We run for the health of it mind, body, and soul. To measure miles in smiles. At New York Road Runners, we ve been helping and inspiring people through running since 1958.

4 Dear Friends and Supporters, INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION We share this incredible year with all our members, supporters, participants, partners, staff, and Board of Directors. We achieved expansive growth in our youth programs, which benefited more than 215,000 kids nationally, including 115,000 in NYC, throughout the year. Our Mighty Milers ran an extraordinary nearly six million miles, and our 3,000 Young Runners raced on roads, trails, and tracks to reach personal bests. We are proud to lead the way in youth wheelchair racing with a series of clinics, and continue to create opportunities and open doors for these athletes. New initiatives such as the NYRR Youth Invitational at the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon helped to further highlight and integrate youth within the sport of distance running. Thanks to the generosity of partners and donors, more than 3,800 kids received free pairs of running shoes as part of the NYRR Sneaker Closet, and we can t wait to increase that number in the upcoming year. REACHING THE FINISH LINE TOGETHER We celebrated each of the 430,000 youth and adult runners we served throughout the year. Perhaps the best representation of the powerful impact runners can generate when coming together is our record-breaking 2015 TCS New York City Marathon Team for Kids runners raising $5.5 million for our youth programs. This is a part of the total $33.9 million raised across all official charity partners. This year, we worked hard to broaden our free community running offerings and deepen our five-borough roots. We launched Open Run, which works with local volunteer leaders to bring free weekly runs to neighborhood parks, and our Race Free program provided complimentary entries to those in need. Runner offerings and experiences continued to be our major focus in Fiscal Year 16. We expanded the NYRR Five-Borough Series events to include 5K runs at the NYRR Bronx 10-Mile and NYRR Staten Island Half, and launched our new on-demand number system to make number pickup more efficient. Thank you for all the support as we continue to evolve the process! LOOKING AHEAD Like our runners, we continue to challenge ourselves to reach new personal bests, and we are excited to expand our impact on the running community in the year ahead. 6 RUN We run to share the joy of running Mighty Milers is designed to get kids moving, and to help build self-esteem by teaching them how to set and reach goals. The program is based on a turnkey approach that relies on a dedicated staff member or volunteer to lead the program, with the goal of having each Mighty Miler complete 26.2 miles during the school year. We go the extra mile so the kids can, too! 8 RUN FOR LIFE 9

7 Laura Eisenzopf MIGHTY MILERS PROGRAM DIRECTOR, DISTRICT 75 SCHOOLS MIGHTY MILERS BY THE NUMBERS NATIONWIDE, NYRR MIGHTY MILERS REACHED 3,800+ Laura Eisenzopf, right A marathon in the school year is what Laura Eisenzopf encourages her students to accomplish, and when they do the feeling of success is profound. Laura is a physical therapist and the Mighty Milers director at a District 75 school for kids with disabilities in Queens. She brought the program to the school with the support of the teachers as part of a movement initiative, but the benefits and teaching opportunities extend way beyond that: We talk about food, we talk about staying healthy, we teach life skills some kids learned about money with the rewards program! A marathoner herself, Laura knows the effort it takes to push yourself harder and farther than you thought possible. When these kids see their progress on the classroom wall, when they run, walk, or roll on the same track as all the other kids, and when they wear the same T-shirt as the other students, they feel like they ve accomplished something, just like anybody else. Hard-pressed to choose one favorite thing about the Mighty Milers program, Laura says it s the inclusion, the fact that on the days they go to the races you can t tell the difference between her kids and any of the others: It s wonderful that they get to do the same thing on the same day on the same track and get the same stuff. 8 RUN We run to grow leaders Run for the Future is a free training program that teaches the sport of running to young women about to enter their senior year of high school. None have prior running experience. They receive free running gear, complete a gait analysis, take nutrition, health, and leadership seminars, and of course, train, train, train. Through their participation in the program, the young women learn about running, build self-esteem and confidence, and develop key leadership skills, while training for the Percy Sutton Harlem 5K race, which takes place at the end of the summer. Participants who complete the program and are accepted to college also receive a $1,500 scholarship toward the school of their choice. 12 RUN FOR LIFE 13

