Everything the Foundation does is designed to benefit veterinary medicine, promote animal well-being, and enhance research, so that we will be even better prepared to deal with difficult problems of animal health today and in the future. AVMF concluded fiscal year 2007 with total assets in excess of $2.3 million and total contributions of $882,852. As the national foundation for veterinary medicine and animal health, the AVMF is uniquely positioned to forge the strength of thousands of veterinarians, millions of pet owners, animal scientists, veterinary medical researchers, and veterinary product suppliers. 3 Basic Animal Rescue Training [BART] The American Veterinary Medical Foundation is addressing one of the most critical issues in animal welfare to date, by awarding Basic Animal Rescue Training [BART] a grant of $50,000 to help fund its national expansion proposal. BART, a 501(c)(3) non-profit program endorsed by the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association, is providing firefighters and Emergency Medical Service personnel with the training and tools necessary to recover and resuscitate animals trapped in desperate situations. The life-saving creation of BART stemmed from a tragedy that could have been avoided if such a program had already been established. A Minnesota firefighter s own beloved pet dog, Bart, was trapped inside his burning home. Despite being pulled to safety, without proper medical care and equipment, the animal perished. To commemorate this unfortunate loss, BART promoters are determined to express the need to institute animal emergency training on a larger scale. For humans, firefighters have always been strong, skillful heroes fully prepared to save lives. They have continually risen to the challenge of each emergency situation they encounter. However, they must be prepared to deal with the demands associated with the rescue of non-human victims as well. With the support of the AVMF, and other vital donations, BART can continue to promote its cause and train emergency responders most efficiently. 4 Greensburg, Kansas: Pratt County Humane Society Pratt, Kansas On May 4, 2007, a category F5 tornado leveled the town of Greensburg, Kansas. Over 300 animals were displaced and in need of veterinary care. Pratt County Humane Society had room for 20 dogs and 20 cats, and was already at capacity. With the help of numerous organizations and volunteers, the animals were treated and housed until many of them were able to be reunited with their owners. The tornado claimed everything one resident of Greensburg had, including his wife. The cats that he and his wife shared their home and business with also vanished after the tornado struck. In a desperate search for the beloved cats that had meant so much to his wife, the man visited the Pratt County Humane Society. Stray felines were being rescued nightly from the devastated areas of Greensburg, and the man was able to find six of his wife s cats at the temporary shelter. It was an emotional reunion for both him and the cats. Medical care for these animal victims of disaster was made possible by the veterinary practitioners who volunteered their services to Pratt County Humane Society during this great time of need. The AVMF awarded them $2,000 for reimbursement of emergency animal care expenses. Natural Disaster Experiences With the help of numerous organizations and volunteers, the animals were treated and housed until many of them were able to be reunited with their owners. Southern California: Countryside Veterinary Valley Center, California An Act of Heroism A fire marshal from Humbolt County arrived at Rincon Reservation to assess the damages of the October 2007 firestorm. While rummaging through the debris of a destroyed home, she heard a faint meow in the distance. The meow grew louder and louder as she walked toward it. Under a charred car parked on the remains of what was once a driveway, was an abandoned six-week-old kitten. The marshal gently placed the kitten in her jacket pocket, hoping that the little creature would survive the hike back to camp. To her amazement, the kitten, appropriately named Ashley, was still breathing. She was taken to Countryside Veterinary that night and treated for extensive injuries. Her whiskers were burnt to a T and her paw pads were molded together. Thanks to the expert emergency care provided by the hospital staff, Ashley is now thriving and has a new home with a loving family. In addition to this special kitty, Countryside Veterinary staff also sheltered and cared for more than fifty other displaced cats, dogs, and birds during the fires. The AVMF awarded them $2,000 for boarding the homeless pets. AVMF Annual Report 2007 AVMF Annual Report 2007

5 Avian influenza has been a recent scare among animal and human health care professionals; in the four years between 2000 and 2004 there were 15 influenza outbreaks and 200 million birds affected AVMF Funds Animal Health Studies The AVMF has a long history of funding research to benefit animal health. In 2007, the AVMF gave awards to the American Association of Feline Practitioners and the Veterinary Cancer Society Foundation, once the AVMA Vaccine- Associated Feline Sarcoma Task Force completed their charge and there were funds remaining. Since the AVMF is now centered much more on disaster preparedness, response, and relief efforts to help animals and the people who care about them, the AVMF considered how research efforts could benefit animals as they relate to disasters. Zoonotic diseases, which are diseases that can be transmitted back and forth between animals and people, can lead to disastrous results. Avian influenza has been a recent scare among animal and human health care professionals; in the four years between 2000 and 2004 there were 15 influenza outbreaks and 200 million birds affected, while during the 40 preceding years there were only 18 outbreaks and 23 million birds affected (Dr. William Dundon, PhD of Italy; Keystone Symposium, Steamboat Springs, 2006). But while some health care professionals have advocated mass euthanasia of birds in hopes of reducing the spread of avian influenza to the human population, its effectiveness in addressing disease control has been called into question. Therefore, the AVMF chose to fund innovative research projects aimed at addressing the spread of influenza from animals to people. Since the Morris Animal Foundation s (MAF) review committee, which includes veterinarians, rigorously evaluates grant proposals for scientific validity and humanely conducted research, the AVMF felt a partnership with the MAF was warranted to benefit both animals and people. The AVMF selected two such studies to fund in In one, veterinarian and graduate student Justin D. Brown, mentored by Dr. David E. Stallknecht, PhD is studying whether aquatic environments allow avian influenza virus to persist, to possibly mutate and then lead to pandemic disease outbreaks. In another, veterinary immunologist Dr. Cynda Crawford is studying influenza virus leading to respiratory infections in dogs housed in shelters. This type of proactive research aims to prevent influenza pandemics without needing to euthanize animals. H5N1 AVMF Annual Report 2007 AVMF Annual Report 2007
