2 AHC215-Writing Hardware Specifications Beginning August 21, 2014 Course Description Architectural Hardware Consultants (AHCs) are required to master the skills and techniques of writing professional construction specifications. Architects rely on professional consultants for technical expertise and expect them to be proficient in writing specifications. This course teaches you how to write clear, concise, correct, and complete hardware specifications using the Construction Specifications Institute s (CSI) MasterFormat as a guide. You will learn how to: Organize your specifications Use correct specification language Create hardware specification sets Write complete hardware specifications Coordinate work in other sections Address product substitutions Additional Reference Materials (provided by students): Manufacturers technical literature NFPA 80, Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives, 2007 edition NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, 2009 edition A117.1, Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities, 2003 edition CSI s Project Resource Manual (PRM)/Manual of Practice fifth edition Optional COR145 Principles of Specification Writing Student Manual Optional Assignments Each class session will conclude with an assignment. You will be responsible for submitting the assignments on or before the due dates. Using the information presented in this session, write the following specification section articles for Section and submit them to the instructor(s) for review and comment: 1.04 Supplier Qualifications (use the Indicative mood of writing)

Creating Spec Sets & Checklists Understanding the differences between spec sets and detailed hardware sets Review each door assembly on the drawings and discuss its intended function and usage Using checklists to facilitate hardware specification writing Assignment 2 Due Date: Thursday, September 11, 2014, 5:00 p.m. (Eastern) 1. Using your notes and the information provided during the review of the door assemblies, create one Spec Set for each of the door assemblies. Remember, your completed specification will be checked against your spec sets to determine the level of completeness in your specification. Your specification will be considered incomplete if the hardware you select for the spec sets does not provide the intended function for each door opening. 2. Create a Checklist of each hardware item you listed in your hardware sets. Group like items of hardware together (including options and related accessories) on your checklist; hinges, pivots, door bolts, mortise locks, etc.

Session 3 Date: Thursday, September 18, 2014 Prior to this meeting, download the file titled, AHC215 Spec Outline for 2.02 MATERIALS from the Session 3 folder in the Resources section of the course. Writing PART 2 PRODUCTS o 2.02 MATERIALS (Approximately the first half of this article.) o Base/primary and alternate/secondary products Assignment 3 Due Date: Thursday, September 25, 2014, 5:00 p.m. (Eastern) 1. Using your downloaded copy of the spec outline for 2.02, and your Spec Sets and Checklist that you created in Session 2, write the product specifications for 2.02 Materials for product categories beginning at 2.02, up to and including 2.02K.3. Door Trim, Push and Pull Bars. Write each of the hardware items needed for door openings illustrated on the class drawings. You are required to write a Proprietary specification, which might also include some portions of Descriptive and Reference Standard methods of specification writing, where appropriate, to complete your specification. Your specification is to be your work, in your own words. Remember to follow the COR145 Principles of Specification writing when authoring your specification. Be sure to include manufacturers model numbers, options, and accessories for your hardware items. work using the Assignment tool on the course menu.
6 Session 4 Date: Thursday, October 2, 2014 Prior to this meeting, access the file titled, AHC215 Spec Outline for 2.02 MATERIALS that you downloaded from the Session 3 folder in the Resources section of the course. Writing PART 2 PRODUCTS o 2.02 MATERIALS (The remaining portion of this article.) o Base/primary and alternate/secondary products Assignment 4 Due Date: Thursday, October 9, 2014, 5:00 p.m. (Eastern) 1. Using your downloaded copy of the spec outline for 2.02, and your Spec Sets and Checklist that you created in Session 2, write the product specifications for 2.02 Materials for product categories beginning at 2.02.L Protection Plates, through the end, 2.02.R Signage. Write each of the hardware items needed for door openings illustrated on the class drawings. You are required to write a Proprietary specification, which might also include some portions of Descriptive and Reference Standard methods of specification writing, where appropriate, to complete your specification. Your specification is to be your work, in your own words. Remember to follow the COR145 Principles of Specification writing when authoring your specification. Be sure to include manufacturers model numbers, options, and accessories for your hardware items. 2. Choose 3 product categories of hardware items (e.g., Wall Stops, Door Bottoms and Magnetic Locks.) Specify equivalent products from 3 different manufacturers for each product category. Within each category, be sure to include the model numbers for each. 10 Assembling Your Specification o Putting it all together o Reviewing Instructor Comments o Correcting your work Course Review Assignment 8 (Final) Due Date: Thursday, December 18, 2014, 5:00 p.m. (Eastern) There are two portions to the AHC215 Final Exam A and B: Part A of the AHC215 class exam consists of a list of 25 multiple choice questions and is intended to be open book. Once you begin the exam, the clock will continue to count down if you close your browser or turn off your computer. You are allotted 1 hour to complete the exam. To access the exam, go to Tests & Quizzes in the left-hand menu. Part B - Using the spec sets you created in Session 2, write a full 3-part hardware specification that encompasses all of the hardware items needed for each of the door openings shown on the class drawings. Review all of the comments you have received for your PART 1, 2, and 3 specification exercises. Combine the separate segments of your specification to create a complete 3-part specification in the PART 1, 2 and 3 order. Include the finalized version of your spec sets even though they will not be graded. Note: Your specifications are required to be submitted in MS-Word.doc/.docx format. Use the following settings: Font: Arial Font Size: 11pt. Line Spacing: 1.5 Tab Settings: Every.5 inch Header Information in the upper-right corner: Your Name, DHI Member Number, date, and page number
11 TUITION POLICIES The tuition policies below have been developed to encourage students to be certain that they will be able to participate in a class prior to registering for it. A $40.00 administration fee will be applied to cancellations received prior to the class start date. Registration fee refunds or transfers will not be issued for students who cancel or drop out of a course after the third online meeting of a course. Students dropping out of a course, prior to the third online course meeting, may request (in writing) a partial refund or transfer of two-thirds of the course registration fee. Registrations for classes that require successful completion of prerequisite courses will not be accepted until the prerequisite courses are completed. SUBMITTING CHALLENGE EXAMS AS PREREQUISITES Students submitting challenge exams as prerequisites for attending future classes are required to submit challenge exams no later than fifteen (15) days prior to the start date of the future class. Students who fail a challenge exam are strongly encouraged to register for a training course (online or face-to-face) rather than retaking a challenge exam. CLASS ATTENDANCE Students are responsible for taking corrective action should an online class date conflict with their schedule. We strongly urge students to separate themselves from other duties during class time and to set aside time for assignments. Therefore: Students who miss a class session will be required to listen to the audio recording (podcast) of the missed session before the next class. Should poor class attendance impact the student's final grade, it is fully the responsibility of the student. REQUIRED REFERENCE MATERIALS Students taking the AHC215 Course will need to obtain the required reference
