1 School Newsletter December 2015 Dear Parent It is at this time of year when we often think where has the time gone? It seems only a very short time since we returned after the summer break and here we are, about to celebrate Christmas. Welcome Throughout this term our pupils have been very busy and achieved much. One of the highlights was Prize Night when we celebrated the achievements of the Class of 2015 and indeed the past 50 years. It was wonderful to be joined by so many of our past Head Girls and Head Boys on that occasion and to reflect on the positive impact City of Armagh High School has had, and continues to have, on its pupils both past and present. I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a joyful Christmas and a peaceful New Year. D Livingstone Principal Designed by Roneta Talmontaite (Year 10) Craft Fair A very successful and enjoyable Craft Fair took place on Saturday 05 December. Although the weather was extremely poor it was good to see so many attend. We want to thank the Parents Support Group, pupils and staff for all their hard work it is very much appreciated. Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence, Opportunity and Care.

2 New Hockey Pitch We are very pleased that our all-weather pitch is currently being resurfaced and improved. This represents a considerable financial investment by the Education Authority and reflects its confidence in the work at City of Armagh High School. The refurbishment should be completed mid-january; the PE Department will be delighted when it is finished so that they can resume their normal sporting activities. SHINE at Scripture Union The Ice Cream Factory was a big hit at Scripture Union. It was the third week of representatives from Crown Jesus Ministries and Scripture Union asking us to QUESTION MARK. Each pupil in school was given a copy of the Gospel of Mark and asked to read a chapter a night. The reps included students on their gap year who were able to enjoy games and interacting with our students. Website The school website is currently under construction. We are working closely with a local company to design a new userfriendly website that will be beneficial for current and prospective parents and also incorporate social media. Maths There will be an interhouse draughts competition in the New Year so get practising!

7 Year 8 attended a Poetry Workshop which was organised by the Navan Centre and Fort in Armagh. They were able to take part in a Poetry Writing Workshop with the resident poet Maura Johnston. In the second session of the workshop they were able to meet a real life Viking where Sam Dickson learned how to wield a Viking sword. Dylan Hazelton was set upon by Emma Morrison and the Viking but thankfully he still lives to tell the tale! Year 8 s Poetry Workshop Rachel Irwin was taught how to use a bow and arrow. The Viking was very impressed with her skills but Daniel McCarthy nearly met his end as he was chosen to be sacrificed to give thanks to the Viking gods. The theme of the workshop was light and the Year 8s were able to learn how the Vikings used light to guide them on their missions. Finally they were able to learn how light was used in World War Two. They did their best to hide the light so that the Germans wouldn t bomb the cities. Emma, Rachel and Ethan were able to experience life in a bomb shelter and how nerve-wracking it could be when the air raid siren went off. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by the Year 8s. When the students returned to school they entered their poems into the competition organised by the Poetry Workshop. Jodie Russell and Dylan Hazelton were worthy winners and they recited their poem on a Poetry Night at the Navan Centre and Fort. Congratulations!
