Likewise, thank you to the HEF for all of your support to the students and staff of Capital High School! Chasing the Dragon In conjunction with the Helena Police Department, the Missouri River Drug Task Force, as well as the Helena Education Foundation, students will be able to view the documentary entitled, Chasing The Dragon, during an assembly format in the CHS gym on Tuesday, January 23rd. Both high schools will have similar assemblies, including a panel of professionals who deal with issues related to increased drug use. Students will be able to anonymously text questions to the panel of experts following the viewing of the documentary. Finally, the HEF is sponsoring a community session that will be held on Thursday, January 25th, starting at 7:00 at the Helena Middle School Auditorium. More information regarding this event will be distributed to you later in January as we get closer to the scheduled events. Talk to Your High Schooler about the High Cost of Dropping Out Not long ago, a student who dropped out of high school could still live a comfortable life. In 1967, nearly half of high school dropouts earned enough money to be considered part of the middle class. But today? The numbers have changed. Most high school dropouts find themselves at the very bottom of the income scale. The economy has changed. Many of the jobs that allowed people without an education to earn a good living are gone. Today, high school dropouts can get only low-wage jobs with no opportunity for advancement. Poor attendance is often one of the first signs that a student is preparing to drop out of school. If your teen s attendance is less than perfect, deal with the issue. Get your teen back into the habit of going to school regularly. By keeping them in school today, you ll help them earn a living in the future. 2 Capital High and Helena High School have partnered once again with Sycamore Learning Company out of Colorado to offer a fantastic ACT Prep opportunity. In the past we have offered a Sunday 5-hour workshop, but after some feedback, we are going to now offer it as two evening sessions instead. To accommodate student s schedules, the workshop will be offered at 2 different times each evening. You can pay online or by check the day of the 1 st session. You can pick either time for either session. (you don t have to attend the same time each day, pick the times that work best for you) PowerSchool Parent Portal Access Click on Q1 grades to bring up classes and individual grades that make up that total grade. Click on Absences/Tardies to bring up Absences or Tardies in those classes. Click on Attendance Totals and it will bring up a running total in all classes. 5 Dear Parent/Guardian: As found on the front page of the IR on 12/11/2017, our district was notified by College Board that we have again been selected to the AP Honor Roll. This is five out of the last eight years and the third year consecutively that our district has been recognized for AP excellence. Please see the following communique from Ms. Ridgway, Director of Student and Staff Services: Our District is considered to be a medium district so the bar is 6% for improvement. You may be interested in how many districts can make a claim to being on the honor roll for 5 years, the last three consecutively. Of the 2,213 districts that have been on the honor roll the past 8 years, only 25 have been on it five times such as our district This year our district is one of 447 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the 8th Annual AP District Honor Roll. To be included on the 8th Annual Honor Roll, we had to, since 2015, increase the number of students participating in AP while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher. Reaching these goals shows that this district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for AP. In 2017, more than 4,000 colleges and universities around the world received AP scores for college credit, advanced placement, or both, and/or consideration in the admissions process. Inclusion in the 8th Annual AP District Honor Roll is based on a review of three years of AP data, from 2015 to 2017, looking across 38 AP Exams, including world language and culture. The following criteria were used. Districts must: Increase participation/access to AP by at least 4% in large districts, at least 6% in medium districts, and at least 11% in small districts; Increased or maintained the percentage of American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students taking exams and increased or maintained the percentage of American Indian/ Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students scoring 3+ on at least one AP Exam; and Improve or maintain performance levels when comparing the 2017 percentage of students scoring a 3 or higher to the 2015 percentage, unless the district has already attained a performance level at which more than 70% of its AP students earn a 3 or higher. As you can see, in the span of 5 years, while the number of AP students has increased by 34%, the total percentage of students receiving a score of 3+ has only decreased by 1.5%. That is amazing! Capital High School staff continues to focus on essential standards and overall student learning during our weekly PLC time. We are also fortunate that we have staff members who are willing to add new AP courses. Finally, as I have reminded staff, the support and encouragement that they provide to students when they are faced with increased rigor is vital as well! This is great news for Capital High School as well as our district!
