1 M A Y Emerald Coast Middle School Home of the Stingrays Stingray Station News Volume 2 Issue 30 Celebrating Earth Day Art students celebrated Earth Day by recycling water bottles to create 3 hanging chandeliers. Artist, Dale Chihuly, and his colorful, organic, hand blown glass pieces inspired students. Students worked together to paint over 350 water bottles, cut them into spirals, and attach them to a wire armature following a specific color scheme. It was a challenging, but very rewarding project for all involved. This creation proves that one man s trash can indeed be another man s treasure. Mark the Date! Softball, Girls Basketball and Volleyball Banquet Nine Beta students have qualified to compete in the Junior Beta National Convention this summer in New Orleans. They will compete in Living Literature with a scene from " The Giver." In addition, Sophia Bock qualified for Poetry and Isabella Rose in photography. Let the Beta Times Roll!!!! YEARBOOK Yearbooks can still be ordered online at: Hardcover books are $44.00 Softcover books are $36.00 The ECMS softball, girls basketball and volleyball banquet will be held on May 20 th in the cafeteria beginning at 5:00 pm. Paint n the Rays Will take place on May 23 rd! Student registration forms are available in the office. $10.00 donation is encouraged to support the event and be entered into drawings for prizes. ECMS Band Spring Concert You re Invited! The ECMS band would like to invite everyone to the annual spring concert on Tuesday, May 17 th at 6:00pm in the cafeteria. This year s theme is A Night at the Movies and will feature songs from Pirates of the Caribbean, The Avengers, Ghostbusters, Star Wars & many more. Admission is only $1.00. Come to support your band and enjoy a night of music! URGENT 7 TH GRADE IMMUNIZATION REMINDER As a reminder, all students entering 7 th grade are mandated by Florida law to have a Tdap immunization. An updated copy of your student s immunization record showing the required dose of Tdap should be brought to the school before the start of the school year. Proof of this immunization must be provided before 7 th grade students will be permitted to pick up their schedule of classes or begin school. If your child has not already received the vaccine, please contact your physician or the Florida Department of Health in Walton County to obtain the immunization. The Tdap immunization for 7 th grade student is administered at no cost through the health department. For more information, the Florida immunization requirements are found in the Immunization Guidelines for Florida Schools, Childcare Facilities, and Family Daycare Homes, which is incorporated by reference in Rule 64D , Florida Administrative Code. 3 STINGRAY STATION NEWS VOLUME 2 ISSUE 30 The last meeting of the Science Geeks was held on May 12th. We started off with a bang using Coke and Mentos to celebrate a great year of Geeks. A science themed beading activity was followed by cupcakes and cosmic punch. Thanks for a great year Geeks! -Ms. Murray 3

4 ECMS Hosts 2016 Special Olympics A fun filled day was had by all, last Friday with participants enjoying activities, many students volunteering with our families helping out & cheering! ECMS Girls Golf Team Josie Bekkers,Gracie O'Hare, Marie Brauer, Grace Liles at Santa Rosa Golf Club Driving range (not pictured, Rachel McCann).

5 ECMS artwork was featured at Artsquest this past weekend as a part of their student exhibit. The weekend arts and crafts festival was held at Grand Boulevard and had an international theme. ECMS students created the following: Mexican Cinco De Mayo quilts, Aztec Suns, and Southwestern Georgia O Keeffe inspired cow skulls with a Mexican blanket background. These colorful works made a bold statement and celebrated the creative contributions of many cultures.

6 2016 ECMS RAY-BOTICS SUMMER CAMP Date: June 13th 16th Time: 9 am until 2 pm Age: Entering 4th-8th grade Overview: You ll learn how to design and program your robots so they can perform all kinds of tasks! Students will learn What is a Robot? history of robotics, and learn to think like an engineer. Then they will learn how to reconfigure Lego EV3 Mindstorms Robots and program them to follow specific commands, be part of robotic team challenges and learn design techniques utilizing software programs. These hands-on activities require students to demonstrate teamwork skills and cooperation in social settings. Students will be grouped according to age and abilities. Pick up a registration form in the office and return completed form to Ms. Glenn. 5 th Grade Reminders Friday, May 13 Fifth grade will be on a field trip to NWFSC attending a symphony. Don t be late to school on this day! BRING YOUR OWN LUNCH unless you preordered one from the school! Tuesday, May 24 Fifth grade is planning to have a field day. Students may bring balls, games, beach blankets etc. Time: 11:00-2:00 Snacks and drinks will be sold or students may bring their own. Block Party! Take the Summer TECH Challenge! Can you keyboard? Take the Keyboarding Challenge this summer and you will have a chance to win a $25.00 itunes or Play Store gift card! We will continue the ceremony on the same evening, recognizing those being promoted to high school and look forward to your attendance and support. Show Up and Show Your Stingray Support! BOOK FAIR Last is Day Monday! Thank you for supporting our spring book fair. We have EXTENDED the book fair through Monday 5/16! Don t forget to check out the Scholastic Book Fairs App too! -Ms. Vance 7th Grade Cookout 7th grade cookout will host a cookout to celebrate our end of the year success with meeting our FSA/EOC goals. Students will be responsible for bringing in the following items through their 3rd period classes. The following items need to be turned in by May 18 th to 3 rd period Classes: Civics 3rd period classes- individual drinks (waters, Gatorades, Capri Suns...) Math 3rd period classes- chips/condiments Science 3rd period classes- hot dogs and buns L.A. 3rd period classes- frozen hamburger patties and buns Any other donations would greatly be appreciated!
