16 Bachelor of Economics (Advanced) Bachelor of Economics SATAC CODE DURATION 3 years fulltime (or parttime equivalent) ATAR 95 CAMPUS North Terrace IB SCORE 35 ADELAIDE APPROVED 95 ADDITIONAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Year 12 applicants must obtain an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) of 95 or higher (or equivalent). ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE Knowledge of mathematics is helpful for finance, economics and commerce courses, and is essential for some courses adelaide.edu.au/degree-finder Search economics The Bachelor of Economics (Advanced) is a degree designed for high-achieving students who are seeking a uniquely structured, specialised economics degree with a strong emphasis on research and advanced economic analysis skills. This degree is for students who want to obtain a deep understanding of how economic and social outcomes depend on institutions, economic policy and endowments (such as resources and skills), and who intend to become a leader in business, policy or research. The degree features small-group work and special activities and events with distinguished visitors. Students will be given a personal mentor from the research staff of the School of Economics. This will allow them to interact with and learn from eminent researchers in the School, notable economists from abroad and high-ranking economists practising in the private and public sector. The degree also contains three courses unique to the B.Ec. (Advanced). These will help equip students with knowledge and research skills required for high-level jobs in the private or public sector as well as for further study in economics. (Note that there is the option for students in the conventional Bachelor of Economics degree to transfer into the Advanced degree if they achieve a sufficiently high Grade Point Average after one, two or three semesters.) Areas of specialisation Unlike the conventional Bachelor of Economics, students in the Advanced degree can also obtain a major in finance or politics and international studies. In addition, study plans for undertaking the Bachelor of Economics (Advanced) concurrently with other degrees (e.g., Law or Engineering) are available. If students do not wish to have a formal major in any of the areas above, they still have the flexibility to specialise in another area of economics, for example focusing on environmental economics. Students could also enhance that economics specialisation by taking courses with the same focus but from other disciplines (e.g. from environmental studies). Career readiness Completing the Bachelor of Economics (Advanced) is likely to enhance graduates career opportunities. Employers will note the program s high academic merit standards incorporated in this program (both the entrance requirements and the high GPA needed to remain in it), the advanced training in economic analysis and research and the outstanding performance of its past graduates. The Bachelor of Economics (Advanced) provides a springboard into leadership positions involving research, policy making and consultancy, and is an excellent pathway (via honours) to PhD study, which may facilitate a career in academia. Concurrent degrees There are options for students to enrol in concurrent degrees. For more information please contact a Faculty Student Adviser for their advice at: professions@ask.adelaide.edu.au SATAC CODE DURATION 3 years full-time ATAR CAMPUS North Terrace IB SCORE 24 ADELAIDE APPROVED 75 ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE Knowledge of mathematics is helpful for finance, economics and commerce courses and is essential for some courses adelaide.edu.au/degree-finder Search economics Economics puts the pieces together. It studies the interaction of the decision making of households, businesses and the whole of society. It examines how we respond to incentives (the things that influence decision making) and how our conflicting choices are reconciled. Economics contributes to our understanding of policy design and business strategy. Economics provides the big picture. The courses available within the Bachelor of Economics will allow students to understand just how the economy works, and will provide them with training that will help them shape its future. Students will study microeconomics (microeconomic issues include the management of the environment and depleting natural resources) and macroeconomics (this relates the growth and stability of the whole economic system), as well as econometrics (the maths and statistics of economics) and a range of other topics. Economists often describe economics as a way of thinking. Studying Economics at the University of Adelaide will develop students capacity to break down issues into questions that can be resolved, guide them in the collection of data and information, and introduce them to techniques for managing that data. These are skills critical to many careers, and very important to good decision-making in government and business. The program also stresses the value of working in teams and developing communication skills, both oral and written. Areas of specialisation The Bachelor of Economics degree gives students the flexibility to specialise in an area of economics, for example focussing on international economics or environmental economics. 14 Business

17 In addition, because only about half of the program is made up of compulsory courses, it is possible to enhance that economics specialisation by taking courses with the same focus but from other disciplines (e.g., from politics or environmental studies). Students can focus on something different such as philosophy or accounting. The Bachelor of Economics with a focus on accounting is accredited by the two major Australian professional accounting bodies: CPA Australia and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand CA. Career readiness This degree provides a great foundation for a wide range of careers. Recent graduates have been employed by trading and merchant banks, stockbrokers, insurance companies, accounting firms, financial planners, infrastructure and utility companies, manufacturers and distributors and a wide range of federal and state government organisations. Other employment opportunities include journalism, teaching, foreign affairs and international consulting. Completion of an honours degree opens up more options for specialist positions in economics, including in government and business Double degrees Economics can be studied successfully with other degrees to broaden the scope of students career paths: > > Bachelor of Arts with Bachelor of Economics > > Bachelor of Economics with Bachelor of Finance > > Bachelor of International Studies with Bachelor of Economics > > Bachelor of Teaching with Bachelor of Economics > > Bachelor of Economics with Bachelor of Laws. Concurrent degrees There is also the option to enrol in concurrent degrees. 