Cengage Learning, ISBN: Your textbook is available as a printed copy with an online access code, through the Nevada Wolf Shop, or electronically on WebAssign as described below. WebAssign: Log on to and log on using your course key which is: XXXXX The first time, you will need the access code that you received with the printed copy of the textbook, or a credit card to purchase the access that includes an online version of the textbook. You have the option of purchasing a Lifetime of Edition access or a Single Term access to WebAssign. It is highly recommended that you purchase a Lifetime of Edition access. The same book and software is used in Math 182, Calculus II, and can also be used if you need to repeat 181. Call the customer service for Web Assign at (800) if help is needed. A Scientific Calculator: You will need a scientific calculator for exams. You can get one for under $10. A common choice is the TI-30X II S. No graphing calculators, PDA s, phones, or any other electronic equipment is allowed on exams. You may use any online graphing utility to graph functions when doing your homework. Course Description from the UNR catalog: Fundamental concepts of analytic geometry and calculus; functions, graphs, limits, derivatives and integrals. 1

2 A course grade of C- or better in MATH 181 would allow students to enroll in MATH 182, Calculus II. Prerequisite: MATH 127R or MATH 128 with a C- or better or an ACT score of 28 or an SAT score of 630. This course satisfies the university core mathematics requirement, and meets the Core Objective CO2. Quantitative Reasoning. Brief description of learning objective: Students will be able to apply quantitative reasoning and mathematical analysis methodologies to understand and solve problems. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and terminology of limits through applications and examples; Compute the derivative of a function using the definition, rules of differentiation, slopes of tangent lines, and describe it as a rate of change in a number of natural and physical phenomena; Compute basic integrals using Riemann sums as well as the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Topics covered: Tangents and velocity Limit and continuity of a function Limits at infinity Derivative, rate of change Derivatives of polynomials, exponential, trigonometric and logarithmic functions Product and quotient rules Chain rule, implicit differentiation Exponential growth and decay Related rates, Linear approximations, Differentials The Mean Value Theorem L Hospital s rule Curve sketching, Optimization Antiderivatives Area and distance, Sigma notation Definite integral The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus Indefinite integral Substitution rule Required Work: 2

3 Online Homework (30% of your grade): Homework is online and available through WebAssign, with due dates as indicated. You have 3 tries on a typical homework problem. Start early and be sure to get 100% on all homework. Online Quizzes: (5% of your grade): Quizzes are online and also available through WebAssign with indicated due dates. A typical quiz problem allows only ONE attempt. You will not be able to begin a quiz until you have completed a substantial amount of homework for that week. Leave sufficient time to complete a quiz AFTER you complete homework due that week, Mid-term tests: (45% of your grade; 15% each): There will be three tests total, on Thursday, September 25 (in your recitation classroom at your recitation time), Wednesday, October 22 (in Lecture class) and Thursday (recitation class) November 20, 2014, respectively. Final Exam: (20% of your grade): The required comprehensive final exam is scheduled for December 15, 2014, 2:45 p.m. -4:45 p.m. in WRB You must bring a picture ID for all tests. Tests include multiple choice questions and require Scantron form 882-E. No Make-up Exams: Make-ups or early exams are not permitted. If you miss an exam because of a valid documented emergency, your final exam score may be used to replace the missing exam at the teacher s discretion. Grading: Grades will be based upon your performance on homework, quizzes, mid-term tests and final exam with percentage weights indicated in parentheses.