9 Linda Sanchez and Greg Ho RUN FOR THE FUTURE DONORS RUN FOR THE FUTURE BY THE NUMBERS Linda Sanchez would be the first to tell you she was not a runner. But that was before she went to walk the Percy Sutton Harlem 5K and saw everyone else running and decided to go for it. In 2015 her husband, Greg Ho, encouraged her to do it again, and it seems she s hooked. It s a healthy activity and I love the outdoors aspect of it, says Linda. Greg himself was a runner in college before injuries stopped him in his tracks. He put his shoes back on eight years ago and immediately started to feel the tremendous health impact of training for the marathon. Since then he s run 20 marathons and inspired people to run their own first marathons. When Greg and Linda look for organizations to support, they look for ones that are efficient at what they re doing. They recognize the effort, the dedication, and the logistical triumphs that go into providing the benefits that reach all New Yorkers. In particular, they feel the Run for the Future program is amazingly well run and provides a lot to the young women who participate including a $1,500 college scholarship. But NYRR expects a lot from the women themselves, and they get it. A lot of leadership is being learned and practiced. Watching the families celebrate after the race, Greg says, you realize how important this is to them especially the scholarship. 10 RUN We run to build community NYRR Open Run is a new community running program that launched in 2015 to bring free weekly runs and walks to local neighborhood parks in all five boroughs. This initiative is a collaboration between community leaders, volunteers, and NYC Parks Community Parks Initiative. We believe nothing should stop a person from getting the healthy long-term benefits of running: Not financial status. Not location. Not the color of your shoes. All ages, dogs, cats, and strollers are welcome. 16 RUN FOR LIFE 17

11 Esther Sung-Eschenauer and Don Eschenauer NYRR OPEN RUN RACE DIRECTORS/VOLUNTEERS It was his-and-hers stress fractures that really propelled Esther Sung-Eschenauer and Don Eschenauer forward in their volunteering for NYRR. After having volunteered to satisfy the 9+1 program for the TCS New York City Marathon, they knew helping out on a more frequent basis would be a great way to stay connected to the running community while they healed. Esther will tell you, anyone who has run in a race but has never volunteered has no idea how much work goes into putting on every race (not just the marathon!). The volunteers want the runners to have a great time, and enjoy the experience. For Esther and Don to know that they helped make these things possible is a great feeling. Says Don, It s amazing how far a high five and great job! and here s some water will go. Through their volunteering at the Open Run, they ve seen firsthand the way different people who otherwise never would have met become their own community united by shared goals and positive energy. United by running. From a first exhilarating volunteer experience at last year s marathon to volunteering throughout the year to becoming Open Run Directors in Brooklyn Bridge Park, Esther and Don are thrilled to have been able to give back to the organization that helped them grow as runners. 13 RUN We run to use it and not lose it NYRR Striders is a program that offers free walking sessions every week to senior adults. It aims to improve attitudes toward exercise, to make running and walking more accessible, and, ultimately, to increase participation of older adults in NYRR events year round. NYRR Striders participate in events throughout the five boroughs like the NYRR Washington Heights Salsa, Blues, and Shamrocks 5K, Run as One Health Walk Presented by JPMorgan Chase, Global Running Day, and the Percy Sutton Harlem Walk. We believe it s never too late to get fit. 22 RUN FOR LIFE 23

