2 OFFICERS Chair JOHN B. SMITH, Jr., MD Clinton, NC Dr. Smith serves as CCME Board chairman. He is a family practitioner active in pediatrics, adult medicine, and geriatrics. Educated at NC State University, UNC, and Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Dr. Smith joined Clinton Medical Clinic in He is a certified medical director of two local nursing homes and a hospital skilled care unit. Dr. Smith has served as president, Sampson County Medical Society; member, Sampson County Board of Health; and medical staff president, Sampson Regional Medical Center. He was named North Carolina Family of the Year in 2000 by the North Carolina Academy of Family s. VICE-chair CHARLES T. FROCK Raleigh, NC Mr. Frock served as chief executive officer of FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, where he was credited with propelling the Pinehurst-based health system to the forefront in regional health care delivery. The administration building on the campus of FirstHealth is named the Charles T. Frock Leadership Center. Prior to joining FirstHealth, Frock was chief operating officer of Mease Health Care in Dunedin, Florida. He received his bachelor s degree in industrial and systems engineering, with a minor in business administration, from the University of Florida. He went on to graduate school at Duke University, where he earned a master s degree in health administration. Mr. Frock served as past chairman of the North Carolina Hospital Association and the Moore County Chamber of Commerce. He currently serves as the chairman of the Community Care of North Carolina. TREASURER ROGER A. GADDY, MD Winnsboro, SC Dr. Gaddy has been a family practitioner in Winnsboro, SC, since He attended the University of South Carolina and MUSC and completed his residency at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, SC. Dr. Gaddy is an assistant clinical instructor in the Department of Family Practice at the USC School of Medicine. Dr. Gaddy is also the former president of the South Carolina Medical Association. In 2005, he was elected mayor of Winnsboro, SC, and continues in this position. 2

3 SECRETARY MARILYN J. SCHAFFNER, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, CGRN Charleston, SC Dr. Schaffner, recently retired, served as the administrator for clinical services and the chief nursing officer at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Medical Center where she was responsible for clinical departments including nursing, pharmacy, radiology, therapies, and laboratory. Dr. Schaffner received her diploma in nursing from St. John s School of Nursing and her bachelor s degree in nursing from the University of Illinois in Springfield, Ill. She received her master s degree in nursing from Duke University School of Nursing and completed her doctorate at MUSC School of Nursing in She is a clinical instructor of nursing at MUSC College of Nursing, where she is an invited lecturer. MEMBERS CHARLES DAVANT, III, MD Blowing Rock, NC Dr. Davant is Board certified in family practice and geriatric medicine. He was educated at Duke University and UNC and has been in private practice in Blowing Rock, NC, since Dr. Davant is an item writer for the family practice Boards. He is a member of the Editorial Board for Medical Economics magazine. He holds appointments as a community faculty member at Duke University, UNC, and Wake Forest University. PAUL D. DONAHUE Lexington, SC Mr. Donahue was appointed to the CCME Board of Directors in He received a degree in electronic engineering from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. For several years he was affiliated with MIT s psychology and physiology departments. He spent 35 years in various private industry managerial sales and marketing positions and in the distribution of high technology medical-electronic instrumentation for use in life science research projects at universities, pharmaceutical laboratories, hospitals, and various governmental agencies worldwide. Mr. Donahue served as past president of the Columbia chapter of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE). He currently serves as chapter webmaster and as historian of NARFE s SC State Federation Executive Board. 3

4 DANIEL T. LACKLAND, DrPH Charleston, SC Dr. Lackland is professor and director of graduate training and education in the Department of Biometry and Epidemiology and the Division of Cardiology at MUSC. Much of his research involves the population risk assessment of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and hypertension. Dr. Lackland received his doctorate degree in cardiovascular epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh. He serves on the AHA Stroke Council Leadership Committee, the Epidemiology and Prevention Council Leadership Committee, the High Blood Pressure Research Leadership Committee, and recently completed service on the AHA National Research Committee. Dr. Lackland was appointed to the NHLBI Global Risk Assessment Workgroup, and the High Blood Pressure Guidelines (JNC 8). He is the pastchairman of the South Carolina Stroke Task Force, Tri-State Stroke Network, and is the past president of the Carolinas-Georgia-Florida Chapter of the American Society of Hypertension. He is the recipient of the 2002 Excellence in Leadership award from the Consortium for Southeastern Hypertension Control. THELMA C. LENNON Raleigh, NC Ms. Lennon has long been active in community service in North Carolina. She served as AARP North Carolina state president and member of the Governor s Advisory Council on Aging. She also served as a counselor for the Senior Health Insurance Information Program of the NC Department of Insurance. Among her many awards, she was inducted into the Hall of Fame of NC Central University, and she received the Ethel Lucy Andrus Award from NC AARP in In 2007, she was recognized as a Health Care Hero by The Triangle Business Journal. In July 2007, Governor Mike Easley appointed Ms. Lennon to the North Carolina Medical Board. She served as one of CCME s original Ambassadors for Quality. She completed her education at NC Central University, Boston University, and Harvard University. She holds an EdM degree from Boston University in Guidance and Counseling. Prior to retirement, she served as an education administrator with the NC Board of Education. JOHN R. MANGUM, MD Sanford, NC Dr. Mangum has been a member of CCME s Board of Directors since 2005 and has previously served as CCME Board chairman. A family physician in private practice with Sanford Medical Group, a satellite of Pinehurst Medical Clinic, Dr. Mangum is actively involved with the North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) and served as its past president in He also served as NCMS secretary-treasurer for five years and was chair of the North Carolina American Medical Association (AMA) Delegation in Dr. Mangum received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed his residency in family medicine at the former Charlotte Memorial Hospital, which is now known as Carolinas Medical Center. 4

5 TIMOTHY J. SHANNON, MD Aiken, SC Dr. Shannon was educated at Loyola University of Chicago and at St. Louis University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Northwestern University of Chicago. He is Board certified in orthopedic surgery. Dr. Shannon has been in private practice in Aiken, SC, since Prior to that time, he was a staff orthopedic surgeon with the US Air Force and a gratis faculty member at Louisiana State University Shreveport and Shriner s Hospital for Crippled Children in Shreveport. Dr. Shannon is a past president of the South Carolina Orthopedic Association and is a member of the South Carolina Medical and Orthopedic Associations and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. STUART SMITH, FHFMA Durham, NC Mr. Smith is the associate vice-president of finance at Duke University Health System (DUHS) where he is responsible for monitoring and enhancing the revenue performance ($2.5B annual) of all components of DUHS. In this position he serves as divisional chief financial officer for a 200-provider primary care network and maintains a senior role in oversight and resolution of all regulatory compliance and legal matters at DUHS. Prior to joining DUHS, Mr. Smith was senior manager at Ernst and Young LLP, National Healthcare Consulting, in Atlanta, Georgia. He received his bachelor s degree in 1981 from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. He also attended graduate school at Duke University, where he earned a master s degree in health administration. Mr. Smith is a fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association. He currently serves as the treasurer of the Board of Trustees for the Triangle Day School in Durham, North Carolina. HONORARY DIRECTORS A. DEAN KESLER, Jr., MD Sanford, NC Dr. Kesler was in private practice in Sanford, NC from He then served was a contract physician working in the OB-GYN clinics at Womack Army Medical Center at Fort Bragg. He is Board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and received his education at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia and his MD degree at the Medical College of Virginia (now Virginia Commonwealth University) in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Kesler has served on the founding Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Sanford/Lee County, the Lee County Board of Health, chairman of the Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Council of Lee County, and Trustee of his church. 5
