8 THE ACADEMIC YEAR The academic year is divided into two intakes: March (March-July) August (August-December) PROGRAMME STRUCTURE The Bachelor degrees at UOW are based on a credit point structure. One year of full-time study for most degrees requires the completion of 48 credit points; 24 credit points in each of the two semesters (equivalent to 8 subjects). Individual subjects are allocated a credit point value. Most subjects have a value of six or eight credit points each. A common full-time course structure is the completion of eight subjects per year worth six credit points each. In this course guide, we have listed the core subjects for the degree and, where available, major and elective subjects. You should note that not all elective subjects are necessarily offered every semester at INTI. Students are able to graduate with a single major or, in some instances, with a double major in their area of interest. Students also have the option of selecting a major and minor combination in some degrees. Individual subjects shown in the course structure may have their own prerequisites that must be satisfied before you can enrol for that subject. The actual prerequisite may be another subject in the course, which means that you have to take subjects in a particular sequence. Failure to meet a prerequisite or obtain a pass grade in a particular subject, may prevent a student from completing the course within the minimum duration stated in this brochure. Subject descriptions, including prerequisite information, can be obtained from the advisers, respective Deans, or by clicking your course of interest on the UOW coursefinder (coursefinder.uow.edu.au). All students intending to complete a double major or major-minor combination must consult with the relevant Dean prior to enrolment to confirm availability of subjects. ASSESSMENT Assessment is based on a combination of participation in class work, practical exercises, presentations, written assignments and examinations. The weighting given to each assessment method varies between subjects: this information is shown in the online subject descriptions and will be provided to you at the beginning of each subject you take. 8 UNDERGRADUATE COURSE GUIDE

27 GRADUATE S PROFILE IT has always been my passion for learning as the world is revolving using IT based technology. I was lucky enough to be one of the pioneers to join this course as it was just introduced in INTI. The most memorable moment in this course was the Industry based projects which required us to do research and provide solutions for the challenges faced by leading companies. My advice to the juniors: Choose a course based on your capabilities and also passion. Acquiring a degree in a desired field is always better that completing a degree in a given field. Passion leads to an interest which will craft a stairway to success. JAGADHEESH RAJENDRAN Bachelor of Information Technology (Network Design & Management) my career. I chose UOW IT programme because of my interest in networking and security studies. UOW Program covers most of the areas of knowledge that I need for The challenges that I faced throughout my studies were the overwhelming coursework and my strong will to achieve distinctions in my subjects. These of course could be overcome by proper time management. INTI has good relationships with the Industry. Students get to do Employer Projects within the course, and attend talks, seminars and workshops by reputable industry partners. These experiences are really useful for my career. I would like to thank INTI for the quality education. CHEONG CHOON YIN Bachelor of Information Technology (Network Design & Management) I chose UOW IT course because of my interest in learning new technologies in the area of hardware, software and networking. Throughout my studies, I have faced many challenges especially when dealing with projects and assignments. However, I have also learned a lot especially in project management skills such as time management, especially when dealing with Employer projects. My advice to the juniors: Learn and absorb as much knowledge as you can from your lecturers. Don t feel shy to ask everything that you do not understand as it may help you in your future undertakings.
