2 WELCOME FROM BJU S PRESIDENT Welcome to BJU! We re privileged to have you as our guest for the 45th Annual High School Festival and Preaching Conference. As you participate in preaching, music, culinary, communication, art, photography or video production competitions, it is our hope that through these competitive events you will be challenged and encouraged to use the gifts God has given you for His glory. I invite you to visit university classes while you re here and see firsthand how God is working in the hearts and minds of our students through our highly qualified faculty. As you visit, we hope you will consider BJU for your college education. BJU is a unique educational institution. Our faculty provides students a worldclass regionally accredited Christian education that prepares them well for their ministry or vocation. Our graduates prove this every day as they serve the Lord in local churches, Christian schools, mission fields and many professions around the world. It s no coincidence our graduates are sought after 80 to 100 percent of our premed students far above the national average of 41 percent are accepted into medical school, approximately 90 percent of our accounting students have a job in their field or are accepted at a graduate school before they graduate, senior engineering students average a 89 percent pass rate on the national Fundamentals of Engineering exam, and our nursing students regularly outperform national and state pass rates on the NCLEX. On-campus participants are to be in the residence halls by 10:25 each evening. MUSIC CONTESTANTS All photocopied music is to be checked for copyright clearance at the Opening Meeting on Monday with Mr. Paul Jantz, Fine Arts 131. PRACTICE ROOMS Studios in the Fine Arts Center are available for all contestants. Additional studios are available in the following locations: Mary Gaston (women only), Johnson (men only). Please observe the sign-up lists outside the Fine Arts Center practice studios. Speech Classrooms on the second and third floor of the Fine Arts Center will be open for Speech Contest practice. Brass Ensembles, Choirs, Handbells, Harp/Classical Guitar, Large Vocal, Organ, Percussion Ensembles: Rehearsal and/or warm-up times have already been reserved. Please refer to the contest time schedules for these times and locations. MUSIC CONTEST WINNERS AND FINALISTS Names will be posted on the Fine Arts video monitors Tuesday at 8:15 p.m. and Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. as listed in the schedule. SPEECH CONTEST WINNERS AND FINALISTS Names will be posted Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. on the Fine Arts video monitors. On Wednesday, immediately following the Final Rounds in Acting and Solo Performance, the first place winners will be announced in the finals room, so that they can prepare to be in rehearsal on Wednesday afternoon. There is no final round in Oratory. FINAL AWARDS Trophies and plaques will be presented at the Honors Recital on Wednesday. ART, MUSIC, PREACHING AND SPEECH BALLOTS These may be picked up on Thursday immediately following the Sponsors Banquet and between 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. in the Welcome Center. SPONSORS You are invited to visit Fine Arts 20, 124, 308 or Alumni 309 anytime for refreshments and fellowship. All sponsors are invited to a special luncheon with Dr. Steve Pettit on Thursday at noon in the Davis Room of the Dining Common. Attendance is by ticket only. Tickets are free of charge but need to be picked up at the Welcome Center by noon on Wednesday. 3

4 WELCOME CENTER Visit the Welcome Center for any assistance you may need. You may also find out more information about Bob Jones University, schedule a campus tour, and set up appointments with Admission Counselors. GUEST WIFI (BJU-GUEST) Username: hsfest2017 Password: goforgold PARKING INFORMATION Cars, mini vans and regular size passenger vans may park in unmarked, unreserved spaces on campus. Busses and vehicles with trailers may park in the lot adjacent to the tennis courts. DIXON-MCKENZIE DINING COMMON Hours: 7 a.m. 7 p.m. The Kalmbach Room is BJU s main dining room and features an international grill station as well as pizza and comfort food stations. Tips for having a great dining experience The Dining Common is open with continuous dining hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Try to avoid peak times such as 11:40 a.m. and 1 p.m. Guests who have preregistered for meals may use their name badge to enter the Dining Common. Other guests may purchase their meal in the lobby of the Dining Common. Familiarize yourself with the layout of where all the food options are available. THE DEN The Den features a full-service Chick-fil-A, Papa John s, Brody s Deli, a F real milkshake machine, Cuppa Jones, and a P.O.D. convenience store. You may purchase food using cash or credit. Experience a cross-section of musicianship components including aural education, harmonic movement and chord construction. Instrumental Director Methods Dr. Michael Moore, BJU music education faculty Dr. Michael Moore will discuss key principles of successful programming and explore literature resources for the school band and orchestra director. Counterpoint Dr. Ed Dunbar, Head, BJU Division of Music. In Counterpoint, we study the works of great eighteenthcentury composers. Today, we will be listening to and analyzing two-part inventions of J. S. Bach with the ultimate goal of writing one! University trumpet Choir open Rehearsal Everyone loves Christmas music, and you can play along in a University trumpet choir rehearsal as they prepare for some upcoming caroling in the community. Trumpet choir is made up of music majors, music minors, and many different non-music majors including cinema production, engineering, biology, and business. FMA 4 Sargent Art 11 SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES 2-2:50 p.m. Intro to Music Literature Dr. Fred Coleman, BJU Church Music faculty. This course is a general survey of the history of music in Western Culture an overview of stylistic periods and the characteristics of selected genres, composers, and representative works in those periods. This particular class period will explore the Early Romantic Era ( ). Fine Arts :50 p.m. Opera Workshop Dr. Shellie Beeman, BJU Voice faculty The Opera Workshop class explores the ability of the individual to combine dynamic singing to expressive acting. During this period, visitors will have the opportunity of viewing firsthand the singer-actor at work in various, comic and tragic opera scenes. Stratton Hall 3-3:50 p.m. Music theory III Dr. Seth Custer, BJU Composition faculty. This class will look at the wonderful variety of harmonies that are available to us for use when arranging, composing or improvising traditional music. Fine Arts :50 p.m. Majesty Music Choral Reading session Join the student members of the ACDA in a choral reading session sponsored by Majesty Music! Guest conducted by Tara Solomon, this session will feature new choral arrangements for church and school choirs of all levels. The other harp may be used for warm up in Fine Arts 122. Fine Arts 103 will be available for those with personal harps. Tuning keys for each harp are strapped to the instrument for your use, and electronic tuners are available in Fine Arts 122B.
