2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission The mission of Communities In Schools is to surround students with a community of support empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Background Communities In Schools (CIS) of Virginia is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization established in CIS of Virginia believes keeping children in school is the responsibility of the entire community. Rather than duplicating services or competing with other youth-serving organizations or agencies, CIS identifies and mobilizes existing community resources and fosters cooperative partnerships for the benefit of students and families. CIS of Virginia works with its local affiliates and communities to bring a coordinated team of volunteers, skilled staff and other resources directly into CIS schools. Today, CIS is the national leader in school-based, integrated student support services. Independent research shows that CIS is the only organization in America that decreases dropouts and increases graduation rates when its model is implemented with fidelity (K-12). Impact Formed two new CIS affiliates: Communities In Schools of Petersburg and Communities In Schools of The New River Valley Communities In Schools of Virginia became nationally accredited. Provided technical assistance and support for our new regional affiliates to become fully operational and sustainable programs. Received funding from the General Assembly to continue growing our Communities In Schools Regional Affiliates in Hampton Roads, Northern VA and Southwest VA, and to begin developing a new program in Petersburg, VA. Increased the amount of students served through CIS in Virginia by 25% this year. Raise additional private funds to support continued replication of the CIS Model in underserved areas of the Commonwealth. Through data research and evaluation, Communities In Schools of Virginia developed a software tool for use in Richmond for determining the early indicators for at-risk students. Using Richmond as a pilot, CIS site coordinators throughout the Commonwealth have been trained and will be using this tool beginning in September, Needs Raise an additional $500,000 in private funding to provide technical assistance and support to new regional Communities In Schools affiliates in Virginia, and to our established Communities In Schools affiliates; updating and maintaining our website; building capacity to more effectively provide programmatic and administrative support to our local and regional affiliates; and, assure continued organizational sustainability. 2
3 CEO/Executive Director Statement The school year was a historic one for CIS of Virginia. We served over 30,000 students in 59 schools, established a new affiliate, and successfully completed an intense accreditation process. Since receiving state funding in 2012, CIS of Virginia has more than doubled its reach and impact across the state. Due to the success of CIS of Virginia s most recent replication efforts in Northern Virginia, Southwest Virginia, and Hampton Roads, the current administration not only supported our on going work in our newer regional affiliates, but also encouraged us to enter the challenging area of Petersburg. CIS of Virginia responded to the state s call to action, and quickly began the process of establishing CIS of Petersburg in the fall of I am happy to report that CIS of Petersburg, with support from The Cameron Foundation, will be serving students in two schools within its first year. As a result, CIS of Virginia continues to have a good working relationship with the General Assembly and we are hopeful they will support future expansion and replication efforts. I am also excited to introduce Quentin Brown as our new state director. Quentin has been with CIS for more than 10 years first as a site coordinator and program director at CIS of Richmond and most recently as executive director of CIS of Hampton Roads. His knowledge of our organization is invaluable and I am confident in his ability to strengthen our network and broaden our impact. Communities In Schools of Virginia continues to meet the diverse needs of underperforming students across the entire state. I am proud of what we have accomplished in and look forward to celebrating our continued success in the coming year. Mark E. Emblidge, Ph.D. 3
4 Board Chair Statement With more than 7,000 students failing to graduate onetime in Virginia each year, the work of Communities In Schools (CIS) could not be more relevant and essential. CIS of Virginia has played an integral role in addressing this statewide problem by providing integrated services to students who lack the resources and support that allow them to stay in school and achieve in life. This past year, the CIS of Virginia Board of Directors, along with the CIS of Virginia staff, worked tirelessly calling on key corporate, education, legislative and community leaders to increase awareness of CIS and raise the necessary funds for expanding our reach to the students and families most in need. This hard work paid off as we saw CIS of Virginia and its affiliates improve student outcomes and serve more students than ever before. Communities In Schools of Virginia is committed to increasing its impact across the Commonwealth. We have managed to strategically expand without sacrificing the quality of our work. This work would not be possible without our talented state office staff, dedicated board members, and devoted partners. I am inspired and excited about what we have accomplished this past year and am optimistic about our future. Daniel A.