14 Susan Rowels NYRR STRIDER NYRR STRIDERS BY THE NUMBERS 1,349 SENIORS ENROLLED IN THE NYRR STRIDERS PROGRAM Five years ago, Susan Rowels stepped into a health fair at Harlem Hospital and began a journey toward health and enlightenment. NYRR was just starting the Striders program and looking for its first group of participants. She doesn t remember exactly what they said to persuade an over-300-pound version of herself to participate; but it worked. With three weekly walks in Upper Manhattan (Central Park, Morningside Park, and Marcus Garvey Park), Striders is designed to be easily accessible to all. That said, Susan is a bit of an overachiever: She attends all three, every week. But it s more than just the walking that keeps her coming back because, as she says, It s a 360 program. Each session is energizing and informative. Striders are treated to special speakers who teach them about nutrition and how to eat healthy and even take them to neighborhood restaurants and farmers markets to show them how to easily incorporate these learnings into their own lives. Beyond the physical health promoted by the program, NYRR Striders has created a real sense of community among the participants. Five years later, and down almost 100 pounds, Susan is very thankful for NYRR. The Striders program has had such a monumental impact on her life that she honestly doesn t know where she would be today without it. 15 RUN We run so everyone can We started adding youth wheelchair fields to some of our key events, like the NYRR 5th Avenue Mile, TCS Run with Champions, and Times Square Kids Run at the United Airlines NYC Half. Kids with physical disabilities were able to compete right alongside their able-bodied peers. Pro runners and wheelchair athletes were there to offer support and cheer them on. When it comes to making running accessible to all, we believe there are no limits. 26 RUN FOR LIFE 27

16 OVER 50 RACES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR RUN We run to get hearts beating Whatever your distance, we have a race for you. In fact, we offer over 50 races throughout the year. However you move walk, run, roll, whatever way you measure miles or K s, everyone can take advantage of the sport in so many ways. And, this year, we turned back time with the NYRR Retro 4-Miler, got festive during the Jingle Bell Jog, got social with the NYRR R-U-N 5K, earned some medals with the NYRR Team Championships, and went long and strong with the NYRR NYC 60K. 28 RUN FOR LIFE 29

17 RUN We run from one end of the city to the other New York Road Runners had a few firsts this year. In both the Staten Island and the Bronx Five-Borough Series events, we held our first 5K s. The NYRR Staten Island 5K welcomed over 1,000 runners and the NYRR Bronx 5K over 1,200. Running in the outer boroughs has never been more accessible. Or more fun! 31

20 RUN We run to set the course From Central Park to the outer reaches of Queens, across bridges, under walkways, over hills, dales, and rivers, the TCS New York City Marathon builds community. It takes a city of eight million people and turns it into a huffing, puffing, cheering course lined with enthusiasm and dedication. Since 1976 this course has been the culmination of training, coordination, and alternate routes for transportation thanks to the many New York City agencies that work with us to put on this massive five-borough-wide event, with 50,000 finishers, in a city that never slows down. 36 RUN FOR LIFE 37

22 RUN We run for the thrill of it NYRR YOUTH INVITATIONAL NYRR Youth Invitational is about building strength and confidence. Nearly 600 youth athletes ran 1.8 miles of the famed TCS New York City Marathon course, crossing the official finish line in Central Park. After the race, everyone was pumped. All received a finisher medal, with a side of self-esteem. AT THE 40 RUN FOR LIFE 41

23 RUN We run with purpose 8,700+ RUNNERS 300+ CHARITIES TOTAL FUNDS RAISED $33,900,000 The TCS New York City Marathon stretches beyond the finish line. Over 8,700 runners ran to raise money to support charities of their choosing. This trend went beyond the everyman, to celebrities like Alicia Keys, who supported Keep a Child Alive, a charity she co-founded to fight against HIV/AIDS. Retired tennis player James Blake ran in support of The James Blake Foundation to fund cancer research. Ethan and Ryan Hawke raised funds and awareness for The Doe Fund, which helps break the cycle of homelessness, addiction, and criminal recidivism. At NYRR, we believe that part of coming together as a community is being able to improve our communities for all of us. 42 RUN FOR LIFE 43

