2 President s Corner Dear Friends of the IHSWCA As the final preparations for the wrestling season begins we all get very busy. We have to order supplies, recruit kids, fundraisers, schedule meets, schedule practices, schedule hotel stays. The list of to-do s never seems to end. We are spending the preseason either coaching a fall sport to get our wrestlers ready, or pushing them through grueling pre-season conditioning excersises so their bodies can sustain that grueling 4 month season. Something I advise you to do as a coach is rejuvenate yourself through doing some training of your own. By this, I mean, making sure your constantly educating yourself. While wrestling has been around for more than 3000 years, and the moves don t change drastically, it still has time to trend. Just in my 16 years of coaching I have seen the trend go from leg attacks and escapes, to defensive takedowns. In my opinion, know it all! But a great way to do this is to attend clinics, and not just a local one, but get out of town! Getting out of town for a clinic is a great way to have your pre-season coaches meetings to get everything set. It is a great bonding tool to take your coaches on a trip, and a dinner, and come back excited about all you learned together. I have taken my staff to a number of clinics around the country, I feel it keeps us in the know with the latest trends in techniques, it also keeps you and your program on a friendly level with the college coaches at those clinics. A few of the ones I have attended lately are as follows: 1) KY Wrestling Coaches clinic Last weekend Great venue at the Galt house, had Dennis Hall in as a speaker 2) Ohio State Clinic October 17-8 great clinic! Rabid wrestling fans everywhere, attendance is huge, and you get to watch OSU wrestle off s camps/m-wrestl-clinic-coaches.html 3) Olympic Training Center Fall Coaches Summit October spend a weekend at the OTC and learn from the best! This is a limited number clinic, and must be approved to attend through our ISWA/USAW organization you would contact me Danny Struck dstruck@gcs.k12.in.us for next years possibilities 4) FILA International Wrestling Clinic October the best from around the world attend this, at the end take a test for FILA Certification LAS VEGAS, Contact Cody Bickley at USA Wrestling 5) Wisconsin Coaches Clinic November 2nd one of the more heavily attended clinics, Mike Hagerty will be there, close to 500 coaches attend. 6) Pennsylvania Coaches Clinic October Coleman Scott, Cale Sanderson and more 7) NWCA Convention next July/ August - nwcawebsite/events/nwcaconvention. aspx It is VERY family friendly and you meet great people from around the country Wether you are a new or old coach, club coach, or high school coach, learning new techniques or learning new tricks to teach things you already know, going to clinics is a great way to revitalize your passion for the sport. Surround yourself with like minded people, and never stop learning!! It is my hope that we all experience the best wrestling seasons of our careers on and off the mat. Never Stop learning!! 7 Clinician Interview Clinician Jake Herbert How did you get into wrestling? My father wrestled. That s who got me into it. What was your high school career like? My high school career was great; 6, 3, 2, 1, worked hard to get 1 st PA state title. Freestyle wrestling is where I made my greatest strides. What was your college experience like? My college experience was great. I got a top 10 university education and competed in the Big Ten, the toughest wrestling division. Who was your biggest wrestling inspiration? I had many inspriations in wrestling including Kurt Angle because he is a Pittsburgh guy, Tig Moore because he is from my high school, my coaches Sean Bormet, and training partners Donny Pritzlor and Andy Hrovat. When did the dream of the Olympics begin? The dream of olymics began when I went overseas for the first time in 2006 for the University World Games and took a bronze medal. I only started wrestling freestyle in 2000 so not bad for only 5 summers of training freestyle. Scripps Howard News Service What do you think of the freestyle/ folk style controversy? No controversy. Both freestyle and folkstyle will teach you skills in the other style. They are both great styles of wrestling. What will you want to do when your competitive career is over? When I m done competing I hope my company, Double Leg Ninja, makes it easy for all coaches to order their wrestling gear so they can focus on the kids and practices. Can you give a summary of what you like to do in the weight room? In the weight room you need to do wrestling lifts. It does no good to