1 Art Seminar (.5 credit of Applied Arts or Elective) Mondays / 12:30pm - 2:00pm / Debbie Zuidema The art center provides local artists who teach a variety of art forms: such as ceramics, batik, graphic art, painting and charcoal. Priority is given to seniors who need applied art credit. Students need to come to class ready to fully participate with a positive attitude, and must have respect for the artist and the ideas presented. It is critical that your attendance be consistent in this class! A total of 12 students will be allowed to take the class. Basketball (.5 credit of PE or Elective) Tuesdays / 1:30pm 3:00pm WE PLAY BASKETBALL! This course is required to try out for the College Hill Basketball team. A total of 20 students will be allowed to take the class. Book Club (.50 of English, Applied Arts or Elective) Mondays / 10:30am 12:00pm This class will be co-taught with a professor from Western Oregon University. There will be several contemporary young adult novels for students to choose from. During the semester students will read three novels and participate in book club activities in small groups. The novels that students choose from are all nominated for the Oregon Reader s Choice Awards and students will vote for their favorite at the end of the semester. A total of 12 students will be allowed to take the class. Boys Council (.50 credit of Elective) Thursdays / 12:30pm - 1:45pm Instructor: Eric Wright / Jackson Street Vounteers This is a group that works in collaboration with community mentors where students will explore health decision making, interpersonal relationships and transitions to adulthood. A total of 10 students will be allowed to take the class. Construction Math (.5 credit of Math, Applied Arts or Elective) Fridays / 10:30am 12:00pm Construction Math was created to help bridge the gap in mathematics for students looking for career/college readiness after high school graduation. It is an Algebra 2 level course that is project based. Students will closely examine math concepts and then apply their learning to actual products. Through a generous community donation students will be applying their knowledge through the building of the projects studied in the lessons. There will be a strong emphasis on problem solving, critical thinking, technical writing and state level work samples. Attendance in this class critical! The lessons cannot be made up later and the concepts in the class build on the previous week s experiences. A total of 12 students will be allowed to take the class.
2 Digital Storytelling (.5 credit of Applied Arts, English or Elective) Wednesdays / 10:30am - 12:00pm Students will create a short film using WeVideo. This process will include generating ideas for topics, drafting and revising short original narratives along with giving and receiving constructive feedback. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the second annual College Hill Film Festival. A total of 6 students will be allowed to take the class. Engineering: Design & Modeling 1 (.5 credit of Applied Arts or Elective) Tuesdays or Thursdays / 10:30am 12:00pm This is a CAD (computer aided drawing) course that offers students an introduction to engineering and an opportunity to use their creative minds to design different projects. Students must have successfully completed Algebra 1 to enroll in this class. A total of 12 students will be allowed to take the class. Fused Glass (.5 credit of Applied Arts or Elective) Tuesdays / 1:30pm 3:00pm / Debbie Zuidema This type of art is a process where various sized pieces of colorful glass are arranged artistically and then kiln-fired so that the pieces melt/fuse together. Common projects accomplished in this class will be sun catchers, pendants, small bowls, small dishes, magnets and tiles. Priority is given to seniors who need applied art credit. Students need to come to class ready to fully participate with a positive attitude. It is critical that your attendance be consistent in this class! A total of 12 students will be allowed to take the class. Students with poor attendance and/or lack of participation will be dropped from the class Girls Council (.50 credit of Elective) Fridays / 12:30pm 1:45pm Instructor: Eric Wright / Jackson Street Volunteers This is a group that works in collaboration with community mentors where students will explore health decision making, interpersonal relationships and transitions to adulthood. A total of 10 students will be allowed to take the class. Horticulture (.5 credit of Science, Applied Arts or Elective) Tuesdays or Thursdays / 10:30am 12:00pm Take your learning experience beyond the four walls of a classroom! Come play in the dirt and grow plants for your home and garden! Horticulture class is the time to learn about gardening, landscaping, plant care, agricultural science and the benefits to our environment that good gardening can provide. Emphasis will be placed on proper use of tools, the importance of body mechanics, the benefits of greenhouse gardening, composting, worm farming, tree planting, raised bed gardening, proper soil composition, plants native to Oregon, chickens, bees and organic gardening. Projects for the class include: Propagating, seed germination, hydroponics, building raised beds, raising plants for profit, soil testing, building cold frames, creating and maintaining a drip irrigation system, vegetable harvesting, building chicken coops and cooking with fresh ingredients. Each student will be assigned their own raised bed to maintain. It is critical that your attendance be consistent in this class! Come join us and earn your gloves. A total of 12 students will be allowed to take the class.
