ways to hear your sentence Press Edit/Speak, then Speak. You will hear what s in the Message Strip Touch the Message Strip. This speaks your message BUT it keeps the words active so you can keep building your sentence This one is boring! or I don t like it. Okay, which one do you want? Press Right Arrow. Press Things to Read. Comic book. Okay. But first, let s write the sentence I want my comic book. I know it might be a little hard but let s do it together. Press Right Arrow. Now you are in Core. Let s start here. Point to the word I. I Great. Now I know you want something. Press button three and point to the word want. Want Perfect! Now let s find the word my. Press button one. Point to My. My Great. Now what do you want to read? Comic book. (they might pick another book and surprise you) She asked me what I was going to do that night. It brought tears to my eyes! Christine Berg PRECISION VS. EFFICIENCY. WHAT S BEST? We can t make that decision for you, but what we can do is provide you with the option to choose what works best for your student, at that time. Phrases allow for quick engaging communication, an unbelievable way to build relationships with the meaningful and important people in their life. Core Words allow your student to provide efficient messages, which take a bit longer to compose, but allow for the precision for such tasks as writing. Explore the other words in the Reading Talk Topic. See how you can combine the different Reading Words with Core Words. It s almost endless! A consistent language structure across Talk Topics supports literacy and language learning, while never limiting communication opportunities.