24 RUN We run to change the world NYRR Team for Kids is a group of runners of all levels who get professional training and guaranteed entry into premier endurance events, in return for fundraising for our youth programs. We re talking events like the NYRR Five-Borough Series, the TCS New York City Marathon, and all of the Abbott World Marathon Majors events. The TCS New York City Marathon Team for Kids team raised more than $5.5 million in Making a difference one mile at a time. When these adults run to raise funds so kids can live healthier lives through NYRR s free running programs, everybody wins. 44 RUN FOR LIFE 45

25 Tom Daniels NYRR TEAM FOR KIDS ALUMNUS AND NYRR DONOR A lifelong runner, Tom Daniels had naturally come to know NYRR through living in the city. So when New York Road Runners approached him about becoming more involved on a corporate level (and involving his employer, Spencer Stuart), he didn t hesitate the global executive search firm has a built-in running culture. Their first partnership was at a Mighty Milers Fun Run on Randall s Island. That led to more youth events throughout the city and let them truly understand and appreciate the amazing work that NYRR does within our community. Because of a mutual interest in promoting health, nutrition, and running, especially with children, Tom rallied the troops at Spencer Stuart and formed a group to support the NYRR Team for Kids program at the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon. The end result was nothing short of spectacular, with 40 runners participating from 22 offices, 12 countries, and five continents. Runners came from Argentina, Hong Kong, Belgium, China, Singapore, and elsewhere, not only because of a love of running but also because of a shared belief in the importance of NYRR Team for Kids. They raised over $165,000, and in the process a wealth of camaraderie. From lifelong runners to people who were completely new to running, Tom led a diverse group of people whose stories of pride, perseverance, and friendship will be shared for years to come. By supporting the mission of NYRR Team for Kids in teaching self-confidence, teamwork, and support of one another, this adult team relearned those lessons through the experience themselves. As for Tom, he doesn t plan on slowing down anytime soon and he, his wife, and their two children will be running this year s TCS New York City Marathon together Tom s seventh in NYC. 27 Nnenna Lynch NYRR BOARD MEMBER Running has held a special place in Nnenna Lynch s life over the course of 35 years. And though the motivations behind each step have changed, the sport has always remained relevant and important to her. Nnenna joined the organization because she was impressed by what it does and who they are, and has been a member of the NYRR Board of Directors since She appreciated the focus on youth programs and the interest in growing them aggressively. Starting young had a profound impact on her life, and she wanted to be a part of an organization that brought that gift to a large audience. NYRR is in 37% of NYC elementary and middle schools, but Nnenna has bigger plans. She says she d like to serve every kid in NYC! Inspired by being a part of a group of executives and board members that are constantly asking themselves how they can do things better and make them more special, from races to events, marathons to youth programs and jamborees, Nnenna considers NYRR her personal ecosystem of strivers people trying to do better personally and professionally. For Nnenna, running is a great metaphor for life. She says, It s really about putting one foot in front of the other. The lessons I ve learned from running serve me every day. 31 Julie and Allan Caldwell NYRR DONORS Julie and Allan Caldwell have built running into every aspect of their lives. For Julie the journey actually began by rolling, when she pushed a friend in the Achilles Hope & Possibility event in The incredible spirit of community and celebration she felt that day changed everything and she s been running ever since. In fact, she and Allan have run every TCS New York City Marathon since 2013 and they show no sign of slowing down. Both NYC transplants, Julie and Allan say that running has helped connect them to the city. From the ritual of regular runs, to races that take them to corners of New York they would have never otherwise seen, to introducing them to friendships that extend well beyond the race, NYRR is at the center of everything that makes them call New York home. Devoted members of the NYRR community, they are donors of both money and time, and Julie feels that it s only natural considering the difference NYRR has made in her own life: she s lost over 50 lbs, PR ed in 22 out of 30 races, and made so many new friends inside and outside of the organization because of her involvement. That said, they are also deeply appreciative of the effect the organization has on the community at large, an impact that they ve seen firsthand. Promoting lifestyle, fitness, and personal achievement without judgment, NYRR is out there and accessible week after week, for young and old, welcoming all levels and abilities, and that s something we all can get behind.