lift 300 pounds once. You have to be able to lift your weight for 6 minutes straight. You should do a ton of pull ups, pulls, rows, and squats in high reps over long supersets. If you could give coaches some advice, to hopefully spur on future Jake Herbert s, what would you tell them? You want to know how to coach kids? There is a system Andy Hrovat and I are developing as we speak. If you are intrested in it talk to me about it. Team State IHSWCA set to host 2 nd annual classed team state duals Westfield High School will again be the site for the 2 nd Annual IHSWCA s Classed Team State Duals wrestling event during the season. Twenty-Four teams will once again converge on central Indiana for top notch competition by schools of all sizes. Last season, those in attendance were treated to the first Team State Duals tournament which was competitive, spirited and an overall success. Due to the shift in this school year s competition calendar, the event will take place after the holiday break on January 4, A (Large Division) Update There will be two new teams in the 3A field for this season s event. East Noble HS (Coach Keith Hoffar) and Warren Central (Coach Danny Williams) have broken into the lineup and look to make some noise. The other returning teams to this division include Bloomington South, Penn, Perry Meridian, Evansville Mater Dei, Cathedral and Franklin. Last year s champion for the 3A division was Perry Meridian. 2A (Middle Division) Update Six new schools have secured positions in this second annual event. They include Lebanon (Coach Derek Bocock), North Montgomery (Coach Maurice Swain), New Prairie (Coach Bobby Whitenack), Twin Lakes (Coach Ken Houston), Leo (Coach Josh Dommer) Continued on Page 8 7

8 Clinician Interview Mayabb on coaching experience How did you get into wrestling? I was in the 4th grade standing in Lunch line all 42 pounds of me when a put his hand on my shoulder and said you are going to wrestle, I said what? He said 4pm, I said I will be there, I call him every fathers day to say thank you What was your high school career like? Great experience outstanding learning and personal transformation, friends for life 2 x medalist. Finalist my Senior year we won the team title in Missouri. What was your college experience like? I went to University of Central Missouri wrestled for a Hall of Fame coach. 2x Team Captain, and NCAA Qualifier. Our team is still very close and we have won over thirty state titles as coaches. We were in each others weddings and constantly compete with one another Life changing experience. Who was your biggest wrestling inspiration? My college teammates Why Greco? I competed both styles in the 1980 Olympic Trials. In my junior year of college I dislocated my ankle could not defend a leg lace Only Greco for the next three Trial Cycles. Can you give a summary of what you like to do in the weight room? We run multiple cycles through out the year. Our hard lift Hypertrophy is during the late summer thru the Fall. Then Functional Strength Rep during wrestling season. In the Spring we lift hard Hypertrophy for a 50 days after season. During Freestyle-Greco Season we Crossfit If you could give coaches some advice to new coach s, what would you tell them? Get into your students, stay professional become a unique pillar for them. They do not need another friend but they desperately need an adult mentor that will share wisdom and demonstrate doing the right thing Wrestling is labor intensive and a long haul, give them your time and effort Continued From Page 7 and Western (Coach Chad Shepherd). The two returning teams to the middle division are Yorktown and Danville. Last year s champion for the 2A division was Yorktown. 1A (Small Division) Update The 1A division was extremely competitive in last year s event and it looks like it will again be full of excitement and good competition. 8 There will be three new squads in this division including West Central (Coach Kenny Nielsen), Clinton Central (Coach Austin Faulkner) and Fremont (Coach Eric Bryan). Rounding out the field for this season s 1A division include returning teams South Adams, South Putnam, Churubusco, Adams Central and Bremen. Last year s champion for the 1A division was Adams Central. TEAM STATE DUALS COMMITTEE The IHSWCA Team State Duals planning committee met on September 23 at Westfield High School. The committee addressed improvements to the event in the areas of fan seating, admissions, competition schedule, technology and Trackwrestling in addition to several other components of the event. It is the IHSWCA s intent to improve on last season s event in any areas that can be improved upon.

