1 Edinburgh College Character... through Nurture, Learning and Service Term 4 October 18, 2017 The Challenge Hike Two days hiking and many mountaintop experiences later, the Year 9 students succeeded in their hiking challenge. The students were broken up into three levels to match individual hiking competencies. Each group experienced their own challenges - river crossings, dense bush, steep inclines, lost trails, sore muscles, interesting camp meals, scratches and rain. If the views weren't worth the sore legs then the feeling of triumph made it all worth it. Each evening worship explored Bible characters whose life challenges were what helped them draw closer to God. If the pictures aren't enough to inspire then the stories sure are! Congratulations to all the Year 9 s for surviving their most challenging hike yet. - Miss Sherar Brain Biology Year 6 had a fascinating Biology session with Miss Knight at the Secondary school. We learnt that water is important for brain function because if we don't drink enough, our brain will shrink. Your brain has more than 86 billion cells! We dissected and looked inside a sheep brain. It was gross but interesting because we could cut inside it and see all the different parts; we saw the left and right side of the brain and the brain stem, as well as tissue and fat. - Hamish and Alistair, Year 6 Myalla Artwork Winners Students were recently given the opportunity to enter an artwork competition for Myalla, the College magazine. On Monday, the winners were announced. Cover Artwork: Rachel E. (Year 10). Other highly commended artwork winners included Rebekah (Year 10), Alexander (Year 6), William (Year 5) and Sam (Year 4). Their artwork will be included in this year s Myalla. - Mr Howard (Secondary Art Teacher) SEQTA Training for Secondary Parents TONIGHT, October 18th 7:00pm in the Library Theatrette Please bring your own computers or ipads. Light refreshments will be served and a time of discussion and problem solving will be available afterwards.
2 December 11 to 14 Edinburgh College Staff & Family Support Needed Our Edinburgh College motto - Character through nurture, learning and service encourages our community to focus on the whole person and the many avenues in which we can all develop and grow. Service is a character trait that adds value to the family, the community and/or the individual. Whenever we choose to give freely to another we are blessed. In Acts 20:35 we find Paul reminding others that Jesus ethos was It is more blessed to give than to receive. What a challenge to parents in 2017 to teach our children this life philosophy. Road to Bethlehem is an opportunity for our local Seventh-day Adventist Church and Edinburgh College to offer a special service to our local community. Last year saw hundreds of volunteers commit to offering their time and talents to bless more than 14,000 people who visited RtB over four evenings. Building Community in a Post EC World Today the Class of 2017 was visited by Pastor Roy Kim, and former student Jamie Stanley, who are involved in liaising with and supporting university students in the Melbourne area. Not only did the gentlemen come with words of support and encouragement but also FREE pizza! Merit Winners Eight students were awarded a merit in the past fortnight for continuing to display respect, resilience, responsibility and willingness to learn. Congratulations to: Cooper Berry, Laura Bramham, Sam Buckley, Nathan Oliver, Sascha Taube, Asher Waite, Kynan Yates and Cordy Phillips. We had families provide support by being involved in set up, pack up, scene development, costumes, acting, performing, greeting and catering. The RtB Team is inviting our staff, students and parents to support this important venture by giving our time and expertise in the following: Set Up Sunday: 10th December 8:00am till finished (lunch provided) Pack Up Thursday night: 14th December 9:30pm till 11:30pm Pack Up Friday: 15th December 9:00am till finished (lunch provided) Mark your calendar with the above dates. Further information will be provided in the newsletter. Some of our merit winners were randomly selected to enjoy a delicious morning tea with our school captains and PB4L representative. THE EDINBURGH TATTOO THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 2 The College buses spreading the word in our local community. A concert to showcase Edinburgh College Secondary music students in three bands and ensembles. Please come and support our students and enjoy a variety of music from many genres. PRIMARY MULTI PURPOSE HALL I would like to encourage our Edinburgh College staff and families to commit to helping in some way with Road to Bethlehem Mr Borgas 7:00 8:30pm Gold Coin Donation Hot Drinks available at the close of the program. 4 Reflections From Year 11 Student s Recent Vanuatu Service Trip An experience that I never thought would have such an impact, is probably the only statement I have to sum up our trip. With long work days made bearable by the relentless affection of the locals and also some amazing cooking that was completely unexpected. I will never forget Vanuatu '17 and all its glory from earthquakes, amazing swimming places and the awe of Mt Ysur volcano. Thank you to the Edinburgh College community and especially my parents for sending me on such an amazing and unforgettable experience. In the wise words of the modern philosopher, Eminem "Life is too short, and I got no time to sit around and waste it". To anyone considering joining this trip in the future, just do it, sign up now as sometimes 'later' becomes never. - Harry Farthing The Vanuatu trip was an influential life-changing experience while working hard every day amongst exuberant Vanuatu locals. All the small children yearned to sit by your side and to get to know you better, it almost felt like you were a celebrity. All the people were content with what they had, even though it wasn't much, and this impacted us all. - Amy Ceisler Vanuatu was a trip like no other. What we learnt in Vanuatu, you can't teach in a classroom. If you're thinking about whether or not you should go on this trip, just do it! My only problem about this trip is that it isn't mandatory for all students to attend. Everybody should have this experience. - Lachlan Glenk Tanna was an amazing, life-changing experience. The local people's ability to accept us into their homes was heart-warming as they very quickly became a second family to us. I would highly recommend for everyone who gets the chance to take the opportunity to go. -Jeorgiah Hipwell Vanuatu was a really eye opening and challenging experience for me but I absolutely loved every second of it! The community and culture over there is incredible and so different to Australia. The second you get there the place just feels like home and you feel like you belong. We were blessed to experience what we were able to while we were there and we made some incredible memories. I would recommend this trip to everyone because you need to experience it yourselves as the things you learn cannot be taught or replicated here. If I was given the chance I would go back in a heartbeat. Definitely something I will never ever forget! - Megan Newell From my experience in Vanuatu, I learnt to appreciate what I have and was inspired to work hard to be able to support others. The volcano was definitely a highlight. We saw a shock wave caused by the gas released from the volcano travelling upwards of m/s creating an air disturbance. - Kwame Osei
