If your child s name is on the list but he or she is no longer able to go, please let me know as soon as possible. Our final 7-12 band and choir concert of the year will be held in the high school cafetorium on May 16th at 7:00 pm. Students are expected to dress appropriately and meet in the band room at 6:30 pm to warm-up and tune. The 7-12 band and choir will present a varied concert of classical music, traditional folk music, and (the students favorite), pop music. This concert is a required event that is a BIG part of your student s grade. There have been some issues with attendance at this concert in the past, though last year s attendance was a huge improvement!!! Many things can not be helped (illness, funerals, etc.) and many things can. We have already discussed what are and are not acceptable excuses for missing a concert. Finally, 7-12 band students will perform at graduation at 2:00 pm on Sunday, May 21st. Students need to meet in the band room by 1:30 pm. JUNIOR HIGH BAND STUDENTS will be performing as well. Although we only play in the beginning, just like concerts, the polite thing to do is to stay for the whole event. Again, this is a large part of your students grade in band. Because it is on a Sunday, irreconcilable conflicts will be dealt with on a case by case basis and the advice of administration will be taken into account if needed to help guide grading decisions. As per the student handbook, the make-up will be a performance of the concert material in front of at least six people. Please let me know by May 5th, in writing or , why your child may not be able to go. Concert dress is expected, but I would suggest cooler clothes. In my experience, graduations get very warm! Here are the dates to keep in mind: -Elementary Track and Field: May 5th (make up on May 19th) -Adventerland: May 6th -4th through 6th Elementary Spring Concert: May 16th (during the school day 2:00 pm) (This is a correction from my last letter, which stated that the concert was on May 5th) Spring Concert: May 16th -Graduation: May 21st (required 7-12 band) Thank you so much for your support! Nathan Smith The Music Department has kept VERY busy between the Carnvail, visits from Central College, William Penn, and Iowa Central Community College, the annual Bluegrass honor bands, a college visit to Indian Hills Community College, and 6th-8th solo/ensemble. I am taking up a lot of this newsletter, so I'm going to keep my comments brief! Please enjoy the pictures in this newsletter and don't forget our Spring concert on May 16th! Page 4 May 2017

These programs help the students to get a better picture of how things work in the real world. They have also spent some time doing a checkbook simulation. Mary Kay Van Gorp of Community First Credit Union also stopped in and talked to the class about checking and savings accounts, beginning the process of getting a credit score, and a few other things. The Accounting class has begun working with special journals (Purchases Journal, Cash Payments Journal, Sales Journal, Cash Receipts Journal and General Journal) They are finding out that there is a lot more involved when you are working with a corporation as opposed to a proprietorship.