9 Football and Wrestling: warren central WC coach explains importance of wrestling If you want to watch wrestling in the fall, visit a Warren Central football game. Warren Central has displayed their dominance on the football field throughout the 21st century. The football program also shares similar names on Warren Central s wrestling roster. Since the 1980s, the wrestling program demonstrates another respectable program year-after-year. Wrestling coaches always try to figure out ways to convince football players to join their team and for football coaches to promote wrestling within their program. Warren Central is a prime example of two programs working together in a successful manner. Warren Central s head football coach, Jayson West, and I work great together and reap the benefits within our respective sports. Not only is Jayson West one of the best football coaches in Indiana, he was also a wrestling coach. Before taking over the football program at Warren Central, Jayson West led the Lawrence Central Bears to a A IHSAA state title. It is incredible to see what Coach West has done with our WC football program in just the beginning half of his first season. Coaching is about figuring out what other successful coaches have done and how they did it. If I was a high school football coach, I would spend time picking his brain. Q and A from Jayson West What do you miss the most about coaching wrestling? I really miss all of it! It was a nice change of pace from football. Although many athletes are similar or shared the demands are completely different, so it was fun to take on a new challenge and see what coaching styles would carry over or change. As one of the top football coaches in the state, why do you promote wrestling in your program? Wrestling is the toughest sport in the world in my opinion. Although it is a team sport on the scoreboard, it is an individual sport on the mat. No one can bail you out and you can t blame anyone else for your failures. It also has many principles that are needed for both sports such as toughness, athletic stances, the importance of strength (mentally and physically), and a double leg is a tackle and most wrestlers seem to be really good tacklers. What is some advice that you would give to other high school football and wrestling coaches in ways of sharing athletes? Both sports are very difficult on the athlete, so be intelligent with them in how you train them mentally and physically. They may fall in love with one over the other then flip flop back to loving the other. They are teenagers and they are trying to figure it out as well, so our job is to support them and make sure they represent both programs the proper way. In your opinion, how do wrestlers help your football program in terms of offense and defense? A football practice is usually pretty easy to wrestlers, but can be difficult to the player that has not wrestled. Wrestling practices are two hours of not much stopping with full resistance, where football has more natural breaks after resistance. Most wrestlers play defense since that is their nature (to take people down). If they do play offense, it just depends on their body type, but I love offensive linemen that wrestle because they are not afraid of contact, getting inside position and having great foot control. Additionally, why do you think some football coaches stray away from encouraging their players to wrestle? Wrestling is such a grind compared to when I was in school. The tournaments take a ton of Saturdays and the great programs like the one at WC have conditioning and practice demands that can collide with the high demands of the Continued on Page 10 9

10 Continued From Page 9 football program. Honestly, I really don t know many coaches that do not promote wrestling there are too many benefits. Three of the main standouts on both the gridiron and the mat for Warren Central are Maximilliano Hernandez, Katrell Moss, and Noah Perdue. All three student-athletes are returning state qualifiers, two of which placed. In my opinion, these three multisport athletes can play football or wrestle at the NCAA Division I level. Max Hernandez loves to compete and is a beast at both sports because he pays attention to detail. Hernandez stated, As far as technique goes, it really helps you with tackling. It teaches you to keep driving your feet and run through the tackle. Also, when you are wrestling, you are always using your hand. As a football player, especially a defense lineman, hands are essential to winning the battle upfront. The mental aspect learned through wrestling has increased Katrell Moss dominance on the gridiron. No matter the scenario, Moss believes in himself to always make a big play or stop. My experience in wrestling has helped me because once you wrestle, you can do anything. When you get tired, you learn how to control your breathing and recover quickly. It also give you are work ethic and mindset like nothing can stop you on the field or on the mat. Noah Perdue relies on his wrestling technique every play. Wrestling has a great effect on my tackling skills, I do a double leg or single leg takedown almost every time I make a tackle. Establish a good relationship with your football coach! It is ever more important due to the fact that a big man weight class has been added. Additionally, work hard to ensure that your football players enjoy competing and training for you. If done right, they do not need to be a successful wrestler by starting at a young age. The big guys do not need to be as technically sound as your lighter weights. Be careful pushing them to wrestle nonstop in the off season; most importantly, support their efforts on the football field and never make them choose one sport over the other. 