13 NOC Enid Intramurals schedule announced NOC Announces Merging Tradition and Technology Project Northern Oklahoma College announces its newest project to serve Native American as well as low-income students, made possible by a federal grant awarded last fall. Funded by a federal grant through the Native American-Serving Nontribal Institutions (NASNTI) program, the Merging Tradition and Technology: Engaging Native American and Low Income Students to Complete College project has identified a wide variety of activities through three main initiatives, according to Charlene Flanery, Title III project director for the NASNTI grant. These activities will be implemented throughout five years, October 2016 through September 2021, she added. The first initiative will revise 30 existing NOC online courses offered to meet Quality Matters certification standards. The six tribal centers within the college service area Otoe-Missouria, Tonkawa and Ponca tribes and Kaw, Osage and Pawnee nations will each be equipped with an access site designed to serve as a computer lab and interactive television (ITV) classroom. The second initiative will develop high quality, interactive online services to support both on-campus and distance education students. These new services will be backed by a new data analytic tool allowing staff to access student-level data in real time in order to provide such benefits as online learning readiness assessment, financial aid advising, academic advising, degree mapping and transfer services. The third initiative is to target Native American student success by establishing a Cultural Engagement Center (CEC) to provide student support services, cultural activities and professional development. Housed within the Vineyard Library- Administration Building at NOC Tonkawa, the center will open next fall. Continued on the next page

14 Continued from the previous page Theodore Ted Moore has been employed as Native American Student Success Specialist to head the CEC, leading the development and piloting of culturally aligned individual coaching and other student support services. He holds a Master of Education degree from Oklahoma City University. The CEC language resource library will provide resources to highlight Native American culture. Also on tap will be opportunities for NOC faculty and staff professional developmental training in strategies for supporting Native American student success. The $1.75 million developmental NASNTI grant was awarded from the United States Department of Education, Office of Legislation and Congressional Affairs over a five-year period. NASNTI grants are given to institutions of higher education having an enrollment of undergraduate students that is not less than 10 percent Native American students and are not a tribal college or university. The NASNTI grant provides greatly needed resources to assist NOC in developing services that will help create additional support services for students to succeed in reaching the academic goals at Northern, NOC President Dr. Chery Evans commented. For more information about the Merging Tradition and Technology project, please visit NOC Mass Comm Student Broadcasts Area Games If you want to find Lee Drake at a Northern Oklahoma College Tonkawa basketball game, he will be courtside, but he is not a member of the team. He is the play-by-play announcer for KAYE 90.7 FM radio. Drake loves to be behind the microphone at sporting events. I really enjoy the games just because I love sports and I love having the opportunity to broadcast them, he commented. He also provided the on-air commentary for Tonkawa Buccaneer high school football last fall. (Photo by Kevin Gum) Communications major. Drake credits Dean Pearcy, the NOC Mass Communications broadcasting faculty member, with helping him improve. Mr. Pearcy has done a great deal to help me better my broadcast and journalism skills, he shared. To gain on-air experience, Drake volunteered to work all 18 home NOC basketball games. Pearcy explained, KAYE is focused on serving the community, and live sports broadcasts for high school and college sports is a great way to do just that. Our listeners understand the students are learning as they go and might make mistakes now and then. Our listeners are supportive of students like Lee who are getting hands-on experience while doing something they enjoy. Lee eats, sleeps, and breathes sports so he is good on the mic. His country drawl adds a unique flavor to his broadcasts and our listeners enjoy him, Pearcy continued. Dr. Rae Ann Kruse, dean of academic services, said, What Lee is doing used to be called on-the-job training. Now it is called service learning. Service learning combines academics and community service, which benefits the student and the local community. NOC is fortunate to have students who value earning work experience while they attend college.

21 Science Tutoring schedule announced for NOC Enid spring semester Earn college credit while traveling abroad with NOC Global Education programs Welcome back to the new academic year. I hope your first few days at Northern have been fantastic and you are looking forward to a productive semester, said Dean of Global Education Wade Watkins. As a student at NOC, you're a part of a historic institution continually ranked as one of the top community colleges in the nation but we are also ranked as one of the top community colleges to send students abroad on short-term study abroad programs. We've sent 1,000+ students overseas to more than 30 countries on all seven continents. Our programs allow students to broaden themselves academically, personally, and professionally, and earn college credits towards a degree. NOC study abroad program courses include: Humanities, Service and Leadership, Lab Science, Nursing, Social Science (history, economics, politics, etc.), International Studies, and Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Management. Students can typically earn 3-6 credit hours by participating on a day study abroad program. These experiences are fast-paced, but the learning opportunities are seemingly endless. Our 2017 Study Abroad trips are as follows: Italy & Greece, Scotland & England, Costa Rica, Peru and Ireland I ll be happy to visit with you or your parents regarding any of these exciting travel opportunities. However, spaces are limited and will go quickly, so consider if a study abroad program might be for you and pay your deposit to travel with us - in a few cases (Italy/Greece, England/Scotland, and Peru), there's a $200 back-to-school discount if your deposit is paid by Aug.t 31. The best place to learn about what NOC is offering for 2017 and beyond is on our Global Education website: I hope you embrace these opportunities and consider traveling abroad with NOC; whether you'll be stepping outside of your comfort zone to experience another culture for the first time or looking to gain valuable experience you can put on your resume. Best of luck...hope to hear from you, Watkins said. You may contact Watkins at or at wade.watkins@noc.edu or 1118 W. Hall of Fame, Stillwater. Click here for related poster
