2 Message from Admin Team Welcome back from holidays! This newsletter marks a new beginning and an ending with an exciting bang! While some doors open and some doors close, it s always an exciting time at Westmount! We are beginning the new calendar year with a rousing look ahead to second semester which starts on Monday, February 6. It s only three weeks away, and it marks the beginning of the second half of the school year. We, at Westmount, like to end our first semester with excitement. This week, our Grade 12 Arts Westmount students starred in an extraordinary performance of Arthur Miller s play, The Crucible. Not even Broadway compares to our performances! Ah, yes! Westmount s «name is good in the village!» If you missed those performances, be sure to see the Arts Westmount Dance Show on Monday, January 16 and Tuesday, January 17. The performances begin at 7:30 pm. Don t forget our Music Department s Winterfest on January 24. The curtain rises as 7 pm! This was held over from the December performance, cancelled due to inclement weather. For our Grade 9 applied and academic math students, they will be ending their semester with the Grade 9 EQAO math assessment on Wednesday, January 18 and Thursday, January 19. The WCI administration wishes them lots of luck. Be sure to have a good breakfast on both of those days, and get a good night s sleep both evenings before the testing. Eating well and sleeping well are two ingredients that «add up» to a healthy mind! All of our students will be writing their final exams, beginning Thursday, January 26 and ending Wednesday, February 1. The schedule is attached, posted on the school website and all students received a detailed version on Monday, January 9. All students must write their exams on the scheduled date. 3 Student Choreography Showcase 2017 Tickets will be going on sale the first week of January. Student matinee is FREE January 18, Period 2. Westmount Entertainment Presents Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" In the rigid world of Salem, Massachusetts, rumours that women are practising witchcraft galvanize the town. In a searing portrait of a community engulfed by panic with ruthless prosecutors, and neighbours eager to testify against neighbor, The Crucible famously mirrors the anticommunist hysteria that held the United States in its grip in the 1950s. Join us January 11-13, 2017, 8:00 PM at the Vaughan City Playhouse for an amazing performance of this American Classic. School and group matinees are available January 11 and 13 at 9:30 am. westmountarts@hotmail.com for more information. Winterfest The NEW date for Winterfest is Tuesday, January 24, PM. The Waterloo Math Contests are a great way for students to have fun while developing their mathematical problem solving skills. Westmount will be hosting the Pacal (Grade 9), Cayley (Grade 10) and Fermat (Grade 11) contests on Feburary 28, Each contest is open to any student in the corresponding grades, even if you are taking math during 2nd semester. Students can register for their respective contest by paying the registration fee of $5.00 via School Cash Online. 4 Monday, January 16 Meditation Monday - During period 3, the grade 12 Phys Ed. Leadership class will be hosting a lunch hour of stress relief. Activities to include Tai Chi, Yoga and colouring. Varsity Girls Volleyball - St. Lewis SS - Hamilton, Wodlinger Tuesday January 17 Bully Prevention Day - Students are asked to wear blue and join in the fun for a lunch time concert to stop bullying Wednesday, January 18 Jersey Day - Show your pride and wear your team s colours. Come to the gym during period 3 and participate in sports activities. Varsity Girls Volleyball - Langstaff SS - Wodlinger, Hamilton Sr. Boys Basketball - Alex. Mackenzie - Madill Friday January 20 CPR Day - Students will have the opportunity to come to the gym and test out their skills or learn a quick overview of what to do in an emergency situation.

5 Your Guidance Team Update Semester 2 Timetable Changes All grade 11 and 12 requests for a timetable change will take place in semester 2, starting on Tuesday, Feb. 7.