16 Weight training Olympic Lifts Create Real Athletic Power The Problem Over the years there seems to be controversy about the best methods to training an athlete to be explosive and powerful. Coaches can make an impact on kids if they follow a routine for strength and conditioning that involves explosive exercises. The common theme between all sports is explosion. Wrestling is no exception. Some sports move in short distances, some far, some forward and backward, and some laterally. Despite what sport an athlete chooses, explosion is the common theme. Athletes need to be able to jump off the starting block in an explosive manner before swimming. Athletes need to be able to explode their arm from their ear while doing a shot put. Offensive lineman should be able to come off the ball and drive block in an explosive manner. Basketball players need to be able to make that jump to get a rebind as explosively as possible. Wrestlers need to be able to perform a double leg takedown explosively without the resistance of their opponent slowing them down. This research paper will discuss just that: Are explosive Olympic lifting routines such as the clean and jerk, or the snatch more or less effective than the traditional power lifting or body building routines given out by todays strength coaches? This paper will discuss the answer to this question as well as explain how Olympic lifting styles can improve the performance of athletes. This paper will use first hand accounts from a high schools strength and conditioning class using athletes from the 23 different sports that the high school offers, as well as research done by other professionals through journals, magazines, websites, and books. It is important to understand the difference between what working out with a goal of improved sports performance is (using Olympic lifts), as opposed to the traditional body building or power lifting methods that build the slow twitch muscles. Sports are about explosion, moving a weight or object (including your own body) with speed and control. This is what Olympic lifting styles are all about. This paper will be using studies performed by other strength coaches on the topic of Olympic lifting in sport performance, as well as studies and observations formed on my own. Review of the Literature Using Olympic lifts to promote explosion and general athleticism in athletes is important. Many athletes compete in more than one sport, and lift weights during class time due to having multiple sports after school. When an athlete only has 45 minutes or less to work out each week the power clean, hang clean, snatch, become important. Meaning Olympic lifting movements are extremely important! According to a study done by Bigger Faster Stronger a survey involving 13 Division I coaches found that 85 percent use Olympic lifting movements with their athletes. High School coaches should be pushing Olympic lifting to prepare their athletes for the next level. When that same study was used with the NFL over 88% of the teams were using Olympic Lifts (Goss BFS 2008)! In another study of Division III college football players, one group worked on power lifting, while the other group worked on Olympic lifts. Although both groups improved on their vertical leaps, the author of the study said, Results suggest that Olympic lifting can provide a significant advantage over power lifting in vertical jump performance changes. Vertical leap is a common measurement for judging athletic power (Goss BFS 2008). Why is this? Because there are basically two types of fast twitch muscle fibers. There are Type IIa and Type IIb. The type IIb fibers respond better to the power clean. Thus if you want a more functional muscle mass for sport, go toward Olympic Lifts! Something that helps an athlete be powerful/explosive is recruiting more muscle fibers into each athletic motion in their game or contest. The power clean does this. The central nervous system (CNS) plays a big role in training. The CNS controls the muscle fibers that are firing during that athletic event or motion. Through power cleans you can re-wire your CNS when springing, jumping, lifting, and adapt by recruiting more muscle fibers to meet the demands of the event. This is something trained in Power Cleans not in single joint exercises. Although back squats and deadlifts have a time and place, most athletes are training to be faster. There is much research done that says that the way you train a muscle is the way it will react in contest (The Strength Agenda April 2013). Therefore one should train for speed. It takes a fraction of the time to catch a snatch overhead, as it does for an elite power lifter to pull a deadlift off the ground. Power = force x velocity With that equation being what makes up power. It only makes since for an athlete to be training exercises that actually build power. Taking a weight and moving it fast! According to the The Strength Agenda, they break that equation down even more and remind you that Velocity=Mass x Acceleration. Meaning how fast can one move a weight over a distance. A snatch is taking that weight from ground to overhead as fast as possible. Great for an athlete! 17

