4 GRADE K-12 ORIENTATION ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY WHERE VALUES MATTER Grades K-5: Friday, August 11th, 8:30am - 10:30am Students and parents may stop in to your Elementary Classrooms at your convenience, to meet your teacher and drop off school supplies. An invitation from your respective teachers will be mailed to you the week before Orientation. Grades 6-8: Friday, August 11th, 9:00am - 12:00pm Students should come dressed comfortably and appropriately for the school setting. The Orientation will be conducted by the Grades 6-8 Student Council along with a faculty advisor in the Multi Purpose Room (MPR), adjacent to the Administration Office. An overview from Secondary Principal, Steven Caley, will also be given during the session. Lunch will be provided. Who Should Attend: ALL Grade 6 students; ALL NEW Grades 7-8 students. Grades 9-12: Wednesday, August 9th, 9:00am - 12:00pm Students should come dressed comfortably and appropriately for the school setting. The Orientation will be conducted by members of the ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY National Honor Society along with a faculty advisor in the Multi Purpose Room (MPR), adjacent to the Administration Office. 5 BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE GRADE 5 BYOD PROGRAM ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY WHERE VALUES MATTER Grade 5 students are required to bring his or her own laptop computer to school every day as part of ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY s BYOD 1:1 program. BYOD is the common name for a Bring Your Own Device program in which families choose, given certain school guidelines, which laptop their student uses for school purposes on campus. There are many benefits to having our Grade 5 students be a part of the BYOD program. When students have access to their own laptops, they are better able to organize their school assignments and projects. Student communication and collaboration opportunities are made possible. BYOD also provides opportunities for students to learn appropriate use and responsibility, which will be important in properly preparing them for secondary school. Research skills are critical. With access to technology, students have access to information and resources to pursue areas of inquiry. Students won t need to switch between devices. They will become more adept and comfortable using their own technology so they work productively with their computer as a learning tool, rather than expend time and energy learning to use different devices. The students will use their mobile computers on a regular basis for: Word processing, internet research Using Google Apps for school-provided , word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations Reading, viewing, listening to, and interacting with websites Viewing online videos and other digital learning resources Accessing and using a multitude of Web 2.0 tools such as photo editing, video creation, podcasting, multimedia presentations, digital drawings, word collages, blogging Playing music Accessing the Internet to keep track of assignments, accessing learning resources and web links, submitting/ uploading files of completed school assignments, receiving feedback/comments/grades from teachers, checking for assignments during an absence Coding and 3-D design Because Grade 5 is the first year of BYOD program, and a learning experience, it is acceptable for the Grade 5 laptops to not meet all of the secondary school requirements for BYOD. This is mainly to allow students to bring in older family computers as they are learning to care for and use their own device. All Grade 5 computers should, however, meet the following requirements: Wifi Enabled Antivirus program installed and up to date (Avast is recommended and it s free) Power adapter brought to school daily Google Chrome installed to support Google Apps Carrying case If you are choosing to buy a new device for your child, please consider ALL of the requirements needed for future years. 6 SCHOOL UNIFORM INFORMATION ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY WHERE VALUES MATTER ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY UNIFORM GUIDELINES: Uniforms must be worn unless a student is given permission by administration to be out of uniform (i.e., free dress days, spirit days or May Day attire). Administrative approved out of uniform attire, should adhere to the general guidelines for hem length, cleanliness and quality, as well as, be appropriate to the school setting. All uniform purchases must be made through IPA s uniform provider, Lands End at Use Preferred School ID: Similar uniform bottoms to those found at LandsEnd.com may be purchased from other retail vendors, as long as they are in the style, color, length, fit and quality of Lands End items. 9 SPORTS OFFERED NAVIGATORS ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY WHERE VALUES MATTER ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY Navigator athletes compete in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH). The ILH consists of 25 member schools on Oahu. In addition to ILH competition, ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY athletes also have the opportunity to compete on the state level in HHSAA state championships. ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY presently fields 35 teams in 13 sports in the ILH. In addition to sports offering a school team, ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY also participates in PAC-5 athletics. PAC-5 is a system of co-op teams within the ILH comprised of 18 small independent schools to field teams that are not sustainable for small schools. This year IPA Athletic s have gone digital. To register for a sport, sign and upload documents, go to and set up an account for your athlete. 30 NEW STUDENTS ONLY Health Requirements and Forms ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY WHERE VALUES MATTER For families that are new to ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY please help us by having the following items completed and submitted to the Admission Office at ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY by July 31, Children coming from another public or private school: MUST request a Student Release Form so that his/her records are forwarded to ISLAND PACIFIC ACADEMY. The form should have been given to you by your child s current school on the last day of school. Children coming from a school in the state of Hawaii: MUST submit a copy of his/her current completed State of Hawaii DOE Student s Health Record Form 14. You do not have to complete a new form or have a new physical. Children coming from a mainland school or children who have not been previously enrolled in school in the state of Hawaii: MUST have a physical exam within one year before the first entrance into school in Hawaii. A U.S. Licensed physician must perform the exam and complete a State of Hawaii DOE Student s Health Record Form 14 (enclosed). The exam and Form 14 may be completed on the mainland prior to arrival, if it is more convenient. Children must have a Tuberculosis (TB) clearance completed within one year before the first entrance into school in the state of Hawaii. The results of new tests must be read, cleared and recorded on the Form 14 (see forms section of this guide) before the first day of school in August. This may be done at the same time the physical exam is performed. Please submit all completed forms to the Admission Office prior to your child s first day of school. Students who have not completed each of these requirements will NOT be permitted to enter school until the requirements are met. We currently service over 2,500 children per day and have 4 USDA certified kitchens strategically located across the island of Oahu to provide the most efficient, effective, and safe service. We try our best to accommodate most dietary limitations, and do not charge extra for them. Please advise us of any allergy requirements. We charge a flat rate for monthly service. There are no hidden fees, but in order for our Chef s to plan for and order the raw goods in advance, we do not offer any credits for missed lunches when your child does not enjoy the catered lunch (e.g., sick days). Exceptions may be made for extraordinary circumstances, but in general there are no refunds once an order has been placed.
