5 Introduction Pre-Training Intel created the Intel Learning Series to address ongoing education technology needs around the world. The Intel Learning Series is a collection of hardware, software, and services designed specifically for education. Intel spearheads the research and design specs; the Intel Learning Series is brought to life by local technology companies who customize the products and services for their markets. This document will discuss the standard software stacks for Windows * XP including an introduction, how to use, and other useful information for LOEMs to understand the software stacks easily and quickly. Audience This training document is intended for Intel marketing, Intel GEO technical marketing engineers (TMEs), Intel local field application engineers (FAEs), Local OEM technical staff, and other NDA-covered company staff who will work with teachers and students on the installation, implementation, and operation of Intelpowered classmate PCs. 5

7 SMART Response Pre-Training From an administrator s perspective, SMART Notebook consists of two components: SMART Response (Teacher-side): An application that resides on the teachers' computer, and allow them to connect with students and start a quiz. SMART Response (Student-side): An application that resides on the students' computer, included in SMART Notebook SE, and allow students to connect with teachers and take a quiz. 7

13 Installation Teacher-side 1. Copy the installer package to the target machine, double click IntelClassroomTeacherSetup.exe 2. Click Next to move forward. 3. When you see the following window with Complete(Default) or Custom, please select Custom. Tips: Select Custom, then select which program feature you want to install. 13
14 Installation Teacher-side 4. If Custom is selected, click checkbox to add or remove installation item, then click Next to install the program to the default folder, or click Change to install it to a different folder. 14
15 Installation Teacher-side 5. Click checkbox to add or remove installation item. Tips: Do not select these gallery collections since it needs much time to download and install. If needed, users can use gallery button within application to online get/update gallery. 15
16 Installation Teacher-side 6. Click Install. If want to stop or cancel the installation, click Cancel. 7. Application begins to be installed. Note: If select to install Gallery, but without an Internet connection. Two Error Information windows will appear during installation. Click OK to continue. If select to install Gallery, and with an Internet connection, the installation needs a long time to complete. 8. After successful installation, click Finish. 16

27 Create a SMART Teacher File 1. Launch SMART Response a. From Start Menu Click start > All Programs > SMART Technologies > SMART Response > Teacher Tools b. From Tray Icon After SMART Response was installed and then PC was restarted, the SMART Response icon will appear in the notification area. Click the icon,and then select Click here to start a class. 27

30 Create a Class List 1. Click To work with class lists, assessments and reports, switch to Gradebook view to enter the Gradebook view 30

34 Create & Import Students List a) Create Students List 1. Click the Students tab. 2. Select Edit > Add, or click the Add button on the toolbar. 34
35 Create & Import Students List 3. Type a unique number of 1 to 15 digits in the Student ID box. 4. Type a student's name in the First name and Last name boxes. The student's address and Tags are optional. 5. Click Privacy: Off or Privacy: On at the top right corner to decide whether Student ID and Average are visible or not. Note: User always can edit or delete a student s name, ID number and address. 35
36 Create & Import Students List b) Import Students List from Microsoft Excel or CSV file Note 1: User can import students list from an.xls file or CSV file into Teacher Tools to create a class list. General format for XLS files: General format for CSV files: Note 2: Microsoft Excel 2007 (.xlsx) files aren t supported. 36
37 Create & Import Students List 1. Click the Import button at the top left corner of the window. You can also click Add students to your class below Next steps. 2. Select the class to which you want to import the Students list, and then click Next. 37

43 Create Quiz Paper 3. Click the Title Page button. 4. In the top text box, type a title for your assessment. Select the type of assessment you want to create, and then click Add. 43

45 Create Quiz Paper 6. Select Question Type, and then click Next. For Yes or No and True or False questions, select the correct answer or the Opinion option. For Number, fraction, or decimal questions, type the correct answer. For Multiple choice or Multiple answer questions, select the number of answers, type the answers into the text boxes, click Next, and then select the correct answers or the Opinion option. For Short answer questions, select the number of answers you want to allow, and then type the answers into the text boxes or select the Opinion option. 45

