1 MARK¹² Reading II (Adaptive Remediation) Scope & Sequence : Scope & Sequence documents describe what is covered in a course (the scope) and also the order in which topics are covered (the sequence). These documents list instructional objectives and skills to be mastered. K¹² Scope & Sequence documents for each course include: Course Overview Course Outline Number of Lessons and Scheduling Materials Course Overview Mastery.Acceleration.Remediation. K¹² The MARK¹² courses are for students in the third to fifth grades who are struggling readers. MARK¹² Reading II gives students who are reading two or more grades below grade level the opportunity to master missed concepts in a way that accelerates them through the remediation process by incorporating adaptivity and online assessments. Students work independently and with a Learning Coach to develop oral reading, comprehension, phonics, spelling, and fluency skills. They also practice grammar, usage, mechanics, and composition. The engaging course features new graphics, learning tools, and games; adaptive activities that help struggling students master concepts and skills before moving on; and more support for Learning Coaches to guide their students to success. Course Outline Unit 1: Short Vowels and Sight Words Students learn to identify and use short vowels and read sight words as they increase their reading vocabulary. They learn to identify elements of story grammar, setting, characters, problems, and solutions; to answer text-explicit and text-implicit questions; generate questions; and summarize and retell what has been read. They develop comprehension-monitoring strategies and learn to use graphic organizers. Short Vowels and Sight Words Review (parts 1-4) 1
2 Unit 2: Triple Consonant Blends and Sight Words Students learn to identify and use triple consonant blends and read sight words as they increase their reading vocabulary. They continue to practice identifying elements of story grammar, setting, and characters; and answer text-explicit and text-implicit They develop comprehension-monitoring strategies and learn to use graphic organizers. They also learn how to identify the number of syllables in a word and to use syllable types. Triple Consonant Blends and Sight Words Review Triple Consonant Blends and Open Syllables (parts 1, 2) Unit 3: Digraphs and Trigraphs and Syllables Students learn to identify and use digraphs, trigraphs, and open and closed syllables. They continue to practice identifying elements of story grammar, setting, and characters; and answer text-explicit and textimplicit Digraphs and Trigraphs and Open Syllables Digraphs and Trigraphs and Closed Syllables (parts 1, 2) Unit 4:-s and -es endings and Syllable Types Students learn to identify and use plural endings and continue their study of digraphs syllable types. They continue to practice identifying elements of story grammar, setting, and characters; and answer text-explicit and text-implicit -s and -es endings and Closed Syllables -sand -es endings and v-c-e Syllables (parts 1, 2) Unit 5: -ng and -nk endings and Syllable Types Students continue their study of blends and syllable types. They practice identifying elements of story grammar, setting, and characters; and answer text-explicit and text-implicit They continue in their study of syllable types. -ng and -nk endings and v-c-e Syllables -ngand -nk endings and Syllable Type Review -ng and -nk endings and Vowel Team Syllables Unit 6:/a/ and Syllable Types Students learn to identify and use long a spelling patterns. They practice identifying elements of story grammar, setting, characters, problems, and solutions; and answer text-explicit and text-implicit Homophones and Contractions (parts 1-3) Unit 25: /aw/ and Unusual Plural Endings Students learn about unusual plural spellings and continue their study of homophones, contractions, and silent consonant blends. They practice identifying elements of story grammar, setting, characters, problems, and solutions; and answer text-explicit and text-implicit /aw/ and Unusual Plural Endings (parts 1-3) Unit 26: /z/, Syllable Type Review, Suffix Review Students practice spelling patterns, syllable types, and unusual plural spellings. They review consonant and vowel suffixes and affixes. They practice identifying elements of story grammar, setting, characters, problems, and solutions; and answer text-explicit and text-implicit /z/ and Syllable Type Review /z/ and Suffix Review (parts 1, 2) Unit 27: MARK¹² Reading II Review Students review the course material and are assessed on their mastery of the objectives. Number of Lessons and Scheduling 120 minutes (60 minutes online, 30 minutes offline with learning coach, 30 minutes of language skills work) Total Lessons: 90 6