3 Inside Out (.25 credit of Elective) Mondays / 10:30am 11:15am Instructor: Cathy Wright / Melinda Norman Inside Out is taught by our Trillium Counselor. The first half of the class explores the differences between our internal and external selves. The second half of the class covers the process of social learning. A total of 10 students will be allowed to take the class. Knitting (.25 credit of Applied Arts or Elective) Tuesdays / 9:30am 10:15am Instructor: Cathy Wright We knit and we chat and then we knit some more. No worries if you don t know how no prior experience necessary! A total of 10 students will be allowed to take the class. Mindfulness (.25 credit of Elective) Thursdays / 12:30am 1:15pm Instructor: Cathy Wright / Melinda Norman Mindfulness is the act of being fully in the present. This class will provide an excellent opportunity to teach self-control and the ability to focus as well as help to lower anxiety. In this class, each week we will focus on a different exercise that can be used to bring the student into the present. A total of 6 students will be allowed to take the class. Net Games (.25 credit of PE or Elective) Wednesdays / 12:30pm to 1:30pm / Donna Keim You will be introduced to the net games of volleyball, pickle ball, badminton, and tennis. You will become knowledgeable of the rules, skills and strategies and have the opportunity to practice the physical skills of each net game. Each game will have guest teachers to help with the class. A total of 12 students will be allowed to take this class. PE (.25 credit of PE or Elective) Mondays / 12:30pm 1:30pm The objective of this course is to provide students the opportunity to be active and competitive with their fellow College Hill students. Games include, but are not limited to, Kickball, Dodgeball, Handball, Basketball, T-Ball, and Soccer. A total of 18 students will be allowed to take the class. Soccer (.5 credit PE or Elective) Fridays / 10:30am 12:00pm WE PLAY SOCCER! This course is required to try out for the College Hill Soccer team. A total of 15 students will be allowed to take the class. Walking (.25 credit of PE or Elective) Thursdays / 9:30am 10:15am / Donna Keim
4 We walk and we chat and then we walk some more. This class is outdoors so students must plan accordingly! A total of 25 students will be allowed to take the class. Intervention Classes All intervention classes will be held at 8:30am. If you have not passed Writing and/or Reading and/or Math you will have an 8:30am start time. Once all state tests have been passed you may request a 9:30am start time. Critical Thinking (Elective credit only) Mondays & Thursdays OR Tuesdays & Fridays / 8:30am to 9:30am This class is for seniors and for juniors who have been specifically requested to join that haven t met the math essential skill for graduation. Critical Thinking is designed to help prepare you to be successful on the OAKS Math Work Sample Assessment. After much research, we have also found that this class can help improve your score on the Smarter Balanced Math Essential Skills test. As soon as you have passed both official math work samples with 4 s or higher, passed the math Work Keys assessment with 5 or higher, or passed the Smarter Balanced assessment you will have completed the course and will earn between elective credit for this class. WARNING: Critical Thinking is only helpful to you if your attendance is regular. Frequent absences will greatly decrease your chances of improving your math skills and meeting the math benchmark. Reading Workshop (Elective credit only) Wednesdays / 8:30am to 9:30am Reading Workshop is a course that prepares students to pass the state requirement for reading. The course uses a combination of STAR testing, Reading Workkeys, Work samples, and Read 180. This class is for seniors and for juniors who have been specifically requested to join. As soon as you have passed both official work samples with 4 s or higher, passed the Work Keys assessment with 5 or higher, or passed the Smarter Balanced assessment you will have completed the course and will earn between elective credit for this class. WARNING: Reading Workshop is only helpful to you if your attendance is regular. Frequent absences will greatly decrease your chances of improving your reading skills and meeting the reading benchmark. Writing Workshop (Elective credit only) Mondays & Thursdays OR Tuesdays & Fridays / 8:30am to 9:30am This intervention course is designed for seniors for juniors who have been specifically requested to join who have not yet met their writing benchmark. The beginning of the semester will include direct instruction on the three writing modes - expository, persuasive, and narrative - as well as familiarizing students with the state scoring guide and scoring process. In October, students will be able to start writing and submitting official work samples. Throughout the year, classes will feature mini-lessons on discrete writing skills, such as incorporating dialogue, sentence structure, and conventions. As