If you want to create more questions, click Insert Another, and then repeat steps 2 to 4. OR If this is your last question, click Finish. 10.Select File > Save (or Save As), or click the Save icon. 47

49 Import Questions 2. Select Response > Import Question From > Microsoft Word or XML file 3. If user wants to import MS word format, browse to and select the Word document, and then click Open. 49
50 Import Questions Format the questions in your Microsoft Word document like the ones in the samples below before you begin this procedure. In most cases, the import utility ignores headers and footers in the Word Document. 50
51 Start Class For Quiz (Teacher-side) Before starting a class session, you must decide which mode your system will operate on, Anonymous mode or Sign In mode. Note: Both modes are OK. If want to know the difference between them, please refer to Help file in SMART Response Teacher Tools with an Internet Connection. 1. Open Teacher Tools in Gradebook view 2. Select one class in the Gradebook area on the left. 3. Click Start Class. 51
52 Start Class For Quiz (Student-side) After Class Starts in Teacher Side, The name of the SMART Teacher file and class information will appear in the students SMART Notebook SE Quick Links tab, and Students can click the class name or click Connect Manually to connect to the teacher. (See Picture1) 1. If students click the class name, they should enter their own Student ID, then they can connect to the teacher s PC. (This is the recommended method.) 2. If students click Connect Manually, they should enter IP address, Port number and their own Student ID, then they can connect to the teacher s PC. 1 2 Note: If Connect Manually is used, Teacher should click Connect students manually first to get the IP address and Port number.(see Picture2) 52
53 Start Class For Quiz (Teacher-side) After all students have connected to the teacher, Teacher can click Locking Sign In to stop students in other class from signing in. Note: If students disconnect from your class when Sign In is locked, they re unable to sign in again until you select Unlock Sign In. 53
54 Start a Quiz 1. Launch Notebook. 2. Select File > Open 3. Select the SMART Notebook file containing your questions, and then click Open. 4. Click the Response tab. 54

57 Start a Quiz 7. Click Start this assessment now. The assessment appears in the students' SMART Notebook SE window. 57

62 See Test Results After the quiz was finished, Windows return to normal OS and students can see the test results and correct answers. 62
63 Stop Class (Teacher-side) Stop Class to disconnect all students 1. Open Teacher Tools in Gradebook view 2. Select a class in the Gradebook area, and then click Stop Class. All students disconnect from the class, and a message appears stating that All students are signed out. Students can also disconnect themselves from your class. 63

71 Generate Reports You can export students or class performance reports at any time after your assessments are completed. You can tailor the reports to include all classes or select classes. You can also create reports for individual student or for all students in the selected classes at one time. 71
72 Generate Reports a) To generate a Student Performance report 1. Open Teacher Tools in Gradebook view 2. In the Reports area, click Student Performance 3. In the Class drop-down list, select the class you want or all classes. 4. In the Student drop-down list, select the student you want or all students. 5. Define the Report Period if you want a report for a specific range of dates. 6. In the Include drop-down list, select Selected assessment types or All assessment types. 7. If you chose Selected assessment types, select the types you want a report on from the check list that appears. 8. Browse to a location where you want to save the report file, and then click Create. 72

82 Q & A Recommendation on Quiz Paper s Size For Quiz Paper, recommend that: (1) Do not use more than 50 questions in one quiz paper. (2) For each quiz paper, do not insert more than 25 pictures, and for each picture s size, suggest to use < 100KB. (3) If want to insert Flash content in quiz paper, do not use more than 40 questions, and do not insert more than 2 flashes, and for each flash, suggest to use < 2MB. 82
83 Q & A Tips on Quiz Paper Delivery from Teacher While teacher send out quiz paper to students during quiz. After students received quiz paper, sometimes (>50%) teacher will disconnect from all students, but will automatically reconnect to all students in about 5 10 minutes (based on network performance). Impact: Teacher will see a prompt box said You're no longer connected to any of your students..., and see all students status is disconnected. In students side, nothing happens, and even their status are connected. Workaround: No workaround Solution: While teacher disconnect to students, please do NOT close NOTEBOOK, students could continue doing quiz. 83