17 The power clean is a time saver. To achieve a similar training effect with conventional exercises, an athlete would have to perform a leg press, back extension, calf raise, shoulder shrug, upright row, and bicep curl. Even after all that, they would still be missing a few muscles. For sports that have to save time, the power clean does this! Again, looking at the power Olympic lifting brings, in an article by Dresdin Archibald, Does the Power Clean or Power Snatch Train Speed?, Olympic lifts build power. Power cleans recruit so much of the body, and so much of the nervous system, that when trained properly the power clean will increase in weight and therefore strength. Power is the product of force (or strength). Some critics of Olympic lifts state that they rely on momentum at their finish and therefore do not exercise the muscles in a full range of motion. But remember, when training athletes, you are training for explosive power. However full force is not required in most athletic skills. Most athletic skills also rely on momentum. Dresdin gives the example of a quarterback. He says A quarterback does not put as much force onto a pass as it leaves his had as he did when cocking it at his shoulder. It s moving too fast at that point to do that. Some critics will say that Olympic lifts are not perfectly specific to ne or another athletic movement. Dresdin also addresses this by saying. A power clean does not have to be exactly the same as a volleyball jump, a high jump, a shot put or whatever. It is similar enough that a desired training effect can be experienced. It is also important to practice specific sporting skills. We don t get to ignore our other training responsibilities and then blame weight training for the resultant shortcomings in our athletic skills. Olympic lifts are a great part to the equation, but athletes still have to practice! Not only do Olympic lifts, specifically Power Cleans, improve your explosive power, but according to a study don by the Journal of Strength and Conditioning, explosive exercises have the greatest tendency to overcome the body s ability to remove lactate. What does that mean for an athlete? The researchers of the article speculated that when you overload the lactate removal system on a regular basis, that your body improves the ability to express power when in a state of high levels of lactate. Greg Shepherd, the president of Bigger Faster Stronger, stated in an article The Throwers and the Power Clean, I would say that the huge majority of the top 100 throwers in the world in any of the throwing events over the last 30 years have made the Power Clean or similar movement a top priority exercise. The reason is simple: Cleans had and have to be done or you can t compete. Even awesome genetics doesn t seem to matter. Doing heavy cleans with great technique over a period of time develops world class explosive power. According to studies done by Bigger Faster Stronger many coaches have been reluctant to incorporate it into their training programs due to the fact that they are getting many of their philosophies from companies that sell machines. Then coaches that buy those machines spread the idea further. Some coaches said that power cleans were dangerous. However a study done in the UK found that the in fury rate for competitive weightlifting was a.0017 rate! The authors of that study noted that in a competition they tracked over 18 years had 54,600 competitors. In this period one boy had a concussion when he fell onto a weight after lifting it. Another injury occurred when a boy dropped a weight on his back. In neither case was there a long-term consequence. In short, there is no rational reason to stay away from power cleans for injury reasons. Furthermore a study done by the Air Force Academy in 1989 with their offensive and defensive lineman found a mathematical relationship between performance on the field and the weight room. It found that out of the following exercises: Power Clean, Push press, squat, Vertical jump, forty yard dash, bench press, incline press, shuttle run, and box jumps; that the power clean out performed all exercises on the field. Bill Stewart, the Air Force Academy front line coach at the time said that the power clean is appropriately named because it develops power. Power is the ability to produce strength rapidly that makes on faster! While reading these studies done by Bigger Faster Stronger and the Air Force Academy, one just can t help but get excited that they are on the right track using Olympic lifts to build explosive power within their high school athletes. Summary In just a few months of Olympic lifting, it will be evident the differences in vertical leap, box jumps and 40 yard dashes. I believe that kids will start commenting not only on their in contest performance, but just on a better feeling of well being. Coaches will be happy and become believers of Olympic lifts when they see the improvements shown through testing, and in contest. When using Olympic lifts in a wrestling setting coaches will find that their athletes are much more explosive and less accident prone than ever before. Take the time to learn these lifts (Power Clean and Jerk, Snatch, and all their variations) to take your athletes to the next level.
