The University of Calgary picture could not be complete without you, our donors. We stand here worldrenowned researchers and teachers, committed staff, inspired students, inspirational student-athletes, and students of tomorrow (UofC day care kids, today) to represent the community your giving supports, now and in years to come. Thank you for trusting us, and for contributing to the bigger picture we want to create while graduating leaders, conducting top-notch research, and giving back to our community. - Dr. Elizabeth Cannon President and Vice-Chancellor University of Calgary

Do you ever wonder how giving to the University of Calgary influences the bigger picture? This year, your choice to give to us helped: Decrease student debt Enhance classroom and student spaces Influence public policy Build buildings Create new knowledge to fight disease Make international study a reality Discover new ways of thinking, doing and innovating Reward and foster academic, athletic and research excellence Your gifts create an opportunity for all of us to make a difference. Thank you for being part of the bigger picture.

SUPERFUND, SUPER DONORS 21st century students need 21st century classrooms. Each year, the Annual Giving Superfund appeal pools the contributions of alumni and friends to fund an area of need on campus. Since 2009, 2,897 Superfund donors raised $309,000 of its $330,000 goal to renovate classrooms such as this one, updating technology and resources so students like Lara Ahmed (left) can learn in the latest and greatest ways.

INDUSTRY RESEARCH SUPPORT Faculty at the University of Calgary have enjoyed collaboration with Alberta Sulphur Research Ltd. (ASRL) and its industrial member companies for almost 50 years. Thanks to member donations, the establishment of an endowed chair will ensure the industry continues to benefit from the unique fundamental and applied research carried out by graduate students and faculty members at ASRL, says Dr. Rob Marriott, seated with Professor Peter Clark (right), technical director, ASRL.

FACULTY & STAFF GIVING At the University of Calgary, our faculty and staff understand the importance of giving. Dr. George Kurian, sociology professor emeritus, and managing editor, Journal of Comparative Family Studies, and his wife, Dr. Susannah Kurian, have established a doctoral scholarship with a high academic standing. It s important to me that, as faculty members, we recognize the hard work our students put into their studies, says George. This award is one way for me, as their professor, to show that I see and appreciate their efforts. Here, 2009 and 2010 award recipients Michal Kofman and Annette Teslie thank Susannah (far left) and George.

UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY THANKS UAC ALUMNI Before the University of Calgary became an independent institution in 1966, it was a satellite campus named the University of Alberta, Calgary (UAC). In , 1,394 proud UAC alumni donated more than $13,000 in support of the students of today and tomorrow. To these and all alumni who choose to give back thank you.

A GRAND FIRST GRAD AWARD Alberta s only veterinary college, University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine accepted its first doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) students in In 2010, it celebrated another milestone the college s first graduate scholarship. Sulochana Krishnakumar, an international PhD student doing bovine reproduction research, was the worthy recipient, shown here at the Spy Hill campus.

CREATING A LASTING LEGACY Professor, mentor and respected colleague, Dr. Andy Younger, was a pioneer in the natural gas processing industry. When he died in 2005, his colleagues wanted a named research chair established in his honour. To date, they ve raised nearly $2 million. Thanks to our donors, Dr. Younger s legacy will live on at the University of Calgary, says chair Dr. Marco Satyro (left) with chair champion, alumnus and donor, Rick Sukovieff.

COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER When former Social Work dean, Dr. Gayla Rogers (left), retired in 2010, 180 of her colleagues, friends and family came together to recognize her university and community contributions, creating the Dr. Gayla Rogers Legacy Medal in Graduate Social Work. MSW Graduate Chelsea Phillpotts received the inaugural award for highest academic standing while showing strong leadership and community commitment, following Gayla s example.

HEALTHY STUDENT SUPPORT FROM MD ALUMNI The Faculty of Medicine began naming its classes in 1975, after a frustrated professor called his MD class a bunch of turkeys. The name stuck and so did the tradition. The turkeys named the class of 76 the beavers; the beavers, in turn, named the class of 77 the toads, and so on. Thirty-five years later, the MD Menagerie supports today s medical students in unique ways, such as raising bursary funds through reunion challenges and annual appeals.

GIVING BEYOND BORDERS In 2010, the University of Calgary-Qatar gave out its first student awards to 13 appreciative students. Established in 2007, the school exists to enrich health and wellness in Qatar and the Gulf region through world-class education and nursing leaders and practitioners. Afrah Saleh Ali (left) received the President s Award for Excellence in Student Leadership. I was so excited when I heard I d won, I even cried. I am very thankful for the recognition, she says. It was the first such award ever granted a nurse in the Middle East. I am proud of that.

COMMITMENT TO HEALTH CARE RESEARCH Turning pain and confusion into action, Calgary philanthropists Jeanne Keith- Ferris and Don Ferris helped create the Centre for Digestive Motility in 2008, after their two children experienced debilitating pain and nausea following an infection. Their support of researching illnesses affecting the nerves and muscles of the gut will bring much-needed insight and relief for sufferers. The groundbreakers continue to support the centre, having made another significant gift to the centre in 2010.

ADOPT-A-DINO In , 392 donors raised $283,000, adopting more than 300 Dinos as part of the Adopt-a-Dino program, ensuring student athletes could focus solely on maintaining their academic and athletic success. The Adopt-a-Dino program helps me personally, and the team, says adopted women s varsity hockey player, Shannon Davidson (right). The funding helps offset the team s costs and lets us be more competitive on and off the ice.