20 Bachelor of Laws SATAC CODE , ATAR 95 CAMPUS North Terrace IB SCORE 35 DURATION Single degree undergraduate entry: 4 years full-time (or part-time equivalent) Single degree graduate entry: 3 years full-time (or part-time equivalent) Double degrees: 5 years full-time (or part-time equivalent) PREREQUISITES For Laws double degrees students must fulfil any subject prerequisite requirements for the other degree. adelaide.edu.au/degree-finder Search laws The Adelaide Law School offers a Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB) that can be completed as a single degree or as part of a double degree program. The compulsory requirements of the Law degree ensure a thorough grounding in common law principles and legal methodology while a wide choice of elective courses range from the commercial (e.g., Intellectual Property, and Taxation Law) to liberal and socially-oriented topics (such as Family Law and Legal Theory) and offer students a thorough understanding of international and comparative perspectives on the law. The Law degree provides graduates with a rigorous knowledge of the areas of substantive law necessary to undertake legal practice within a broad liberal education. Adelaide Law School offers semester 1 and semester 2 intake. Areas of specialisation A range of elective courses are offered each year and students may select courses from the following areas of specialisation: Comparative Law, Corporate/Taxation Law, Criminal Law, Environmental Law, Family Law, Intellectual Property, Labour and Industrial Relations Law, Human Rights and International Law. Career readiness Roles for law graduates are expanding significantly. Those who become lawyers may become involved in court work or may choose to practice as solicitors. Many graduates enter legal practise, but a significant number choose to pursue careers in industry, government, commerce, community organisations or academic institutions. It is the enormous range of options, and the opportunities and influence they afford, that gives a career in law its very distinctive appeal and makes the study of law one of the most popular choices among today s students. Professional accreditation The Bachelor of Laws is accredited by the Legal Practitioners Education and Admission Council in South Australia, and provides the academic foundation for admission to legal practice throughout Australia. To be admitted to legal practice in Australia, Law graduates must complete further practical legal training. Students intending to seek admission to practise are strongly advised to seek advice from the admitting authority in the relevant jurisdiction. In South Australia, the University of Adelaide and the Law Society of South Australia provides Practical Legal Training through their Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice course. Upon graduation from the Bachelor of Laws and completion of the Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice, students are eligible to be admitted to the Supreme Court of South Australia (with a restricted practising certificate). Once admitted, practitioners may apply for admission in any other Australian jurisdiction. For more information contact: Law Society of South Australia, 178 North Terrace, Adelaide, Phone: Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice Students have the option to be guaranteed a place in the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (GDLP) on completion of the Bachelor of Laws at the University of Adelaide. This new pathway is perfect for students who want to be able to practise law when they graduate. In order to be admitted as a barrister or solicitor in Australia an element of practical training must be undertaken in addition to a bachelor degree. The GDLP provides this practical legal training for Law graduates. Once admitted in South Australia, students can apply for a practising certificate in other states and territories without seeking further admission. The GDLP comprises a core of compulsory courses and a small choice of elective courses that allows students to specialise in a particular area of practice. Recognising the fact that students may want to work while studying, the program can be studied after-hours, online and during the day. Double degrees The Bachelor of Laws may be undertaken with a number of other degrees. Approved double degrees allow students to count designated law courses towards that degree, thereby reducing the time taken to complete both degrees. As an example, a Bachelor of Arts (three years) and Bachelor of Laws (four years) may be completed in five years if studied simultaneously. Graduates who complete a double degree are uniquely placed to pursue specialist career opportunities offered beyond the law. The full list of double degree combinations includes: > > Bachelor of Laws with Bachelor of Arts > > Bachelor of Laws with Bachelor of Commerce > > Bachelor of Laws with Bachelor of Computer Science > > Bachelor of Laws with Bachelor of Economics > > Bachelor of Laws with Bachelor of Economics (Advanced) > > Bachelor of Laws with Bachelor of Environmental Policy and Management > > Bachelor of Laws with Bachelor of Finance > > Bachelor of Laws with Bachelor of International Development > > Bachelor of Laws with Bachelor of International Studies > > Bachelor of Laws with Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences > > Bachelor of Laws with Bachelor of Media > > Bachelor of Laws with Bachelor of Health and Medical Sciences > > Bachelor of Laws with Bachelor of Science > > Bachelor of Laws with Bachelor of Social Sciences To ensure prerequisites are met for both degrees, please check Degree Finder at: Concurrent degrees As well as the option to enrol in a double degree there are also opportunities for students to study another degree concurrently.
