Universal Tufts Login Name (UTLN) & Tufts.edu Upon submitting your enrollment documentation, the Office of Admissions ed all incoming students with your Universal Tufts Login Name (UTLN.) The UTLN is similar to a username which will provide you access to numerous online resources, including activating your Tufts.edu address, while enrolled at TUSDM. If you have not done so already, it is important that you activate your UTLN and Tufts.edu immediately. Instrument Costs During Orientation you will be issued $4,795 worth of instruments for use in the pre-clinical laboratory. During your first year of dental school, your account will also be charged for the rental and sterilization of dental clinical instruments. The university provides instruments through a central sterilization system for your use in the delivery of patient care during your third and fourth years of dental school. To avoid excessive instrument rental fees during your latter years of dental school, the Board of Trustees voted to divide the cost for the sterilization of dental clinical equipment over all four years you are enrolled at Tufts. You will also be charged a fee for instrument ownership during your second year of dental school, and at least $3,500 for the sterilization of dental clinical instruments for each of the following three years you are in the program. Please anticipate an inflationary adjustment in this charge each year and more details about these fees during Orientation. Academic Calendar For your planning purposes, the Academic Calendar is available below. You will find the essential dates of the TUSDM academic year. Please note many dates are TBN and are subject to change. Please contact the Office of Academic Affairs ( ) with any questions. 4 Greetings Class of D 21, Welcome to Tufts! My name is Dr. Christina Pastan and I am the Director of Mind-Body Wellness, a position that focuses on promoting student wellbeing. The field of dentistry is known to be stressful, and the stressors of the dental profession start in the first years of training. Over the past two years, I have created and taught a variety of classes and workshops designed to help and support our students navigate the demands of dental school and they have been extremely well received by our students. You may already be aware of a current and growing trend toward stress prevention and awareness, with media attention constantly surfacing on this topic. Dental student health and wellness are extremely important to us here at TUSDM and we are the first dental school to incorporate evidence-based mind/body practices and wellness topics into our curriculum. The ultimate goal for our students is to leave Tufts with an excellent comprehensive dental education and clinical skills, but equally important, it is our hope that you will also leave with personalized stress management skills and wellness strategies that will not only support you but impact you beyond your dental education, in your practices and personal lives. I am assigning the book, INTO THE MAGIC SHOP, by James Doty, M.D. as required reading for the Wellness Course you will be taking with me during your first three weeks of school. On the first few days or Orientation I will be meeting with your class in small groups and am excited to share more with you about our groundbreaking journey incorporating mind/body practices and wellness in dental education. I look forward to your arrival! Christina DiBona Pastan, DMD, D 91, DG 94 Assistant Clinical Professor of Endodontics and Director of Mind-Body Wellness Christina.Pastan@tufts.edu

6 Memo To: Members of the DMD Class of 2021 From: The Reverend Greg McGonigle, University Chaplain Date: July 14, 2017 RE: University Chaplaincy Dear New Dental Students, Welcome to Tufts. I would like to introduce you to the resources of the Tufts University Chaplaincy, which is a university-wide department charged with supporting religious, spiritual, ethical, and cultural life at Tufts. Our office is based on Tufts Medford/Somerville campus, but we are available to support spiritual communities and gatherings, to provide pastoral care, and to offer occasional programs on Tufts Boston campus. We can also help refer you to healthy religious and philosophical communities to explore in the Boston area. We wish you well in your studies, your clinical work, and your life at Tufts, and we hope you will consider being involved with our offerings and with spiritual life. Peace and light, The Reverend Greg McGonigle University Chaplain University Chaplaincy (Spiritual Life) The Tufts University Chaplaincy is a dynamic hub supporting religious, spiritual, ethical, and cultural life for all members of the Tufts community. We provide pastoral care, support religious and philosophical communities, educate about spiritual and ethical issues in society and the world, and promote multi-faith engagement. Reporting to the university president, the university chaplain leads the chaplaincy team, which currently includes chaplains serving the following communities: Africana, Buddhist, Catholic, Humanist, Jewish, Muslim, and Protestant. Together, they serve the whole Tufts family as well as their particular communities. The team also includes chaplain interns; music, program, and administrative staff; and student interns. The university chaplain serves individuals and communities beyond those served by the associate chaplains and residents, and the office supports tradition-specific and interfaith organizations, programming, and services university-wide. The University Chaplaincy is eager to work with students, faculty, and staff on Tufts Boston campus to expand opportunities for religious, spiritual, ethical, and interfaith life. Potential opportunities include:

7 campus religious and philosophical communities; opportunities for meditation, prayer, and holiday observances; educational programming about the intersections of spirituality, ethics, and health care; wellness, leadership, and community building opportunities; religious diversity and literacy programs; and community service and social justice initiatives. A sacred space for Tufts Boston campus is the Marjorie Hanna Cleveland Meditation Room, located on the Floating Hospital s 6 th floor.
